Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exact non-linear wave solutions are obtained for waves stationary in a uniformly moving frame for the case of a Maxwellian electron plasma in a uniform ion background. It is found that there are no waves below a minimum wave velocity; anharmonic waves develop above the critical velocity, but only up to a maximum amplitude, depending on the wave velocity; frequency amplitude relations indicate that small amplitude linearized theory is not a good approximation, except for large wave velocities; and in the limit of zero amplitude, twice the frequency of oscillation given by linearized theory for any wave velocity is obtained. Book excerpt: The linear oscillations in a hot plasma which is representable by the relativistic Vlasov equation with the self-consistent fields are investigated. The method which is used by Bernstein in the nonrelativistic case is generalized to obtain the formal solution of the linearized problem. Particular attention is given to the case when the unperturbed distribution function is of the Maxwell-Boltzmann-Juttner type (i.e., the relativistic equilibrium distribution) in which case the integrations involving the velocity space are carried out explicitly. The dispersion equation is derived and studied to some extent, considering the spatial dispersions explicitly in some special cases of interest. The ordinary and extraordinary modes, and the magnetohydrodynamic waves are investigated when the propagation vector is along the unperturbed magnetic field. The asymptotic expansions are developed corresponding to the dispersion relations of the cases considered, and they are shown to be in agreement with the results of previous studies in their respective order of approximations. It is found that circularly polarized transverse waves propagating along the unperturbed magnetic field are evanescent nu squared exceeds the quantity 1-phi squared divided by omega squared where nu is the index of refraction (kc/omega) and phi is the gyrofrequency. Book excerpt: Modern plasma physics, encompassing wave-particle interactions and collec tive phenomena characteristic of the collision-free nature of hot plasmas, was founded in 1946 when 1. D. Landau published his analysis of linear (small amplitude) waves in such plasmas. It was not until some ten to twenty years later, however, with impetus from the then rapidly developing controlled fusion field, that sufficient attention was devoted, in both theoretical and experimental research, to elucidate the importance and ramifications of Landau's original work. Since then, with advances in laboratory, fusion, space, and astrophysical plasma research, we have witnessed important devel opments toward the understanding of a variety of linear as well as nonlinear plasma phenomena, including plasma turbulence. Today, plasma physics stands as a well-developed discipline containing a unified body of powerful theoretical and experimental techniques and including a wide range of appli cations. As such, it is now frequently introduced in university physics and engineering curricula at the senior and first-year-graduate levels. A necessary prerequisite for all of modern plasma studies is the under standing oflinear waves in a temporally and spatially dispersive medium such as a plasma, including the kinetic (Landau) theory description of such waves. Teaching experience has usually shown that students (seniors and first-year graduates), when first exposed to the kinetic theory of plasma waves, have difficulties in dealing with the required sophistication in multidimensional complex variable (singular) integrals and transforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time now there has been an interest in the nop. linear interaction of electromagnetic waves in plasma [1,2]. But only in the last few years has the theory of nonlinear wave inter action effects undergone such vigorous development as to result in the formulation of clear phYSical concepts regarding the mech anisms of interaction. This development has been engendered by attempts to solve many of the plasma-physical problems accom panying the tremendous growth of experimental research [3]. The importance of nonlinear effects in modern plasma physics is dis cussed in detail in Chap. I. At this point we merely stress the fact that today the analysis of nonlinear effects is a practical ne cessity in any experiment involving plasma instabilities. We should also point out that plasma instabilities can assert them selves extensively in solids (solid state plasma) and play an im portant part in the study of cosmic plasma. Consequently, the problems of nonlinear wave interaction in plasma are of concern to those working in widely different areas of physics. Yet it is difficult to assimilate the results of investigations on nonlinear effects, owing to the complicated way in which the results of orig inal research are presented. In the present book the author hopes in some measure to fill the need for a text on the physics of non linear effects that is accessible to a fairly general audience.

Book excerpt: This updated edition of an Artech House classic contains steering, focusing, and spreading of antenna beams using the physics of refraction of electromagnetic waves through a plasma. Pulsing circuitry for ionizing plasma antennas with low power requirements are covered. New and improved smart plasma antenna and applications to wi-fi and the applications of plasma antennas are discussed. Experimental work on plasma antenna noise and new progress on ruggedization and custom-made plasma tubes are also presented. This unique resource provides readers with a solid understanding of the efficient design and prototype development of plasma antennas to meet the challenge of reducing the power required to ionize the gas at various plasma densities. Thorough coverage of the technical underpinnings of plasma antennas, as well as important discussions on current markets and applications are discussed. Additionally, the book presents experimental work in this cutting-edge area and reveals the latest developments in the field.
