Book excerpt: This dissertation contributes to the linearization techniques of high power amplifier using digital predistortion method. High power amplifier is one of the most nonlinear components in radio transmitters. Unfortunately, for most current types of power amplifiers, a good efficiency is obtained at the price of a poor linearity especially with modern communication waveforms. Baseband adaptive digital predistortion is a powerful technique to linearize the power amplifiers and allows to push the power amplifier operation point towards its high efficiency region. Linearization of power amplifiers using digital predistortion with low complexities is the focus of this dissertation. An algorithm is proposed to determine an optimal model structure of single-stage or multi-stage predistorter according to a trade-off between modeling accuracy and model complexity. Multi-stage cascaded digital predistortions are studied with different identification methods, which have advantages on complexity of model identification compared with single-stage structure. The linearization performances are validated by experimental implementations on test bench. In terms of experimental implementations, this dissertation studies the impact of different gain choices on linearized power amplifier. All studies are evaluated with a Doherty power amplifier.

Book excerpt: Improving the performance of the power amplifier is the most pressing problem facing designers of modern radio-frequency (RF) transceivers. Linearity and power efficiency of the transmit path are of utmost importance, and the power amplifier has proven to be the bottleneck for both. High linearity enables transmission at the highest data rates for a given channel bandwidth, and power efficiency prolongs battery lifetime in portable units and reduces heat dissipation in high-power transmitters. Cartesian feedback is a power amplifier linearization technique that acts to soften the tradeoff between power efficiency and linearity in power amplifiers. Despite its compelling, fundamental advantages, the technique has not enjoyed widespread acceptance because of certain implementation difficulties. Feedback Linearization of RF Power Amplifiers introduces new techniques for overcoming the challenges faced by the designer of a Cartesian feedback system. The theory of the new techniques are described and analyzed in detail. The book culminates with the results of the first known fully integrated Cartesian feedback power amplifier system, whose design was enabled by the techniques described. Feedback Linearization of RF Power Amplifiers is a valuable reference work for engineers in the telecommunications industry, industry researchers, academic researchers.

Book excerpt: Baseband digital predistortion (DPD) techniques for linearizing power amplifiers (PA) with memory effects are investigated in this thesis. Firstly, the relevant elements concerning PA linearization are introduced, such as PA nonlinearity behavior, its influence on the communication systems, its modeling and characterization... Then some existing linearization techniques are presented, such as power backoff, feedforward, feedback, linear amplification with nonlinear components and DPD. DPD is the most promising linearization technique. After that, the implementation architecture and identification algorithms of DPD are described. In this thesis, four DPD methods are proposed. The first method (MP/LUT DPD) is to combine a memory polynomial (MP) model and a simple non-interpolated LUT. Both the amplitude and phase of the predistorted signal are calculated by LUT. The second method is to add linear interpolation technique to MP/LUT DPD. The third method improves the second one by using a quadratic interpolation technique to MP/LUT DPD. The fourth method is to combine MP DPD and feed forward neural network. The principal innovation is that the training samples of the neural networks are the predistorded signal obtained by MP DPD. Finally, simulation results and experimental results are given and analyzed. The proposed methods provide different trade-off between the linearization performance, time efficiency and complexity.

These modulation techniques carry signal information in both magnitude and phase, thus they must be linearly amplified to avoid nonlinear signal distortion which is not correctable in a typical receiver. A second difficulty in utilizing these modulation formats is that nonlinear amplification generates out-of-band power (spectral regrowth). Therefore, to achieve both high energy efficiency and spectral efficiency, some forms of linearization must be used to compensate for the nonlinearity of power amplifiers. One powerful technique that is amenable to monolithic integration is digital signal predistortion. Most predistorters try to achieve the inverse nonlinear characteristic of High Power Amplifier(HPA). In this thesis a new multi-stage digital adaptive signal predistorter is presented. The scheme is developed from the direct iterative method with low memory requirement proposed by Cavers [1] in combination with the multi-stage predistortion proposed by Stonick [2]. To make the predistorter more compact a very simple and fast method called the complementary method is proposed. The complementary method has prominent advantages over other digital predistorters in terms of stability of the algorithm, complexity of the algorithm and computational load.

The nonlineariy creates out of band distortion beyond the signal bandwidth, which interferes with adjacent channels. It also causes distortions within the signal bandwidth, which decreases the bit error rate at the receiver. Digital predistortion is one of the most cost effective ways among all linearization techniques to compensate for these nonlinearities. In this thesis a novel technique for compensating memory effects and out of band distortions is proposed and is called Complex Gain Memory Predistortion (CGMP). The main advantage of the CGMP technique as compared to the memory polynomial technique is the ability of this technoque to compensate all the memory effects inside the PA. Two structures of the CGMP technique are proposed. The CGMP technique is examined using two approaches, simulation and experiment. Power amplifiers are modeled with memory polynomial technique to examine the effects of the memory that causes increment in Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio (ACLR). To implement this method, the complex divider is required. This complex divider is then designed and implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and combined with other parts to make the predistortion block. The CGMP is implemented in Virtex 5 FPGA and simulated using Xilinx blocks in Matlab. In the experimental approach the CGMP is examined with the actual power amplifier ZVE-8G from Mini Circuit. Finally the CGMP technique is compared with memory polynomial method and validated using a 1.9 GHz 60W LDMOS power amplifier that is designed in simulation and various signals such as 2-carrier WCDMA with 10 MHz carrier spacing and Mobile WiMAX with 10 MHZ bandwidth. The simulations results showed between 25 to 30 dB improvement in ACLR and almost 5 dB improvement as compared to the memory polynomial method. The experimental results also show around 10 dB reduction in ACLR with applying QPSK signal with 1 MHz bandwidth. The improvement of 7 percent in Power Added Efficiency (PAE) is also achieved.

Book excerpt: As critical elements of the physical infrastructure that enables ubiquitous wireless connectivity, radio frequency power amplifiers (RFPAs) are constantly pushed to the limits of linear but efficient operation. Digital predistortion, as a means of circumventing the limitations of this inherent linearity - efficiency trade-off, has been a subject of prolific research for well over a decade. However, to support the unrestrained growth of broadband mobile traffic, wireless networks are expected to rely increasingly on heterogeneously-sized small cells which necessitate new predistortion solutions operating at a fraction of the power consumed by digital predistortion approaches. This thesis pertains to an emerging area of research involving analog predistortion (APD) - a promising, low-power alternative to digital predistortion (DPD) for future wireless networks. Specifically, it proposes a mathematical function that can be used by the predistorter to linearize RFPAs. As a preliminary step, the challenges of transitioning from DPD to APD are identified and used to formulate the constraints that APD imposes on the predistorter function. Following an assessment of the mathematical functions commonly used for DPD, and an analysis of the physical mechanisms of RFPA distortion, a new candidate function is proposed. This function is both compatible with and feasible for an APD implementation, and offers competitive performance against more complex predistorter functions (that can only be implemented in DPD). The proposed predistorter function and its associated coefficient identification procedure are experimentally validated by using them to linearize an RFPA stimulated with single-band carrier aggregated signals of progressively wider bandwidths. The solution is then extended to the case of dual-band transmission, and subsequently validated on an RFPA as well. The proposed function is a cascade of a finite impulse response filter and an envelope memory polynomial and has the potential to deliver far better linearization results than what has been demonstrated to date in the APD literature.

Book excerpt: With the current demand for higher data-rate transmissions, complex envelop techniques like wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques are employed because of their high spectral efficiency. However these modulated schemes which feature non-constant envelop signals with high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) also impose strict linearity requirements on the PAs. A digital predistortion is used to linearize the PA for its robustness and easy implementation on an FPGA. The complexity of the DPD design is alleviated using widely spaced carriers and frequency selective technique.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a study of linearization techniques that have been applied to power amplifiers in the cellular communication industry. The objective of this work is to understand the limitations of power amplifiers, specifically the limitations introduced by the use of spectrally efficient modulation schemes. The digitization of communication systems has favored the use of new techniques and technologies capable of increasing the efficiency of costly power amplifiers. The work explores traditional and digital linearization systems; an algorithm based on the principles of natural recombination is proposed to directly address the limitations of previous embodiments. Previous techniques, although effective, have significant implementation costs that increase exponentially with the increasing signal bandwidths. The proposed software-hardware architecture significantly reduces implementation costs and the overall complexity of the design without sacrificing performance. To fulfill the requirements of this study, multiple systems are implemented through simulation and closed-loop hardware. Both simulation and hardware embodiments meet the expected performance metrics, providing validation of the proposed algorithm. The application of the algorithm to memory power amplifier linearization is a new approach to adaptive digital pre-distortion using narrowband feedback. The work will show performance improvements on an amplifier with memory effects suggesting that this technique can be employed as a lower-cost solution to meet requirements when compared to typical system implementations.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The need for linearity is one of the major concerns in the design of modern power amplifiers. Nonlinearities distort the signals being amplified, resulting in imperfect reproduction of the amplified signal; splattering into adjacent channels and causing interference in the detection process. In this thesis, a solution will be proposed and integrated to minimize and clean the imperfect signal as well as remove the unwanted adjacent sideband tones. Intermodulation effects of PA are identified as core cause of the degradation in linearization performance in a communication system. In general, there are two techniques considered to cancel intermodulation effects and improve linearization performances of RF Power Amplifiers. Firstly, is the Feed-forward technique, which allows the system to measure disturbance in a pre-defined way by using feedback and thus reacts to maintain the desired linearity of the system. Secondly, is the Predistortion technique; predistortion inversely models the PA's amplitude and phase characteristics, and when combined with the amplifier, produces an overall system thereby canceling the nonlinearity of the amplifier and reducing the amplifier's distortion. Although in real life cases there are also memory effects of the PA due to thermal effect and/or charge storage, in this thesis, we will only focus on linearization of a memoryless system using the predistortion approach. Design and implement this memoryless predistortion linearizer will involve two parts. One is the digital part which consist the designing and implementing of the predistortion algorithm using Altera design environment and Stratix II FPGA board. Another is the analog part which requires the constructing of an analog testbed and testing of the linearizer with IQ modulator and RF power amplifier. The project was developed for deployment of the entire testbed in the ECE723 educational lab in ECE department and was tested by student groups.

Book excerpt: Power amplifiers are essential components in wireless communication systems and are inherently nonlinear. This nonlinearity generates spectral regrowth beyond the signal bandwidth, which in turn interferes with adjacent channels. Wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems are particularly vulnerable to nonlinear distortions; this is due to their high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPRs), which require a stringent linearity. One way to achieve the required linearity is to back-off the input signal. However, in the case of high PAPR signals, the efficiency of the power amplifier will be very low. In this dissertation, we are concerned with achieving high linearity and high efficiency. We first propose a predistorter based on piecewise pre-equalizers, for use in multi-channel wideband applications. This predistortion linearizer consists of piecewise pre-equalizers, along with a lookup table (LUT) based digital predistorter; together they compensate for nonlinearities, as well as memory effects of power amplifiers. Taking advantage of the multiple finite impulse response (FIR) filters, the complexity is significantly reduced when compared to memory polynomial methods. Furthermore, experimental results obtained when two WCDMA carriers were applied verified that our proposed method provides improvements comparable to those seen using the memory polynomial approach. Secondly, a unique baseband derived radio frequency (RF) predistortion system is presented, which uses LUT coefficients extracted at baseband to directly RF envelope modulate a quadrature vector modulator. The primary advantage of this architecture is that it combines the narrowband benefit of envelope predistortion with the accuracy of baseband predistortion. Finally, a novel efficient crest factor reduction technique for wideband applications is described. The technique uses peak cancellation to reduce the PAPR of the input signal. Conventional iterative peak cancellation requires several iterations to converge to the targeted PAPR, since filtering causes peak re-growth. The proposed algorithm eliminates several iterations and subsequently saves hardware resources. A direct performance comparison between a digitally predistorted and a feed-forward linearized Doherty amplifier is provided, under various crest factor reduction levels.

Book excerpt: The power efficiency and linearity of radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) are critical in wireless communication systems. The main scope of PA designers is to build the RF PAs capable to maintain high efficiency and linearity figures simultaneously. However, these figures are inherently conflicted to each other and system-level solutions based on linearization techniques are required. Digital predistortion (DPD) linearization has become the most widely used solution to mitigate the efficiency versus linearity trade-off. The dimensionality of the DPD model depends on the complexity of the system. It increases significantly in high efficient amplification architectures when considering current wideband and spectrally efficient technologies. Overparametrization may lead to an ill-conditioned least squares (LS) estimation of the DPD coefficients, which is usually solved by employing regularization techniques. However, in order to both reduce the computational complexity and avoid ill-conditioning problems derived from overparametrization, several efforts have been dedicated to investigate dimensionality reduction techniques to reduce the order of the DPD model. This dissertation contributes to the dimensionality reduction of DPD linearizers for RF PAs with emphasis on the identification and adaptation subsystem. In particular, several dynamic model order reduction approaches based on feature extraction techniques are proposed. Thus, the minimum number of relevant DPD coefficients are dynamically selected and estimated in the DPD adaptation subsystem. The number of DPD coefficients is reduced, ensuring a well-conditioned LS estimation while demanding minimum hardware resources. The presented dynamic linearization approaches are evaluated and compared through experimental validation with an envelope tracking PA and a class-J PA The experimental results show similar linearization performance than the conventional LS solution but at lower computational cost.
