Download or read book Linda Perdido written by Mac Wellman and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Perdido, the story of the antisocial Linda Perdido told by her well-behaved sister Qua, is a memoir like no other. Set in a vast and unknown region in the Midwest, Mac Wellman’s Linda Perdido chronicles the lives of two sisters: Linda and Qua Perdido. Linda is bad, acting out every antisocial impulse she has and then some; Qua is good but comes to hate her sister, though she chooses to write a memoir about her, thus Linda Perdido. Their lives are complicated by many figures, among them the Traveler, a lonely man who follows the migration patterns of a strange bird, the Perdido Macaw; the Counter-Terrorist, who gets his facts wrong and cannot decipher the ominous chatter; a FedEx delivery man, Donn Morocco, who loses his mind after his truck is stolen by the rampaging Linda. These and others meet and complicate each other’s lives, often ruinously, culminating at what will become Ground Zero on the day before the attacks.

Book Synopsis Formulaic Language by : Roberta Corrigan
Download or read book Formulaic Language written by Roberta Corrigan and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of the two-volume collection of papers on formulaic language. The collection is among the first ones in the field. The book draws attention to the ritualized, repetitive side of language, which to some estimates make up over 50% of spoken and written text. While in the linguistic literature, the creative and innovative aspects of language have been amply highlighted, conventionalized, pre-fabricated, “off-the-shelf” expressions have been paid less attention – an imbalance that this book attempts to remedy. The first of the two volumes addresses the very concept of formulaic language and provides studies that explore the grammatical and semantic properties of formulae, their stylistic distribution within languages, and their evolution in the course of language history. Since most of the papers are readily accessible to readers with only basic familiarity with linguistics, besides being a resource in linguistic research, the book may be used in courses on discourse structure, pragmatics, semantics, language acquisition, and syntax, as well as being a resource in linguistic research.
Download or read book Carlos Monsiv‡is written by Linda Egan and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of MexicoÕs foremost social and political chroniclers and its most celebrated cultural critic, Carlos Monsiv‡is has read the pulse of his country over the past half century. The author of five collections of literary journalism pieces called cr—nicas, he is perhaps best known for his analytic and often satirical descriptions of Mexico CityÕs popular culture. This comprehensive study of Monsiv‡isÕs cr—nicas is the first book to offer an analysis of these works and to place Monsiv‡isÕs work within a theoretical framework that recognizes the importance of his vision of Mexican culture. Linda Egan examines his ideology in relation to theoretical postures in Latin America, the United States, and Europe to cast Monsiv‡is as both a heterodox pioneer and a mainstream spokesman. She then explores the poetics of the contemporary chronicle in Mexico, reviewing the genreÕs history and its relation to other narrative forms. Finally, she focuses on the canonical status of Monsiv‡isÕs work, devoting a chapter to each of his five principal collections. Egan argues that the five books that are the focus of her study tell a story of ever-renewing suspense: we cannot know Òthe endÓ until Monsiv‡is is through constructing his literary project. Despite this, she observes, his work between 1970 and 1995 documents important discoveries in his search for causes, effects, and deconstructions of historical obstacles to MexicoÕs passage into modernity. While anthropologists and historians continue to introduce new paradigms for the study of MexicoÕs cultural space, EganÕs book provides a reflexive twist by examining the work of one of the thinkers who first inspired such a critical movement. More than an appraisal of Monsiv‡is, it offers a valuable discussion of theoretical issues surrounding the study of the chronicle as it is currently practiced in Mexico. It balances theory and criticism to lend new insight into the ties between Mexican society, social conscience, and literature.
Book Synopsis Linda's Weapons and Battles by : Celina Habib
Download or read book Linda's Weapons and Battles written by Celina Habib and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda first shared her biography the year her granddaughter was born. This new life made her reflect about the battles she had fought and the weapons she had used. Were they the proper ones? A result of culture? Was anyone hurt? While pondering, she also wanted to inspire other women sharing her adventures. A simple shack in the outback of Brazil was her birthplace. Linda grew up as a happy and hyperactive child and started working when she was seven years old to help the family’s survival. However, with ten children who survived, the family was forced to give some of the girls away to other homes as young maids. Linda was sent to a city when she was 13, spending her adolescence submitted to juvenile work exploitation and punishments that could have ruined her self-esteem if it were not for her resilience and dreams which she kept secret. Since then, she used her weapons to win the battles she had to face with the power of her feminine energy. Her adventures included a dangerous immigration to Australia and the pursuit of a challenging career in which she succeeds, becomes the famous “Brazilian Bombshell”, helps her family financially and can find the love of her life with a beautiful family.
