Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln-Douglas Debate American history, reveals human nature deal= ing with momentous problems, and illuminates the methods by which the great art of public speech is used to influence public conduct in a great epoch. Because Lincoln and Douglas, in the course of the debate, each made references to their past records, it is necessary to have in mind the brief sketch, here given, of the life history of each. And because the debate was on the questions of slavery, and referred so frequently to the history of that question, it is necessary to here give first a very brief review of at least those facts, in the history of slavery, to which the speakers refer. The speakers inferred that their hearers had fresh in memory the recent history of slavery agitation and legislation, and, accordingly, we here offer a narration of such facts as are necessary to understand the mean ing of the debate, before giving the debate it self. Therefore, this volume presents, first, a brief sketch of each debater, just sufficient to under stand the references in the debate; second, just enough of the history of the slavery question to comprehend the allusions of the speakers; third, the circumstances attending the debate along with the chief arguments and replies of each speaker; fourth, the major and important portions of the speeches of Lincoln and of Doug las are given in the exact words of the speaker. Opening and closing of the debate, and when he arose to speak he refer red to the questions Mr. Douglas had propounded to him at Ottawa, and that it had been sent broadcast that he dare not answer them, but he said he wanted it distinctly understood that he dare answer them, and, in order that they might have him on the rec ord, he had written out the questions and his answers to them. Then he proceeded to read very slowly and distinctly, emphasizing his answers with much feeling and power. When he was through with them he turned to Mr. Douglas and said to him that he had answered his questions in fairness and candor, and said: Now Judge, I have seven questions that I want you to answer with the same frankness that I have answered yours, and he proceeded to read from a written manuscript he held, the seven questions he wanted Judge Douglas to answer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln and Douglas Debates: An Address Before the Chicago Historical Society, February 17, 1914 In the following year the Missouri question came up afresh and Senator Thomas of Illinois proposed, as a compromise, that Missouri Should be admitted to the Union with Slavery, but that in all the remaining territory north of 3o°3o' north latitude slavery should be forever prohibited. This amendment was adopted and the bill was passed. The Missouri Compromise was generally considered a victory for the South, but Thomas Jefferson considered it the death knell of the Union. He was still living, at the age of seventy-seven. He saw what this sectional rift portended, and he wrote to John Holmes, one of his correspondents, under date of April 22, 1820: This momentous question, like a fire bell in the night, awakened me and filled me with terror. I Considered it at once as the knell of the Union. It is hushed, indeed, for the moment. But this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence. A geographical line, coinciding with a marked principle, moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deeper. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, David Mearns at the Library of Congress wrote a twenty-page overview of the basic process that led to the publication of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Here, for the first time in a detailed and readable account focusing on Lincoln's personal involvement, Dave Leroy writes the full story with original correspondence, contemporary newspaper accounts, and photos and illustrations of the day to carry the reader from the dejected debater of 1858 to the surprise president of 1860 who rode a political bestseller to the White House. In 1954, Illinois historian Harry Pratt located and described eighteen inscribed copies of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. In this new work, 42 signed volumes are identified.Perhaps the last remaining Lincoln mystery is also explained at length: did Lincoln make one or two paste-up scrapbooks of the original newspaper texts of his and Douglas' verbatim debate remarks? If only one existed, why did a New York newspaper account hint at another in December, 1860? If there were two, what became of the second? Like a lawyer before a jury, Leroy marshals the facts to let the reader decide. Ultimately, Mr. Lincoln's Book asks the reader to resolve the century and a half old debate: was Lincoln an author? Some argue that he wasn't, but Leroy leads us to conclude that Lincoln, in more ways than not, was author of the book publishing the debates. It is a rare day when something novel is published about Abraham Lincoln's life and work. Yet 20,000 volumes later, Mr. Lincoln's Book is an unknown study, well researched and compellingly told. The printed volume is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing a complete copy of Lincoln's scrapbook of the debates, copies and transcriptions of Lincoln's correspondence, and some related political cartoons and photographs.

Book excerpt: This definitive analysis of the Lincoln-Douglas debates is “one of the most influential works of American history and political philosophy ever published (National Review). In Crisis of the House Divided, noted conservative scholar and historian Harry V. Jaffa illuminates the political principles that guided Abraham Lincoln from his reentry into politics in 1854 through his Senate campaign against Stephen Douglas in 1858. Through critical analysis of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Jaffa demonstrates that Lincoln’s political career was grounded in his commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law, and abolition. A landmark work of American history, it “has shaped the thought of a generation of Abraham Lincoln and Civil War scholars." To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the original publication, Jaffa has provided a new introduction (Civil War History). "A searching and provocative analysis of the issues confronted and the ideas expounded in the great debates…A book which displays such learning and insight that it cannot fail to excite the admiration even of scholars who disagree with its major arguments and conclusions."—D. E. Fehrenbacher, American Historical Review

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign in Illinois: Last Joint Debate; Douglas and Lincoln at Alton, Illinois Long and loud bursts of applause greeted Senator Douglas when he appeared on the stand. As he was about to commence speaking, he was interrupted by Dr. Hope, one of the Danite faction. Dr. Hope. - Judge, before you commence speaking, allow me to ask you a question. Senator Douglas. - If you will not occupy too much of my time. Dr. Hope. - Only an instant. Senator Douglas. - What is your question? Dr. Hope. - Do you believe that the Territorial legislatures ought to pass laws to protect slavery in the territories? Senator Douglas. - You will get an answer in the course of my remarks. [Applause.] Ladies and Gentlemen: It is now nearly four months since the canvass between Mr. Lincoln and myself commenced. On the 16th of June the Republican Convention assembled at Springfield and nominated Mr. Lincoln as their candidate for the U. S. Senate, and he on that occasion delivered a speech in which he laid down what he understood to be the Republican creed and the platform on which he proposed to stand during the contest. The principal points in that speech of Mr. Lincoln's were: First, that this government could not endure permanently divided into free and slave States, as our fathers made it; that they must all become free or all become slave; all become one thing or all become the other, otherwise this Union could not continue to exist. I give you his opinions almost in the identical language he used. His second proposition was a crusude against the Supreme Court of the United States because of the Dred Scott decision; urging as an especial reason for his opposition to that decision that it deprived the negroes of the rights and benefits of that clause in the Constitution of the United States which guarantees to the citizens of each State, all the rights, privileges, and immunities of the citizens of the several States. On the 10th of July I returned home, and delivered a speech to the people of Chicago, in which I announced it to be my purpose to appeal to the people of Illinois to sustain the course I had pursued in. Congress. In that speech I joined issue with Mr. Lincoln on the points which he had presented. Thus there was an issue, clear and distinct, made up between us on these two propositions laid down in the speech of Mr. Lincoln at Springfield and controverted by me in my reply to him at Chicago. On the next day, the 11th of July, Mr. Lincoln replied to me at Chicago, explaining at some length, and re-affirming the positions which he had taken in his Springfield speech. In that Chicago speech he even went further than he had before, and uttered sentiments in regard to the negro being on an equality with the white man. [That's so.] He adopted in support this position the argument which Love-joy and Codding, and other Abolition lecturers had made familiar in the northern and central portions of the State, to wit: that the Declaration of Independence having declared all men free and equal, by Divine law, that negro equality was an inalienable right, of which they could not be deprived. He insisted, in that speech, that the Declaration of Independence included the negro in the clause asserting that all men were created equal, and went so far as to say that if one man was allowed to take the position, that it did not include the negro, others might take the position that it did not include other men.
