Book excerpt: "When, thirty-five years ago, the Lincoln Centennial Association of Springfield, Illinois changed its character from a local organization celebrating Lincoln's birthday with an annual banquet to a research organization, the first project undertaken was an attempt to discover where Lincoln was and what he did every day of his life. In 1926 the pioneering result, a slim pamphlet, now a collector's item, Lincoln in the Year 1858, was published. Six others appeared at regular intervals (1859 and 1860 in 1927, 1854 in 1928, 1855 in 1929, 1856 and 1857 in 1930) ... The seven pamphlets, revised, were brought together in 1933 in Lincoln 1854-1861, Being the Day-by-Day Activities of Abraham Lincoln from January 1, 1854 to March 4, 1861, by Paul M. Angle, executive secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association. The following eight years carried the chronology back to Lincoln's birth with three more volumes -- Lincoln 1847-1853 by Benjamin P. Thomas, 1936; and Lincoln 1840-1846 and Lincoln 1809-1839 by Harry E. Pratt, 1939 and 1941 -- and the series became known as one of the most useful reference works in the entire range of Lincoln scholarship. Lincoln's daily activities were chronicled by using every authentic source. In the resulting mountain of material, three sources proved most fruitful: Lincoln's writings; newspapers; and Illinois court records. The opening of the Robert Todd Lincoln Papers in July, 1947, provided much new material, and The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, in nine volumes, appearing in 1953, almost doubled the number of known compositions from Lincoln's pen. Revising and reprinting the chronology was a project often discussed by Abraham Lincoln Association officials, but never accomplished, as the undertaking would be large and expensive, particularly if carried through Lincoln's years as President. The Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission, after considering other possibilities, recognized the revision and enlargement of Lincoln Day-by-Day as a research tool indispensable to future generations of students. It is singularly appropriate that an idea conceived by an organization formed to celebrate Lincoln's Centennial should be completed by an agency created by Congress to celebrate Lincoln's Sesquicentennial. The Abraham Lincoln Association generously transferred its copyright to the Commission"--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln in the Legislature Dr. Pratt's interest in Lincoln received its impetus while attending the Uni versity of Illinois. His thesis for the doctorate was in this field. Later he served as Dean of Blackburn College and. As Professor of History at Illinois Wesleyan University. As Executive Secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association at Springfield, and as editor of its Abraham Lincoln Quarterly, ' he enlarged upon his productive scholarship. Now revealed for posterity are many facts about Lincoln's life hitherto buried in musty records, which awaited the assiduity and skill of one of his special attainments to bring them to public knowledge. For one thing, Dr. Pratt has made easily accessible to us the known record of Lincoln's day-by-day life from the time of his birth through 1846. In two volumes, Lincoln: 1809-1839 and Lincoln: 1840-1846 are to be found his chronicles of Lincoln's known daily activities during that formative period. Two other works, one by Benjamin P. Thomas, carrying the chronology from 1846 to 1853, the other by Paul M. Angle, covering the period 1854 - 1861, complete the series. Dr. Pratt is also the author of The Personal Finances of Abraham Lincoln. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In the predawn darkness of Friday, February 1, 1861, aboard a westbound train, Abraham Lincoln, left Coles County for the last time. Elected to the presidency the previous November and not yet having departed his home in Springfield for Washington, D.C., to be inaugurated, he had come on January 30 to visit his stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, and to say farewell to friends and family in Charleston and the surrounding area. He would never return. Having led the United States through the Civil War, he would die at the hand of assassin John Wilkes Booth in Washington’s Ford Theater on another Friday—April 14, 1865. This book by history scholar Charles H. Coleman explores Lincoln’s close-knit family ties in and connection to Coles County, located in east-central Illinois: the home of his father and stepmother, Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, as well as his stepbrother John and his stepsisters, Sarah Elizabeth and Matilda, along with their families, and where Lincoln himself was a frequent visitor during his lifetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers the best previously unpublished and uncollected writings on Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln scholarship by one of his great biographers, Benjamin P. Thomas. A skilled historian and a masterful storyteller himself, Thomas was widely regarded as the greatest Lincoln historian of his generation. With these essays, he combines historical depth with narrative grace in delineating Lincoln's qualities as a humorist, lawyer, and politician. From colorful tall tales to clever barbs aimed at political opponents, Lincoln clothed a shrewd wit in a homespun, backwoods vernacular. He used humor to defuse tension, illuminate a point, put others at ease--and sometimes for sheer fun. From an early reliance on broad humor and ridicule in speeches and on the stump, Lincoln's style shifted in 1854 to a more serious vein in which humor came primarily to elucidate an argument. "If I did not laugh occasionally I should die," he is said to have told his cabinet, "and you need this medicine as much as I do." Thomas brings his deep knowledge of Lincoln to essays on the great man's tumultuous career in Congress, his work as a lawyer, his experiences in the Courts, and his opinions of the South. A gracious survey of Lincoln's early biographers, particularly Ida Tarbell, stands alongside an appreciation of Harry Edward Pratt, a key figure in the early days of the Abraham Lincoln Association. Thomas also assesses Lincoln's use of language and the ongoing significance of the Gettysburg Address. This diverse collection is enhanced by an introduction by Michael Burlingame, himself a leading biographer of Lincoln. Burlingame provides a balanced portrait of Thomas and his circuitous path toward writing history.
