Book Synopsis The Ocimum Genome by : Ajit Kumar Shasany
Download or read book The Ocimum Genome written by Ajit Kumar Shasany and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the Ocimum genus from its genetic diversity to genome sequences, metabolites and their therapeutic utilities. Tulasi, Ocimum tenuiflorum, as a member of the family Lamiaceae, is a sacred plant in India. The plants of this genus Ocimum are collectively referred to as Basil and holy basil is worshipped in the Hindu religion. Basils are reservoirs of diverse terpenoids, phenylpropanoids and flavonoids, in addition to commercially important aromatic essential oils. In 2016, two working groups in India published the genome sequence in two different genotypes of Ocimum tenuiflorum. To help the readers understand the complexities of the genus and different chemotypes, this book accumulates all the available information on this medicinal plant including the genome. The complete knowledge may enable researchers to generate specific chemotypes in basil either through conventional breeding or development of transgenic lines. It also makes it possible to investigate the medicinal nature of holy basil compared to different species of the same genus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lipid oxidation in food leads to rancidity, which compromises the sensory properties of food and makes it unappealing to consumers. The growing trend towards natural additives and preservatives means that new antioxidants are emerging for use in foods. This book provides an overview of the food antioxidants currently available and their applications in different food products. Part one provides background information on a comprehensive list of the main natural and synthetic antioxidants used in food. Part two looks at methodologies for using antioxidants in food, focusing on the efficacy of antioxidants. Part three covers the main food commodities in which antioxidants are used. - Reviews the various types of antioxidants used in food preservation, including chapters on tea extracts, natural plant extracts and synthetic phenolics - Analyses the performance of antixoxidants in different food systems - Compiles significant international research and advancements
Book Synopsis Climate Change Science Compendium 2009 by : Catherine P. McMullen
Download or read book Climate Change Science Compendium 2009 written by Catherine P. McMullen and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2009 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Climate Change Science Compendium presents some of the issues and ideas that have emerged since the close of research for consideration by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report over three years ago. Focusing on work that brings new insights to aspects of Earth System Science at various scales, it discusses findings from the International Polar Year and from new technologies that enhance our abilities to see the Earth’s Systems in new ways. Evidence of unexpected rates of change in Arctic sea-ice extent, ocean acidification, and species loss emphasizes the urgency needed to develop management strategies for addressing climate change.
Book Synopsis Drugs of Natural Origin by : Gunnar Samuelsson
Download or read book Drugs of Natural Origin written by Gunnar Samuelsson and published by Swedish Pharmaceutical Press. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs of Natural Origin is a unique multidisciplinary book suitable for undergraduate and graduate students and teachers in the area of natural product science, but also as a complementary book for disciplines like medicinal chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology. The book can also serve society as a scientific source for the understanding of a sustainable use of natural products in the development of new drugs, scientifically based herbal remedies, and environmentally friendly biomolecules. During evolution, molecules have been developed for specific functions in nature. These bioactive substances have a potential as new drug candidates in drug development, but also as pharmacological tools, intermediates or templates for synthesis of drugs. This book deals with terrestrial and marine bioactive substances of plant, microbial or animal origin. The occurrence, biosynthesis, isolation, chemistry and medical use are described together with basic research strategies. An increased understanding of the medical importance of bioactive natural products has developed in society. Since the publication of the sixth edition, six years ago, considerable progress has been achieved in the study of biosynthetic pathways, mainly based on gene technology. The revolution in high-throughput sequencing technology has given an increasing access to microbial genome sequences, which opens up new possibilities in the discovery of novel bioactive natural products. This development is reflected in a substantial revision and expansion of the book, but also removal of some sections containing products remotely associated with drugs. The new book also contains description of novel drugs marketed since the publication of the previous edition, especially in the field of diabetes, cancer and infection.

Book Synopsis Australia's Biodiversity by : Justin Healey
Download or read book Australia's Biodiversity written by Justin Healey and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is usually explored at three levels which work together to create the complexity of life on our planet ¿ genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity. It is estimated that there are 13.6 million species of plants, animals and micro-organisms on Earth. Australia has about one million of these ¿ over 7% of the world's total and more than twice the number of species in Europe and North America combined. As a developed nation, Australia has a special responsibility for biodiversity conservation and management. Of global concern are the environmental threats of loss of habitat and loss of species caused by greenhouse pollution, climate change, extinction and overpopulation. Current biodiversity conservation practice clearly acknowledges that it is far more efficient to conserve whole ecosystems which encompass biodiversity at all levels, rather than focus on a few highly visible and popular species in isolation. What are the features of Australia's biodiversity and what are we currently doing to conserve it for future generations? Can we achieve ecological sustainability?Chapter 1: Understanding BiodiversityChapter 2: Biodiversity ConservationGlossary; Facts and Figures; Additional Resources; Index
