Personal responsibility, networking and diversity are increasingly recognized as key prerequisites for agility, adaptability and innovativeness. This book encourages HR managers who want to be pioneers of, or support, digital transformation to rethink their HR strategies. It begins with a clear illustration of the difference between stability and agility in leadership and organization. Building on this, it then guides the reader through a broad range of relevant HR topics and how they compare to the new strategic orientation. All major aspects of HR management are addressed, including recruitment, learning, talent management, remuneration, performance management, corporate training, executive development and change management. Providing a comprehensive, practical, differentiated and non-dogmatic alternative to traditional approaches, the book is a must-read for all those who are concerned with sustainable HR management in the era of digitalization.

Book excerpt: This book on human resource management (HRM) research builds upon and extends the work of Professor David P. Lepak who was the Berthiaume Endowed Chair of Business Leadership in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Professor Lepak was an internationally renowned HRM scholar who believed in giving back to his profession and was committed to introduce his research findings to students as well as the business community. In addition to being a tribute to Professor Lepak and his work, this volume aims to help organizations and managers understand how to use human resource management to benefit employees while achieving organizational effectiveness. The chapters in this volume focus on strategic management of human capital resources, strategic HRM and multilevel HRM —areas of research that were central to Professor Lepak’s academic contributions. These chapters together provide important theoretical and practical implications for understanding how organizations can use HRM to generate and utilize their strategic human capital resources and how HRM interacts with internal and external factors to influence important employee and organizational outcomes. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of Human Resource Management.

Readers are introduced to different ways of thinking about systems and shown how systems can interact, triggering changes in the competitive environment – and how HR systems can either facilitate or inhibit adaptation to these changes. Peppered with international examples throughout, this book considers key HR topics such as recruitment, reward, employment relations, culture, diversity and leadership, all through a systems lens. It shows how an understanding of system dynamics can help managers to recognise complexity, accept the inevitability of short-term systemic conflicts and anticipate the likely consequences. This text will be suitable for upper-level undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA students of strategic HRM, HRM and strategic management. It will also be thought-provoking for HR professionals looking to embrace a strategic role in their organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predictions are that sustainability becomes the next big topic for Human Resource Management after internationalization and globalization. This book gives new answers to these questions: - How can HRM contribute to attracting, developing and retaining highly qualified human resources over time? - How can a paradox perspective contribute to understanding and coping with paradoxical tensions? - How can sustainability be used as a ‘deliberate strategy’ for HRM? The conceptual part of the book looks at the notion of sustainability, opens it up for Strategic HRM and identifies blind spots in Strategic HRM theory. Paradox theory is introduced as an analytical framework for Sustainable HRM. Initial suggestions are made for sustainability strategies and for coping with paradoxes and tensions. The exploratory part examines how 50 European Multinationals communicate their understanding of sustainability and HRM and which HR issues and practices they are linking to the topic.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,3, International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef - Bonn (International Management), course: International Human Resource Management, language: English, abstract: Introduction Designate a person a loser and he will behave like one. But why is it, that some managers are not aware of the severe consequences treating their employees like that? Is it because of a deficit in managing people within an opposed cultural working environment or is it because of an inconvenient HRM strategy? Skinner, B. (1971) argued, that people are simply a product of the stimuli they get from the external world. Interestingly, negative reinforcement causes behavioral change in undesirable ways, whereas positive reinforcement causes rather intended change. General management is therefore not only accountable for defining such stimuli according the corporate strategy, but also its degree of involvement is a prerequisite for a successful HRM (Baron, J. & Kreps, D., 1999).
