But there's another aspect to English's popularity: the way it can make life more fun. For centuries, people have used the language to entertain themselves and others through amusing and often naughty verses known as limericks. The best examples can be thought of as whimsical, micro-short stories expressing experiences to which nearly anyone can relate. "Limericks and other earthy verses" is a collection of limericks and other humorous verses I have written over the years. I invite you to read them, repeat them and have a rollicking good time!

The often skillfully constructed verses are typically humorous or nonsense poems and generally have a five-line meter with a very strict rhyming pattern.Following the success of the ebook versions of A Pocket Full Of Limericks and Another Pocket Full Of Limericks, this volume is now available as both an ebook and a new traditional hard copy. It is a compendium of almost 400 limericks and nonsense verse for adults and children. It includes all of the limericks from the first two volumes, with more than 100 additional contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Lear is remembered, and rightly so, as the Father of the Limerick. Were it not for him, this little five line verse form may never have become such a beloved, ubiquitous part of our literary and popular culture. Yet the very thing that makes the limerick so appealing held no appeal for Edward Lear. The final line of his verses brought no twist, and sought no giggle. It was a summing up, and nothing more. But Lear had opened Victorian eyes to the possibilities inherent in the limerick: A Book of Nonsense was a runaway bestseller. In 1872 Lear published one hundred new limericks, hoping to repeat his earlier success. But while his original verses are still fondly remembered today, still anthologised, still quoted in mainstream and social media, his next hundred limericks are unknown. Why? Because the limerick had moved on without him, acquiring a life of its own and romping towards the twentieth century with outlandish, irreverent and often obscene delight. And Lear couldn't follow. It just wasn't in his nature to go there. So having launched the boat, he now stood alone on the dock and watched it sail off into the distance. Limericks After Lear breathes new life into Edward Lear's creations. Book One, The Fifth Line, took A Book of Nonsense as its starting point and sent all 112 verses off in new directions. Book Two retrieves those lost, forgotten verses of 1872 and presents them complete: all 100 of Lear's originals, plus a brand new limerick for each that, I hope, will make you giggle. They're family-friendly, too: )

Book excerpt: THE GENTLEMAN ABOUT TOWN has performed a service of notable worth in preserving and giving definitive form to the wealth of latter-day folk-lore which is contained within the covers of "Immortalia." American folk-lore has of necessity sought cover, driven by the undiscriminating tirades and sadistic tyrannies of the Mrs. Grundys who are an irremovable part of this melange we know as modern civilization. Undoubtedly, much material of permanent literary value has been lost. Literary worth in folk-lore depends on just one thing -- its spontaneity. Folk-lore is no hot-house plant, to be fertilized with refined chemicals and maintained at constant temperature when the winds of reality blow. On the contrary, folk-lore seeks its nourishment in the fertilizing essences of nature, and springs triumphantly forth no matter how fierce the winds or how rigorous the frost. Just as some beautiful plants seem to grow in opposition to all efforts of the gardeners and the horticulturists, so does folk-lore thrive in the face of determined efforts of the sentimentalists to deny its very existence. Folk-lore is, after all, nothing but the literature of the people. It, more truly than any more polished side of literary effort, reflects the average standard of all the people at the time of its currency. The very fact of its existence is dependent upon the willingness of the people (not of the literary guildmasters) to keep it alive. Literature with a capital "L" has all the stabilizing factors of the printed word and of learned tradition to perpetuate it—folk-lore lives only in the voices of the people themselves— the source from which the material in this book has been drawn, from cover to cover. It is not the purpose of this book to override good taste — indeed, the fact that it is issued not for public sale, but for subscribers only, is a definite and willing concession to the prevalence of the same good taste which keeps a courtesan and a courtier alike from announcing their morning ablutions to an incurious world. However, good taste has nothing in common with good folk-lore. One is artificial, the other natural. One is the essence of refinement, the other is the rawest of raw material. The one is the glossy vender; all external handsomeness, the other the sturdy fabric from which all strength is drawn. In fact, almost all good folk-lore (and by that I mean all real folk-lore) is in distinct bad taste in drawing rooms and among the niceties of society. It is as much an outcropping of underlying fundamental strength as those deep-rooted rocks which are the farmer's despair even though they be the ribs of the earth. These "Immortalia" are homely; they are imaginative; they are couched in the most vigorous of language; they are crude in literary form, oftentimes ; yet they are what people—just ordinary people, undistinguished and unknown,—have been thinking and saying and singing for their own delectation during the last seventy-five years.

Book excerpt: For more than 200 years, the limerick has been loved for its mordant wit, breathtaking rhymes, swinging rhythm, groaning puns, and ability to paint outrageous mental pictures. This book analyzes the limerick's origin and evolution as the best-known humorous verse form in the English-speaking world. It also examines previous attempts to capture the history of the limerick, including those that used guesswork, presented flawed conclusions and even contradicted each other. Findings are laid out logically and chronologically, so readers can easily follow the thread of every claim.

The most obscure fictional critics who have appeared in the pages of the Great Space Alien Novels of yore have, in their machinations, also lent tacit-ephemeral, imaginary praise to this magnificent tome of verse. Alice says strat-tea-tackfully, every poem must have a pie thrown at it to lend it color and flavor, but there are rumbles in the world where every blade of grass cries, and as we run through it, it tries to comb the hair of our sorrows. By the Poet Laureate of the Primitive Planets, (Milky Way Division), Category 15297xt7388. Recommended study manual for the curriculum of the Backward-Planet-Studies Department of the League of Benevolent Galaxies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Learning to Perform. Carol Simpson Stern and Bruce Henderson introduce the art and craft of performing literary texts, including poetry, prose fiction, and drama, as well as personal narratives and ethnographic materials. They present a performance methodology that offers instruction in close reading and analysis, the development and refinement of performance skills, and the ability to think critically about and discuss a performance. As students become reacquainted with the world of the imagination and its possibilities, the insights they gain in the classroom can become the basis for achievement not only on the stage or in front of the camera but in many facets of public life. By addressing an expanded sense of text that includes cultural as well as literary artifacts, Stern and Henderson bridge the gap between oral interpretation and the more inclusive field of performance studies. A substantial appendix provides a dozen texts for performance in the classroom, including works by Jane Hamilton, Willa Cather, Henry James, E.M. Forster, Henrik Ibsen, Jane Austen, and Michael S. Bowman. --Book Jacket.
