Book excerpt: Excerpt from Limerick and Its Sieges As other notes concerning the places of chief historic interest in the County of Limerick, were put together by the writer more for his own information than with any eye towards their publication, at least in a book form. Whatever time could be spared from other occupatlons was employed some years ago in collecting and throwing into readable form whatever could be got together respecting the castles and abbeys, so many of which are to be found dotted over the County of Limerick, and con cerning which so little is popularly known. In the pursuit of such a study the City of Limerick must of course have occupied the most important place, for to omit it would be like leavmg out the part of Hamlet in the play. The whole was to some ex tent completed and the manuscript had been laid aside for the last five or six years, though portions have occasionally found their way into print. When. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Limerick: A Poem in Three Cantos The many desperate battles fought by Irishmen in defence of their country, endeavoring to wrest her from the grasp of the invader, have been the theme of Patriots the world over. But to none of her battles should Irishmen look with more pride than the Siege of Limerick, in which the Irish, under the indomitable Sarsfield, repelled the army of King William, alter a terrible resistance. The "Broken Treaty" is still sadly remembered, and Irishmen wherever they may reside are well aware that their country was never really conquered by the Saxon, nor is it to this day. As poets, at all times and in all climes, have sting of their battles and heroes, from the days of Homer to the present, and as the poets of Ireland hardly allude to some of its greatest victories. I, an humble aspirant, will endeavor to exhalt some of the heroes of my race in the following cantos, which I trust the reader will look over with an impartial spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orange and Green: A Tale of the Boyne and Limerick My Dear Lads: The subject of Ireland is one which has for some years been a very prominent one, and is likely, I fear, for some time yet to occupy a large share of public attention. For many years the laws in Ireland and the rights of Irishmen have been identical with those which we enjoy in England. The discontent manifested in the troubles of recent years has had its root in an older sense of grievance, for which there was, unhappily, only too abundant reason. The great proportion of the soil of Ireland was taken from the original owners and handed over to Cromwell's followers, and for years the land that still remained in the hands of Irishmen was subject to the covetousness of a party of greedy intriguers, who had sufficient influence to sway the proceedings of government. The result was the rising of Ireland, nominally in defense of the rights of King James, but really an effort of despair on the part of those who deemed their religion, their property, and even their lives threatened by this absolute ascendency of the Protestant party in the government of the country. I have drawn my information from a variety of sources; but as I wished you to see the matter from the Irish point of view I have drawn most largely from the history of those events by Mr. O'Driscol, published sixty years ago. There is, however, but little difference of opinion between Irish and English authors as to the general course of the war, or as to the atrocious conduct of William's army of foreign mercenaries toward the people of Ireland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Preserved, or the Siege of Londonderry and Battle of Aughrim: With Lyrical Poetry and Biographical Notes To rescue them from the utter oblivion into which they were about to sink, not only through primary defectiveness in matter and in style, but by reason of the accumulated errors of many edi tions, and to entitle them to a place among the more reputable accounts of the transactions of the eventful period to which they refer, they have been subjected to a process of excision and renewal, so unsparingly, that although it was the editor's first design to appear before the public on the present occasion, so far as a portion of the work is con cerned, more as a reviser than with pretensions to originality, he has been imperceptibly led almost to change the authorship of these works.
