This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of studies of light-particle emission associated with damped nuclear reactions for investigating properties of the reaction mechanism, in particular of the energy dissipation mechanism, is discussed. Processes of instantaneous particle emission are reviewed, as related to heavy-ion reactions. Methods are outlined concerning information on the conditions of the intermediate nuclear system at scission revealed in the processes of statistical particle evaporation from the reaction fragments. They are employed in studies of neutron emission in the damped reactions 165Ho+56Fe and 165Ho+136Xe, yielding evidence for a rapid thermalization and a relaxation of the mass-to-charge asymmetry of the system. Progress is reported for attempts to achieve a unified description of energy dissipation, nucleon exchange, and particle emission in damped nuclear reactions. 19 figures, 1 table.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary results are presented from three different experiments in which light particles emitted during the course of heavy-ion-induced reactions have been studied. The three experiments involved measurements of energies, angular correlations, and multiplicities of neutrons or alpha particles emitted in coincidence with deeply inelastic products or with evaporation residue produced as follows: (1) neutrons from reactions of 16O with 93Nb at 12.9 MeV/u; (2) alphas produced in the same system; and (3) neutrons produced in 12C reactions with 158Gd and in 13C reactions with 157Gd at about 12.4 MeV/u. This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emission of alpha particles in coincidence with the most deeply inelastic heavy-ion reactions has been studied for 181Ta 165Ho at 1354 MeV laboratory energy and /sup nat/Ag + 84Kr at 664 MeV. Alpha particle energy spectra and angular distributions, in coincidence with a projectile-like fragment, were acquired both in the reaction plane and out of the reaction plane at a fixed in-plane angle. The in-plane data for both systems are employed to show that the bulk of the alpha particles in coincidence with the deep-inelastic exit channel can be explained by evaporation from the fully accelerated fragments. Average velocity diagrams, .cap alpha.-particle energy spectra as a function of angle in several rest frames, and .cap alpha.-particle angular distributions are presented. The out-of-plane alpha particle angular distributions and the gamma-ray multiplicities are used to study the transfer and partitioning of angular momentum between the two fragments. For the /sup nat/Ag + 84Kr system, individual fragment spins are extracted form the alpha particle angular distributions as a function of mass asymmetry while the sum of the fragment spins is derived from the gamma-ray multiplicities. These data, together with the fragment kinetic energies, are consistent with rigid rotation of an intermediate complex consisting of two substantially deformed spheroids in near proximity. These data also indicate that some angular momentum fractionation exists at the largest asymmetries examined. Out-of-plane alpha particle distributions, gamma-ray multiplicities, fragment spins as well as the formalism for the spin evaluation at various levels of sophistication are presented.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exclusive measurements of light particles, deuterons, tritons and alphas, in coincidence with Evaporation Residues (ER), were performed at the Holified Heavy Ion Research Facility of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory using the large detector array HILI (Heavy Ion Light Ion). Heavy fragments produced in the reaction (Z 35), were stopped in the Ionisation Chamber, where their energy, atomic number (Z) and position were measured. Coincident light particles, were detected in the 192 element hodoscope placed behind the chamber, where its charge (Z) and energy were measured. Also the time of flight relative to the radio frequency of the cyclotron, allowed identification of protons deuterons and tritons.

Book Synopsis Mechanism of Dissipation in Heavy-ion Reactions by :

Book excerpt: We discuss a new surface-plus-window mechanism for the conversion of nuclear collective energy into internal degrees of freedom at intermediate excitation energies. This novel dissipation mechanism, which results from the long mean free path of nucleons inside a nucleus, involves interactions of either one or two nucleons with the moving nuclear surface and also, for dumbbell-like shapes encountered in heavy-ion reactions and fission, the transfer of nucleons through the window separating the two portions of the system. To illustrate the effect of surface-plus-window dissipation on heavy-ion-fusion reactions we present dynamical calculations for values of the dissipation strength corresponding to 27% and 100% of the Swiatecki wall-formula value, as well as for no dissipation. In addition to dynamical thresholds for compound-nucleus formation in heavy-ion reactions, our new picture describes such other phenomena as experimental mean fission-fragment kinetic energies for the fission of nuclei throughout the periodic system, enhancement in neutron emission prior to fission, short scission-to-scission times in sequential ternary fission, widths of mass and charge distributions in deep-inelastic heavy-ion reactions, and widths of isoscalar giant quadrupole and giant octupole resonances. 32 refs., 2 figs.
