She watches as the small community wrestles with its own identity, afraid to share her own struggle to discover her own self worth. As hardened as she is by her past, Percy cannot resist the gentle nudges of the people around her. Her gruff exterior begins to soften under the friendship of the few women in the camp, and she has begun to attract the attention of the camp's doctor, Joshua Wells. The light of human and divine love beckon Percy to take a risk. Can she reopen the pain of the past and allow healing to begin?

Book excerpt: While numerous studies have celebrated Thomas Merton's witness as an interfaith pioneer, poet, and peacemaker, there have been few systematic treatments of his Christology as such, and no sustained exploration to date of his relationship to the Russian Sophia" tradition. This book looks to Thomas Merton as a "classic" theologian of the Christian tradition from East to West, and offers an interpretation of his mature Christology, with special attention to his remarkable prose poem of 1962, Hagia Sophia. Bringing Merton's mystical-prophetic Vision fully into dialogue with contemporary Christology, Russian sophiology, and Zen, as well as figures such as John Henry Newman and Abraham Joshua Heschel, the author carefully but boldly builds the case that Sophia, the same theological eros that animated Merton's religious imagination in a period of tremendous fragmentation and violence, might infuse new vitality into our own. A study of uncommon depth and scope, inspired throughout by Merton's extraordinary catholicity. Christopher Pramuk, PhD, is assistant professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of two books and numerous essays, and the recipient of the Catholic Theological Society of America's 2009 Catherine Mowry LaCugna Award. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palmer Bullock has made a good life for himself. All of his many accomplishments have been based on his very high and rigid principles and his rules of ethical conduct. Some would think such a life grueling and unrewarding, but for Palmer, it is the easy way; rewarding in its certainty and pleasing to his sense of right and wrong. He has a good law practice, a generous gentleman's farm, a pretty wife, a son, and a daughter. Then, one remote act sets in motion a chain of events which, like cascading dominos falling one upon the next, upsets his entire world: his confidence in his rules of life, his confidence in his self-control and self-determination, and his belief in himself as a good man. The story of Palmer's fall includes passion overriding reason, questionable business dealings, a haunting injustice from the distant past, and the friendship of a lifetime. Jack Dawson, the author, was born in October of 1940, in Bainbridge, Georgia-a still-small town, in the southeastern part of the state, split evenly by the sleepy and serene Flint River-and grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, where he graduated high school in 1958. Being young and without sufficient direction or initiative to pursue an education, he joined the U. S. Navy and enjoyed nearly four years of great adventure at sea. This was in the day when all healthy males did their time in service to their country; sooner or later; by joining voluntarily, through the path to gentleman-hood offered by the ROTC in college, or by draft. After finishing his militarily obligation and being released from active duty, and having gained an immeasurably greater sense of maturity and personal responsibility, he decided to pursue a college education. He studied for a year at a local college, making the dean's list in order to offset his abysmal high school academic record, before he was then accepted at Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, where he majored in aerospace engineering. During his junior year, he, just by chance, took a ride with a friend in a two seat air plane; and his life would never the same. He quit school after finishing his junior year and, after applying was hired by a major airline to work in the engineering department, all the while learning to fly and building hours and, at night, earning a degree in Mathematics. Eventually, he was transferred to Flight Operations where he flew the big jets until retirement in 1999. He then moved to remote region of the West Virginia mountains, where he began to write in earnest. An urge to write had always been in the back of his head, kept there by the many obligations, necessary and otherwise, of day to day living. Soon, through the auspices of a new found friend, a sporting magazine writer, he was writing a weekly column for a local newspaper, and, aside from that, began writing a novel and converting some of his columns into short stories The writing of the short stories, he found, provided an interlude in his writing of the novel which allowed the characters therein to decide what they were going to do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Testament to a New Dawn: Time of Revelation' is a unique collection of transcribed messages from ascended masters and other non-physical intelligence. They are relayed through mind transference [trance] through the medium of Michael D Champion. The messages contain guidance, teaching, philosophy, mathematical formulations, parables and topical information all pertaining to our present way of life and how, if we continue upon our present course, it will affect not only the continued existence of the human race, but the whole of the planet and all life upon it. Some messages will seem quite harsh, but they are brought forward in a loving manner, just as a parent may speak to a wayward child to set him or her upon the correct path of life. It is time to learn to live together as one co-operative civilisation. If we could somehow achieve this, perhaps the suffering we see around the world at this time may be less. In the three volumes of 'Testament to a New Dawn' we are given hope of a new world to come, but it is only by learning from the past and our current situation, that we can move forward to a better future. The teachings given are profound and although there may appear to be a religious theme at times, this should not be shied away from. The messages are non-denominational and acknowledge that all faiths are as one. We must learn to recognise the universal consciousness that is attainable to everyone through prayer and meditation. The messages given in all three volumes of 'Testament to a New Dawn' are from beings who are desperately trying to gain our attention. Knowledge is key if we are to survive in the future.

Book excerpt: Though starkly different from Pollyanna, the book that propelled author Eleanor H. Porter to worldwide acclaim, the engrossing novel Dawn plumbs some of the same themes as its predecessor, including the importance of always maintaining an optimistic outlook on life, no matter how dire the circumstances you are facing. Set against the backdrop of World War I, the novel's protagonist is a young man whose vision is gradually degrading. Will he continue to wallow in his despair, or will he find a way to accept his encroaching blindness?

Book excerpt: Journey to Spain with “stories that tap into history, politics and culture to cast a cloak of horror and humor on the city’s distinctive neighborhoods” (The Miami Herald). For some, Barcelona is a European enchantress of nouveau architecture, fusion tapas, and fine cava. To others, it’s a Gothic labyrinth of tiny streets to lose oneself in; hashish-clouded after-hours bars to forget the time; dimly lit plazas with global bohemians squatting, prostitutes tempting. But come morning, its cold cobblestones and misty beachfronts have even darker stories to tell. This collection of crime fiction includes brand-new stories by Jordi Sierra i Fabra, Imma Monsó, Santiago Roncagliolo, Francisco González Ledesma, Valerie Miles, David Barba, Isabel Franc, Lolita Bosch, Eric Taylor-Aragón, Antonia Cortijos, Cristina Fallarás, Raúl Argemí, Teresa Solana, and Andreu Martín. “The 14 stories . . . hew closely to the bleak spirit of the noir genre, whether reaching back to the 1920s . . . or chronicling chaotic immigrant-infused present-day Barcelona.” —Publishers Weekly “Each [contributor] presents his or her own personal picture of the city, and as a whole, the anthology projects a many-hued sense of place. As portrayed here, Barcelona is a city that looks different from every angle.” —Booklist “With 50 titles in its noir series and counting, Akashic adds another fine anthology to the lineup. . . . Fans of Spanish literature and crime fiction will enjoy.” —Library Journal

In the autumn of 1982, a single stone fell from high on the south face of Annapurna and struck Alex MacIntyre on the head, killing him instantly and robbing the climbing world of one of its greatest talents. Although only twenty-eight years old, Alex was already one of the leading figures of British mountaineering's most successful era. His ascents included hard new routes on Himalayan giants like Dhaulagiri and Changabang and a glittering record of firsts in the Alps and Andes. Yet how Alex climbed was as important as what he climbed. He was a mountaineering prophet, sharing with a handful of contemporaries - including his climbing partner Voytek Kurtyka - the vision of a purer form of alpinism on the world's highest peaks. One Day As A Tiger, John Porter's revelatory and poignant memoir of his friend Alex MacIntyre, shows mountaineering at its extraordinary best and tragic worst - and draws an unforgettable picture of a dazzling, argumentative and exuberant legend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some respects, this second book of poetry is quite similar to the first. In other ways, it is quite different. This particular book of poetry encompasses a broader range of subjects that have not only influenced me but society as a whole. I welcome this revelation as the future of our society seems bleak without us coming together in one spirit and not divided along any lines that would cause inferiority or superiority between humanity in general. There is great hatred that has permeated our culture from its inception. It is my belief and hope that through love, we can come together to appreciate our differences and our similarities. I fervently believe that the path to perfect love is only obtained through the love of God. As a Christian, I have come to embrace my great weaknesses and the courage to commit my life to not judging others but loving them. This book of poetry attempts to convey this message by glorifying the Person of Jesus Christ through the humility of words. I'm forever indebted to God for my family, without whom, the inspiration for many poems would not have come about.
