Outstandingly well paced and tightly plotted, the novel also stands out in its handling of various psychological themes.”—Booklist Eerily attuned to one another, twins Regina and Renata are so identical that even their mother can’t tell them apart. Then tragedy strikes: a vicious attack leaves one twin dead and the other so traumatized that she turns totally inward, incapable of telling anyone what happened or even who she is. She remains lost to the world, until the day Mark, a family friend, comes to visit—and the young woman utters her first intelligible word. As she recovers, still with no memory of the past, her nightmares grow steadily more frightful, followed by wild fits of hysteria and dark mood swings. Her strange outbursts seem to coincide with the grisly serial murders that have begun plaguing Seattle. Could she be the killer? Determined to dispel his suspicion, Mark stakes out her home. The unholy sight he witnesses one night will haunt his soul for the rest of his life. . . .

Before she has an opportunity to figure out where she is, an electronic replica of her forms and it is void of all clothing. She tries to reach her double, but she couldnt because she floats in an anti-gravity like environment. She calls her double ELECTRA. Electra can speak and she helps Vera to orient herself. Vera asks where she is and to her bewilderment, Electra tells her that she is in Cyberspace. She needs help and Electra helps her to communicate with the real world, using her laptop. Because Vera and Frank work together on the program, they bring Frank into cyberspace with the same program and then they go to work on the grid. Electra decodes C-mail messages that terminate on the grid, before the grid boosts them to the recipient. This is where Vera and Frank find out that Dr. JENNIFER BARLOW, an employee of RDC commits espionage, sending company secret information to JIM WELLER, from NASA. Jim, in turn, sends this information to YURI GASMAN at the Kremlin in Moscow. Not only that, but Jennifers father, who works for NASA is also committing espionage, sending UFO information to the same source, by way of a drop-off point in an old barn. ABOT, an alien replica, also residing in cyberspace rewrites Veras program, allowing Vera and Frank to return to the real world. Based on an unfortunate accident, they now have a new tool to solve cyber crimes. When Dr. ART DISBROW, CEO of RDC finds out that he has espionage activity in his midst, he was furious. He ordered RAY DOWNEY, his security officer to fix this mess. Ray and the NASA security chief, SKIP FERRELL, work up plans to eliminate the villains. One week later, they eliminate the scoundrels and no one knows who did it. The exception is IGOR BARLOW, Jennifers father. He went to jail.

Book excerpt: Pity the poor politicians! With all the talk about Proposition 13 and budget-balancing amendments, they hardly know where to turn to squeeze their fellow citizens for new taxes. And if they can't get new tax money to dole out to the special-interest groups, how will they carry out their crusades? How will they promote the national welfare? More important, how will they get reelected? That's where Representative John Smith comes in, in W. E. Dunn's hilarious and to-the-point political fantasy. John Smith is a young state legislator who comes up with a revolutionary idea--a tax on sex! This Sex Tax will be the kind of levy that people will love to pay, and, best of all, the Internal Revenue Service (so-called) won't be able to stick its finger in the pie. The Sex Tax idea takes the nation by storm. Its path is smoothed greatly by the skilled hands of Madam Regina, a local businesswoman who has had many close contacts with the big boys in the statehouse. She puts it into the proper channel and Mr. Smith goes to Washington to present his plan to the nation's representatives. Soon the President and Congress are falling all over each other trying to get in on the Sex Tax act. The President likes it because it will stop people from "living in sin." The Congress doesn't care so much about stopping the sin, but they know votes when they see them, and they can tell that every department of government wants a piece of the action. The Pentagon wonders about morale in the military. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare calls for an investigation of the health risks. The Commerce Department reassures businessmen that their relationships with their secretaries won't be affected by taxing sex. Of course, in this modern world of special interests, the Sex Tax has to penetrate a thick wall of resistance on its first time out. Environmentalists oppose it, and protesters mount a demonstration in front of the White House in support of free love. And the IRS wants the country to deduct the whole thing from its mind. But, as W. E. Dunn wittily proves in this provocative satire, nothing can stop the Sex Tax. It is truly an idea whose time is coming.

Book excerpt: All human beings are born and all human beings die. In these two ways we are finite: our lives begin and our lives come to an end. Historically philosophers have concentrated attention on our mortality—and comparatively little has been said about being born and how it shapes our existence. Alison Stone sets out to overcome this oversight by providing a systematic philosophical account of how being born shapes our condition as human beings. Drawing on both feminist philosophy and existentialist concerns about the structure of meaningful human existence, Stone offers an original perspective on human existence. She explores how human existence is shaped by the way that we are born. Taking natality into account transforms our view of human existence and illuminates how many of its aspects are connected with our birth. These aspects include dependency, the relationality of the self, vulnerability, reception and inheritance of culture and history, embeddedness in social power, situatedness, and radical contingency. Considering natality also sheds new light on anxiety, mortality, and the temporality of human life. This book therefore bears on death and the meaning of life, as well as many debates in feminist and continental philosophy.
