Book excerpt: William Henry Harrison was the ninth President of the United States and bears the unfortunate distinction of being the first sitting president to die in office. He also had the shortest term - a scant 32 days. The author, Burr, has not attempted to write a complete history of the time, only the events relevant to Harrison. Before he became president, he gained distinction at the Battle of Tippecanoe and later served as general, winning an instrumental victory at the Battle of the Thames. For 19th-century and presidential historians, this text offers an in-depth look at a man of many firsts but an oft-forgotten president.?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of William Henry Harrison In presenting the "Life and Times of William Henry Harrison to the public, some explanation of the title may be necessary. We have christened our work Life and Times, to distinguish it from several other books already out upon the same subject. By "Times," we do not mean all the events of the country during the life of Harrison, but merely those with which he was immediately connected. In recording these, we have been governed solely by facts, and we leave these facts to speak for themselves. If he were not at this moment before the people for their suffrages as a candidate for a great and important station, we might have indulged in compliment and praise; but we have no disposition, and disclaim all intention of making our history political. In our Appendix will be found many papers of great interest, connected with the life of General Harrison, and to which we invite attention. In preparing our work for publication, we have been greatly assisted by Butler's History of Kentucky; McAffee's History of the Late War; Hall's Life of Harrison, and Dawson's Life of Harrison. We have also used freely the Washington Mirror; Nile's Register; the Congressional Journals, and the Journals of the Legislatures of Ohio, Indiana, &c. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fowles Pringle (1897–1958) was an American historian and writer most famous for his witty but scholarly biography of Theodore Roosevelt which won the Pulitzer prize in 1932, as well as the scholarly biography of William Howard Taft. Although he won the Pulitzer Prize in biography for Theodore Roosevelt, a Biography, Henry F. Pringle's most famous work is considered The Life and Times of William Howard Taft: A Biography. The William Howard Taft biography was published in 1939 and is often considered the definitive biography of the 27th president. Pringle's biography of Taft was a more balanced and thoughtful piece of work than the Roosevelt study. He had unlimited access to the large collection of Taft papers. Moreover, he discovered in Taft a "tortured soul" whose life could best be understood from the inside rather than from the outside. This offered a more serious challenge to the biographer than the chiefly visible exploits of Teddy Roosevelt. A newspaper reporter, he later become a professor at the Columbia University School of Journalism, and served as chief of the publications division of the Office of War Information in 1942-1943.

Henry Wall, M.D., a successful southwest Georgia physician and state senator of the mid-1900s. After Dr. Wall became unwittingly addicted to a prescription drug, he found himself trapped in a nightmarish chain of events. Arrested on federal drug charges, he was convicted and sentenced to the only U.S. prison for addicts. His community was shocked and his entire family including the author, then 17, was devastated. In prison, Dr. Wall was subjected against his will to the CIA's notorious MK Ultra drug experiments. The Wall family's half-century nightmare should give every American fair warning: while government is essential to protect us, its powers must never be left unchecked.

As a member of Congress, he sponsored legislation dividing the Northwest Territory. As governor of the Indiana Territory, he led a movement to suspend the provisions of the Northwest Ordinance and earned a reputation for acquiring large land cessions from the Indian tribes, winning the affection of white settlers and the animosity of Native Americans. Serving as brigadier general during the War of 1812, he then served in the Ohio legislature and the U.S. Senate, and was named minister to Colombia. This bibliography provides a guide to the literature on his extensive career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning culture critic for Time magazine comes the tremendously controversial, yet highly persuasive, argument that our devotion to the largely unexamined myth of egalitarianism lies at the heart of the ongoing "dumbing of America." Americans have always stubbornly clung to the myth of egalitarianism, of the supremacy of the individual average man. But here, at long last, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic William A. Henry III takes on, and debunks, some basic, fundamentally ingrained ideas: that everyone is pretty much alike (and should be); that self-fulfillment is more imortant thant objective achievement; that everyone has something significant to contribute; that all cultures offer something equally worthwhile; that a truly just society would automatically produce equal success results across lines of race, class, and gender; and that the common man is almost always right. Henry makes clear, in a book full of vivid examples and unflinching opinions, that while these notions are seductively democratic they are also hopelessly wrong.
