Book excerpt: Beyond sending a "get-well card," many people know little about supporting someone through a serious illness -- let alone passing through one themselves. Life on Hold answers the need of many people who face -- or may soon be faced with -- a health crisis of longer duration. Written by a father and daughter who lost their wife and mother to an extended battle with cancer, this sensitive personal journal is dotted with illustrations from real-life survivors. Each chapter offers tools for dealing with the challenges of physical illness. A practical, spiritual handbook, it shows sufferers, ministers, lay workers, family, and friends how to trust God during a season of recovery or release. Scripture and counsel on getting through the first several weeks are among this book's most rare and precious gifts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riyadh is a city of masks, a city "like a pressure cooker that's about to explode," a city that sleeps on a pile of words that no one dares utter. Saudi society has split into two camps, one adopting the slogan that God is strict in punishment, the other that God is merciful and forgiving. In the background the media trumpets that everything is perfect. Saudi writer Fahd al-Atiq explores this world through the character of Khaled, whose dysfunctional life, humdrum but rich in memories and introspection, bridges the gap between the old impoverished world of Najd and the consumerism of the years after the various oil booms, symbolized in this novel by the family's move from the lively back streets of the old city to an isolated dream villa in the new suburbs, where their dreams are never quite fulfilled and their lives remain permanently 'on hold.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You're going about your daily routine when you suddenly feel an odd squirming in your chest. You quickly realize that it is your heart, flopping around like a fish out of water. What do you do? You probably panic! Maybe you also experience dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath, or maybe you have no other symptoms at all. But it's still very scary because... it's your heart! This is how chronic atrial fibrillation starts for many of us, and those who develop it often have little to no prior medical history to speak of. Once the demon a-fib has set in, though, we soon find our lives redirected down a dark uncharted path, our days consumed by vain attempts to divine the elusive origins of this mysterious malady as we desperately seek a panacea that can give us back our "normal"... or at least some way to weaken the grasp that this unwelcome beast now has on our lives. Through it all, we put on performances of a lifetime for the rest of the world, acting as though all is well while coping as best we can with this invisible disorder... one that he who has never suffered through it cannot possibly understand. Try as we might, though, our lives and relationships will surely end up the worse for wear. Within the pages of this book lies one man's personal account of how this condition impacted his life, how he managed to overcome it, the valuable knowledge that was acquired along the way, and the permanent marks that the journey has left on his subsequent existence. This medical autobiography is written in an informal first-person conversational style with accounts and information presented in such a way that it should be easy for just about everyone to understand and relate to.

Book excerpt: This National Book Award finalist is a revealing and beautifully written memoir and family history from acclaimed photographer Sally Mann. In this groundbreaking book, a unique interplay of narrative and image, Mann's preoccupation with family, race, mortality, and the storied landscape of the American South are revealed as almost genetically predetermined, written into her DNA by the family history that precedes her. Sorting through boxes of family papers and yellowed photographs she finds more than she bargained for: "deceit and scandal, alcohol, domestic abuse, car crashes, bogeymen, clandestine affairs, dearly loved and disputed family land . . . racial complications, vast sums of money made and lost, the return of the prodigal son, and maybe even bloody murder." In lyrical prose and startlingly revealing photographs, she crafts a totally original form of personal history that has the page-turning drama of a great novel but is firmly rooted in the fertile soil of her own life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is almost a Herculean task writing the foreword of this very important book, Lay Hold on Eternal Life, having also been its editor. I thank Reverend Folorunso Joseph for giving me such a rare privilege. Lay Hold on Eternal Life is not the work of a man but of the Holy Spirit of God. It will show you that although many people, by their faith in Jesus Christ, receive eternal life of God, many are not able to attain eternal life with God, largely because they lack the revelation about what to do. According to the author, many depend on their own strength to run the Christian race but are consistently frustrated by Satan and his fallen angels. But wise Christians know that it is neither by power nor by might but by the Spirit of the Lord. As you read this most inspiring book, you will see heaven clearer than ever. You will come to the knowledge that those who attain the kingdom and inherit all things are not defeated believers but Christians who overcome. You will therefore be stirred to seek first the kingdom of God at the expense of the mundane things of the world that perish with time. It will strengthen you to lay hold on eternal life and press forward at all times (like Apostle Paul) to attain the crown of glory, which awaits anyone who finishes his race well. This book is destined to be a spiritual classic. It will expose to you satanic institutions and strategies he and his fallen angels use to lure man out of grace. It will increase your faith in Jesus Christ, enrich your hope in him, and enlarge you in the grace of the Savior. It will help you to overcome fear and unbelief and to avoid those things that the Lord says will not help anyone to overcome and inherit the kingdom of God. The authors presentation is quite vivid and practical and will leave you with a great hope of attaining eternal life and of reigning with the Lord forever. Lanre Jacob

She has added an extensive afterword based on her visits to Sonqo in 1995 and 2000 and has updated and revised parts of the original text. The book focuses on the very real problem of cultural continuity in a changing world, and Allen finds that the hold life has in 2002 is not the same as it was in 1985.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is a person sure to be saved? How can they build up assurance of salvation and reject a profane life? What can they do to overcome sin and please King Jesus? These sermons all have a common thread running through them: to show you how to lay hold of salvation in Jesus Christ. Gifford is very precise in laying out what each text means, as well as giving a careful and thorough explanation taking ample time to bring to light practical perspectives on his texts. In this, he will bring these topics home to your soul, and you will be a better Christian for reading him. In his first sermon on taking hold of eternal life, Gifford explains, “Charge them that are rich in this world … that they may lay hold on eternal life,” (1 Tim. 6:17-19). He will show you how to lay up the good foundation you need in order to stand secure in Christ at the judgement to come. In his second sermon on the three that bear record in heaven, he explains, quite thoroughly, 1 John 5:7-13. There are three that bear record in heaven, and three that bear witness in earth. And between these “six” there is Scriptural and covenantal agreement concerning the manner of salvation, the assurance that one can have of it. Disciples of Christ, “know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” In his third sermon on rejecting the blessing of God, he explains Hebrews 12:16-17, “Let there be any fornicator, or profane person as Esau...” He is thorough on the Genesis narrative to show why Esau was profane, and how people today may also be profane following Esau’s example. His insightful comments in this sermon are exceedingly valuable and ought to be read with great soul-care. His last sermon is on continuing in sin once a disciple is converted. Romans 6:1-14, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid!” Can disciples sin? Can they sin “big” and still be saved? He takes great pains, and shows a careful step by step explanation on what Paul is teaching throughout the sixth chapter of Romans; a chapter, today, often misunderstood, and overlooked. Gifford is very easy to read, yet, exegetically sound and practically deep. May the Lord bless you as you take time to study along with Gifford on how to lay hold of Jesus Christ for eternal life. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important event of my life occurred during July, 1969, when as an atheist I had an abrupt and totally unexpected encounter with the living God of the universe. Believing, I was thus born again from spiritual death and became by God's grace a 'new creation.' Since then, I have been involved in a number of ministries, traveled much, lived in various countries. My life has been exciting, though not without sadness and tragedy. When I encountered God, I was a cynical, hard-bitten, sarcastic sophist. By His wonderful grace, He has made me (a hopefully productive) member of His kingdom. My consuming interest is to introduce others to the God I know. “For this is eternal life...” Taking Hold Of Eternal Life (1 Timothy 6:12) is what I did after God confronted me on the weekend of my 34th birthday, July 27, 1969. This book tells what led up to that momentous event and then what followed as God in His mercy delivered me from atheism and immediately plunged me into Biblical revelation and ministerial involvement in His kingdom. As the account of my life walking hand-in-hand with Him shows in the pages of this book, God used me in each of the five "callings" listed in Ephesians 4:11. Over the course of forty-five years God has had me involved in numerous churches & various ministries which has resulted in the comments and articles that are also contained in this book. I pray that God uses this book to bless you greatly!
