Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Catherine of Siena's Dialogue describes the entire spiritual life through a series of conversations between God and the soul, represented by Catherine herself. Readers of The Dialogue of Saint Catherine of Siena, will find her revelations from God as informative - and formative - as those who recognized her sanctity during her life. The universally applicable yet intimately personal messages she received from God are as much for us as they were for Catherine. We can read God's communications to his beloved daughter with detached awe or we can receive His messages to us through her writings. Do you long for certainty that Divine Providence exists in the midst of our chaotic world? Does your prayer seem too dry, or too routine? Have you sought guidance for the challenges of your life from unhelpful people or things? Or has pride kept you from humble obedience to the Church? If so, The Dialogue will provide consolation, encouragement, and hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. Andrew Chesnut offers a fascinating portrayal of Santa Muerte, a skeleton saint whose cult has attracted millions of devotees over the past decade. Although condemned by mainstream churches, this folk saint's supernatural powers appeal to millions of Latin Americans and immigrants in the U.S. Devotees believe the Bony Lady (as she is affectionately called) to be the fastest and most effective miracle worker, and as such, her statuettes and paraphernalia now outsell those of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Saint Jude, two other giants of Mexican religiosity. In particular, Chesnut shows Santa Muerte has become the patron saint of drug traffickers, playing an important role as protector of peddlers of crystal meth and marijuana; DEA agents and Mexican police often find her altars in the safe houses of drug smugglers. Yet Saint Death plays other important roles: she is a supernatural healer, love doctor, money-maker, lawyer, and angel of death. She has become without doubt one of the most popular and powerful saints on both the Mexican and American religious landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The horrific 1915 earthquake that leveled tiny Manoppello, Italy, brought forth from the local church’s rubble one of Christendom’s long-lost, but most precious relics: the small cloth that lay on Jesus’s face in the tomb. Saint John speaks of it in his Gospel: “When Peter went into the tomb, he saw linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.” Tradition says that Our Lady herself laid this cloth on His face before He was wrapped in His shroud for burial. This small veil — now known as the Holy Face of Manoppello — absorbed the very first new breath of the Risen Christ . . . and at that same instant had imprinted on itself, miraculously, a vivid image of the now-resurrected Jesus. Modern scholars have confirmed that this image corresponds perfectly in all its measurements to the face of the dead Christ on the more famous Shroud of Turin. Unlike the Shroud, however, the Holy Face of Manoppello shows not the grim visage of a dead man with eyes closed, but the lively face of the living Christ, His eyes wide open, piercing us with their gaze. In 2006, Pope Benedict made a pilgrimage to Manoppello to pray before this image. In the decade since then, tens of thousands of other pilgrims have followed in the Pope’s footsteps, making the trek to central Italy to meet Jesus face-to-face. Now, thanks to author Paul Badde you can learn of the loss and recovery of this precious relic. Better yet, by means of the dozens of color pictures in this book, you, too, can encounter this miraculous cloth, and finally gaze reverently on the face of the living Christ Himself!

Book excerpt: SAINT JUDE: THE STORY THAT'S NEVER BEEN TOLDAt the start of the third millennium after the birth of Christ, a man long dead is alive in the hearts of millions, and this book sets out to unravel what is one of the most intriguing mysteries in Christian history – who is Saint Jude? Jude - Judas Thaddeus – was not the Iscariot, not the traitor. He was a cousin of Jesus Christ and the most obscure of the Twelve Apostles. This is the man they now call the Saint of the Impossible, the Patron of Desperate Cases, the Hope of the Helpless, the Help of the Hopeless, the Saint of Last Resort... Unshakeable belief in Saint Jude Why and how did he gain such a reputation? Why do so many people around the world have an unshakeable belief in him – in his ability to help when hope is gone and despair has set in? In this modern era, he is seen in notices of petition and thanks in newspapers and websites around the world. Web pages are devoted to him and attract many thousands of visitors. All over the world, shrines in his name attract millions. 50 years of Saint Jude research Brian Morgan first heard of Jude's reputation in 1962 and became fascinated. Who was this man? He began research in a dusty old Catholic library in Sydney and this research continued, part-time and in many places, for 50 years. After about 30 years of that work, he lost all his notes in a house move and had to start again. He was determined to look for answers that have intrigued the faithful for two millennia and was drawn into the great, sweeping saga of the birth of Christianity, told through the life of an extraordinary man. A true-to-life story of Saint Jude In the end, he has written the most accurate and true-to-life story he could write of this obscure saint. The Life of Jude is a breath-taking story by a master story-teller. This is a story many believed could never be written. Some said it should not be written. It's a story of faith, a love story, a story of religious zeal. It's a saga drawn over a blood-soaked landscape in extraordinary times. A story of the triumph of hope over despair. But, above all, it begins to answer questions for believers all over the world. No-one has ever been more beloved by the outcasts of the world, the destitute, the sick, the frightened, the lonely, the dying. Many know of Jude; few know about him. The Life of Jude. This is his story. It is as true as a story can be that waited 2000 years to be told. HERE'S WHAT EXPERTS HAVE SAID: A very accomplished, sustained piece of writing. Polished in style and execution, seamlessly telling the story of a man beyond time and place. A captivating journey.Archimede Fusillo, judge of the FAW National Literary award. This book is full of breath-taking highlights. We actually witness the birth of Christianity. Brian Morgan has impressed me with evidence of very thorough research. It is a fascinating topic very well handled. I don't very often get this excited about a work in progress.Brendan Longcore, book editor, reviewing the draft manuscript. I love what you have written. So many cultures, so much research... my God. Many, many people have waited a long time for this story. Jude is so popular all over the world, that your book cannot fail. And it's not just the story... you write so very, very well.Joyce Patterson, reviewer and former editor. This is a very impressive effort. You have written a story never before told in a way that is uniquely yours. I doubt if anyone has assembled this amount of information about Jude. A highly commendable project that deserves a wide readership.Don Purvis, Professor of English Literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of St. Jude Thaddeus, "Helper in Despaired of Cases" Devotional Exercises and Novena Prayers Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is ever new and Vigorous simply because she is what she is, the great Mother of God. Nor will piety towards St. Joseph ever wither away and die being insepar ably connected with the name of Jesus as his foster-father. The name of jude thaddeus, once it is known, should appeal to us for a similar reason, he also being closely allied to Our Blessed Lord by a blood relationship. This singular privilege came to him through St. Anne and St. Joachim, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Being a grand nephew of these two holy souls he is at once a nephew of Joseph and Mary which of course places him in the relationship of cousin to Our Lord Himself. Proximity to Christ is always a valuable asset, yea even an indis pensable one, to a saint, but when it is the nearness of actual relationship to the Saviour of mankind, it becomes apowerful incentive in making man try all the more to endear himself to that saint. St. Jude thaddeus owed his incep tion into the world to Cleophas and Mary of Cleophas, his parents. His mother, Mary of Cleophas, brought him up in a youthhood of piety and innocence, both of which were fostered and augmented by the ever outstanding example of Christ. This example was vouchsafed him even in his boyhood years, for as cousin of the Saviour he must have frequently been in an intimate association with the Saviour of the world. What events made up the life of jude thaddeus up to the time of the call to apostleship are not known, but this much 13 certain, when the divine invitation was extended he not only embraced it, but never for a moment allowed his zeal to abate as an apostle. It was zeal and zeal alone which eventually brought to him the much coveted prize of martyrdom. He was not only an Apostle, but also one of the sacred writers. His work is known as The Epistle of st. Jude. Although only a very brief work of twenty verses, the shortest writing of the New Testament, it is remarkable for the strength and grandeur of its language. Most of its contents are wonderfully well adapted to the time in which we live, for, the heresies and immoralities of the Simonians and the Gnostics are with us even today. It was against these that st. Jude T haddeus directed his writ ings. It seems also that be'was one of the last of the twelve Apostles to die. He infers this when he writes be mind ful of the words which have been spoken before by the Apostles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.

Even as politicians call for a "Cancer Moonshot," this accomplishment remains a pinnacle in cancer research. The author’s daughter, then a medical student at Georgetown Medical School, told her father about this amazing success story. Tim Wendel soon discovered that many of the doctors at the forefront of this effort cared for his brother at Roswell Park in Buffalo, New York. Wendel went in search of this extraordinary group, interviewing Lucius Sinks, James Holland, Donald Pinkel, and others in the field. If there were a Mount Rushmore for cancer research, they would be on it. Despite being ostracized by their medical peers, these doctors developed modern-day chemotherapy practices and invented the blood centrifuge machine, helping thousands of children live longer lives. Part family memoir and part medical narrative, Cancer Crossings explores how the Wendel family found the courage to move ahead with their lives. They learned to sail on Lake Ontario, cruising across miles of open water together, even as the campaign against cancer changed their lives forever.
