Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons From the Life of Benjamin Franklin: 1706-1790 While thinking last summer how I might use fully employ some leisure hours, it occurred to me to prepare the following compilation for the benefit of the young people of Buffalo, having in View especially those who have lately graduated, or who are about to graduate from our public and other schools. It may also be interesting and not un profitable reading to older persons who are not familiar with the details of Benjamin Franklin's business career. It is for the most part an abridgment, consisting of those portions of Franklin's autobiography which may be useful for instruction and example in the conduct of business and life, and excluding many genealogical and other details and various episodes which are comparatively uninteresting, are not within the purpose of the volume, and would enhance its cost. 'these considerations afford, I think, a sufficient answer to the objections usually and sometimes properly made to abridgments. In this fascinating account of the life of one of America's greatest statesmen, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin describes this Founding Father's rise from his humble beginnings in Philadelphia to his role at the centre of international politics. A famous polymath and inventor, Franklin was a major force in the American Enlightenment of the late 18th century. His learned contemplations on religion, philosophy, virtue, and society are as relevant today as they were during his own time.

It has become one of the most well-known and influential autobiographies in history, and has been praised both as a historical document and a piece of literature in its own right. William Dean Howells declared that "Franklin's is one of the greatest autobiographies in literature, and towers over other autobiographies as Franklin towered over other men."

Book excerpt: Between 1771 and 1790, American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin sat down to record the important events of his life, from his childhood in Boston to his work as a printer in Philadelphia, to his trips to Paris and his plans for the first public library. The story of the invention of the Franklin stove, the first Poor Richard's Almanac, and his experiments with electricity are all included here. His "Project for Moral Perfection"—a list of desirable virtues and steps to achieve them—influenced the modern self-help genre. Hundreds of years later, Franklin's account of his rise from middle-class obscurity to become a world-renowned scholar and civic figure continues to promote the American Dream. First published in 1791, this unabridged version of Franklin's autobiography is taken from the 1909 copyright edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin, Self-Revealed is a biographical and critical study on Benjamin Franklin's life and work mostly based on Franklin's own writings. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was an American polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Franklin was a leading writer, printer, political philosopher, politician, Freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among other inventions. Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity, initially as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies. As the first United States ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. Contents: Franklin's Moral Standing and System Franklin's Religious Beliefs Franklin, the Philanthropist and Citizen Franklin's Family Relations Franklin's American Friends Franklin's British Friends Franklin's French Friends Franklin's Personal Characteristics Franklin as a Man of Business Franklin as a Statesman Franklin as a Man of Science Franklin as a Writer
