The tide flows and ebbs and the restless waves incessantly roll on the beach without arousing a thought as to the nature and cause of their movements. The beach itself teems with peculiar forms of life that are scarcely noticed except when they disturb the peace of the resting visitor. The charming vegetation of the tranquil rock-pool receives but a passing glance, and the little world of busy creatures that people it are scarcely observed; while the wonderful forms of life that inhabit the sheltered nooks of the rugged rocks between the tide-marks are almost entirely unknown except to the comparatively few students of Nature. So general is this apparent lack of interest in the things of the shore that he who delights in the study of littoral life and scenes but seldom meets with a kindred spirit while following his pursuits, even though the crowded beach of a popular resort be situated in the immediate neighbourhood of his hunting ground. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Sea The history of every science affords examples of the enormous stimulus to further research which arises from the discovery of some new and sound method of research; and two such advances in methods have transformed marine biology during the last ten years. Late in the eighties of last century some German physiologists began to estimate the quantity of microscopic life contained in the sea under each square metre of surface, and nets and other apparatus were invented for this purpose. About the beginning of the nineties some Scandinavian geographers and zoologists also began to investigate the microscopic life of the sea with respect to the physical conditions of the water. The object of the Kiel quantitative plankton investigations was to estimate the production of a sea area in much the same way as a scientific agriculturalist attempts to estimate the productivity of a cultivated land area; and that of the Scandinavian hydrographers was to attempt to forecast seasonal changes in the climatic conditions of their countries by studying the currents of the sea.
