Book excerpt: Life in the Clearings versus the Bush by Susanna Moodie In our work of "Roughing it in the Bush," I endeavoured to draw a picture of Canadian life, as I found it twenty years ago, in the Backwoods. My motive in giving such a melancholy narrative to the British public, was prompted by the hope of deterring well-educated people, about to settle in this colony, from entering upon a life for which they were totally unfitted by their previous pursuits and habits. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: If you've read Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace, the historical fiction novel that describes a gruesome double murder in Canada in 1843, you would be interested to know the sources that were used by Atwood during her research. Life in the Clearings by Susanna Moodie was one such reference book in which the author, Susanna Moodie recounts her meeting with the infamous murderess Grace Marks, a young house help who was convicted to life imprisonment for her role in the slaying of her employers. Susanna Moodie was an Englishwoman born in Suffolk. Her two sisters were also writers. She wrote and published her first book of children's stories before she was twenty. Later, Moodie transcribed the narrative of a former Caribbean slave, Mary Price, as part of her involvement in the Anti-Slavery Society. She married a former military man who had served in the Napoleonic Wars and migrated to Canada in 1832. She continued to write about her life in the newly formed colonies there and today, these books are invaluable pieces of history that document a pioneering way of life. The customs, climate, wildlife and landscape as well as the social happenings of Upper Canada are brilliantly recorded in a series of journals, letters and biographical sketches that Moodie wrote to keep herself occupied and also to supplement the family income. Born into a relatively wealthy upper middle class English family, Moodie herself found life in the colony dull and hard and she did not find life in the "bush" as she called it, particularly enjoyable. When she and her family moved to a small town, Belleville, in Southeastern Ontario, this was much more to her liking. She called Belleville the "clearings." Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush to give the book's complete title is a sequel to an earlier volume that she titled Roughing it in The Bush which dealt with her struggle to maintain life on a remote Canadian farm. Roughing it in the Bush was an immediate success and became a ready reckoner for potential emigrants from Britain who were thinking of migrating to Canada. She meant it to be a frank and unromantic view of the tough life that new emigrants born in comfortable surroundings like herself would have to face in the new country. Life in the Clearings also served as inspiration for Margaret Atwood's 1970 collection of poems entitled The Journals of Susanna Moodie. In 2003 Moodie was honored by the government of Canada with a commemorative postage stamp. Life in the Clearings is indeed a remarkable document of a way of life that is now long gone...

Book excerpt: Written as a continuation of her sensational 1852 text, Roughing it in the Bush, Susanna Moodie’s Life in the Backwoods continues the narrative of her experience as a settler in mid-nineteenth century Upper Canada. By relating her own experiences and those of the community of pioneers also living in the harsh environment of the Canadian backwoods, Moodie creates a faithful portrait of the harsh life faced by settlers to the British Colony. Written primarily for British readers, Life in the Backwoods—together with Roughing it in the Bush—acted as a guide for newcomers to Canada on how to live and survive in the uncultivated wilds of Canada. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughing it in the Bush is the autobiography of Susanna Moodie who left England hoping to find a better life in the wilds of Canada. The infection became general. A Canada mania pervaded the middle ranks of British society; thousands and tens of thousands for the space of three or four years landed upon these shores. A large majority of the higher class were officers of the army and navy, with their families--a class perfectly unfitted by their previous habits and education for contending with the stern realities of emigrant life.Roughing It in the Bush was part of a trilogy Moodie wrote to chronicle the immigrant experience in Canada. The other works that complete the trilogy are Flora Lyndsay (1854), a prequel that describes the initial preparations for immigration, and an exploration of Canadian towns and institutions in Life in the Clearings (1853). Moodie's publishing background in Canada consisted of short contributions to periodicals. She contributed to The Literary Garland of Montreal beginning in late 1838. She was one of the principal contributors over the next 12 years, publishing "serialized novels based on English life, several of them expansions of earlier short work, poems on Old World and Canadian subjects, and most important, a series of six "Canadian Sketches" that formed the nucleus of Roughing It in the Bush."[3]Moodie's account of the hardships of settler life contrasted sharply against the image conjured by the British advertisers. Moodie's tone is frank, and her style is vividly descriptive:The conduct of many of the settlers, who considered themselves gentlemen, and would have been very much affronted to have been called otherwise, was often more reprehensible than that of the poor Irish emigrants, to whom they should have set an example of order and sobriety. The behaviour of these young men drew upon them the severe but just censures of the poorer class, whom they regarded in every way as their inferiors."That blackguard calls himself a gentleman. In what respect is he better than us?" was an observation too frequently made use of at these gatherings. To see a bad man in the very worst point of view, follow him to a bee: be he profane, licentious, quarrelsome, or a rogue, all his native wickedness will be fully developed there. (Chapter 7, Our Logging Bee)Disorientation in a new environment, the dirty and exhausting physical demands of land-clearing and house raising, and the gossip and friction amongst the new settlers are explored in detail. Moodie added touches of humour, but there is an underlying irony to such passages, emphasizing the disconnect between immigrant illusions and Canadian realities. Moodie's treatment of the settler experience differed from the works published by her sister, Catharine Parr Traill. The Backwoods of Canada (1836), by Traill, presents a more "pragmatic and optimistic" account, stressing the "scientific" and the "factual" examination of settlement realities.
