Book excerpt: An elderly Chinese immigrant, hospitalized with terminal disease, requests to burn incense. A 30-year-old Roman Catholic gay male, dying of AIDS, is consumed by deepening moral guilt, troubled by beliefs he thought he abandoned years ago. A mother whose teenage son died of an aneurism is angry at God over his death yet fearful of expressing that anger lest He 'punish her again.' A young widower seemingly has difficulty expressing grief believing it to be a sign of weak faith. All of these examples illustrate the kinds of issues that clinicians and counselors constantly encounter. For although North American society has long been characterized as secular, this does not deny the potency of spiritual concerns and religious values on the individual level. Polls affirm that vast majorities of North Americans both believe in God and consider religion important in their lives. This is clearly evident when one faces the crisis of dying or bereavement. For, one of the strengths of belief is that it provides support and succor at a time when secular explanations are largely silent. For these reasons, educators and clinicians have long recognized the significance that religious and spiritual themes have in counseling with the dying and bereaved. Yet, in cultures as religiously diverse as the U.S. and Canada, caregivers and educators may feel inadequate to the task. Death and Spirituality addresses this need. Specifically it seeks to reach two, perhaps overlapping, audiences. First, it considers the needs death-related counselors and educators, seeking to provide them with both a sense of the norm of religious tradition and the religious and spiritual issues that might arise in illness and bereavement, as well as suitable interventions, approaches, and resources that might be useful in assisting clients in examining and resolving such issues. The book also speaks to the complementary needs of clergy who also may wish to assist parishioners and others as they face the spiritual and psychological crisis of dying and grief.

Book excerpt: This volume looks in detail at the life-after-death doctrines of seven world religions and asks many questions such as: are there important parallels between the many accounts of near-death experiences, and what happens to us when we actually die?; is there a part of us that conquers death?; If so, will that entity have a personal or universal encounter with it's creator at some point? The author draws out many corresponding features in reported near-death experiences, and demonstrates the unity of all religions in their approach to death and the afterlife.

Book excerpt: The primal role of art in awakening and liberating the soul of humanity • Presents a seven-stage journey of transformation moving from the darkened soul to the light of spiritual illumination • Provides a meditation practice to experience the spiritual energy embedded within art • Includes artists Alex Grey, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Walter Gaudnek, and others Art and Spiritual Transformation presents a seven-stage journey from the darkened soul to the light of spiritual illumination that is possible through the world of art. Finley Eversole introduces a meditation practice that moves beyond the visual content of an art form in order to connect with its embedded spiritual energy, allowing the viewer to tap in to the deeper consciousness inherent in the artwork and awaken dormant powers in the depths of the viewer’s soul. Examining modern and postmodern artwork from 1945 onward, Eversole reveals the influences of ancient Egypt, India, China, and alchemy on this art. He draws extensively on philosophy, myth and symbolism, literature, and metaphysics to explain the seven stages of spiritual death and rebirth of the soul possible through art: the experience of self-loss, the journey into the underworld, the experience of the dark night of the soul, the conflict with and triumph over evil, the awakening of new life in the depths of being, and the return and reintegration of consciousness on a higher plane of being, resulting finally in ecstasy, transfiguration, illumination, and liberation. To illustrate these stages, Eversole includes works by abstract expressionists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko and modern visionary artists Alex Grey and Ernst Fuchs, among others, to reveal the powerful and liberating forces art contributes to the transformation and evolution of human consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the greatest human disappointment is that we all die. This book deals with problems of living and acceptance of death. It provides knowledge and skill resources needed to come to terms with both life and death. Many people react by denying, pretending or minimizing. They may harbor a fantasy that we all live in a world everlasting and that we, too, are everlasting. Once born, we have a 100% chance of dying. The only question is when. The institutional answer to our disappointment is organized religion, prayer, theology, reassurance, and externalizing the problem of death to a distant, idealized and personal God. Deep down inside, we all know the truth. This book is based on a simple notion: we can all learn to cope with the issues of living in a natural world in which we die. Although narrower in scope, this book is in the tradition of the large questions which are always relevant to human-kind. For example, the meaning of life, how to live a life, what is truth, where truth and justice lie. This book takes a substantial departure from the supernatural world offered by many world religious traditions and the personal and institutionalized denial supported by prayer to an external personal God. An analysis of the problem is provided together with a path toward a personal solution. The path requires the seeker to do both intellectual and emotional work. We need to understand the problem that is smothering us and we need to equip ourselves for action. The strategies offered for making needed changes include: skepticism, problem analysis, knowledge and understanding, skill development, confronting the realities of the natural world and coming to terms with who we are as people. In addition to conceptual approaches, there are practical remedies incorporated in a methods section. These include; personal growth, refuting obsolete beliefs, relaxation skills and meditation skills. The connection between deep muscle relaxation, meditation and avenues of personal and psychological change are developed. The reader is invited to become a new person of their own making. The book provides only the opportunity and the means. Readers will need to deliver the motivation, the sustained energy, and the tenacity to make the life changes they wish to achieve. At its core, this is a self-help book written by a psychologist. However, the emphasis here is more fundamental than learning behavioral self-regulation or being a fully functioning person. The focus is on coping with the problems of life and death. More than getting our affairs in order, we need to come to terms with ourselves. In order to do so, we need to cultivate the grit to face up to the many challenging questions before us. Issues like anxiety, mood, communication skills and behavioral tune-up remain highly relevant, but there are much larger issues. The book offers a path to both good living and good dying.

This is an important book because only by facing death will we come to a deeper realization of who we are.” —Eckhart Tolle, author of A New Earth and The Power of Now “If I had any doubts about the afterlife, I don’t have them anymore. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the great stripping process of aging, dying and spiritual awakening. Beautiful, poignant, at times humorous, transcendent, messy, down to earth, refreshingly honest--the book explores death, and more importantly, being alive, through a rich mix of personal stories and spiritual reflections. Joan writes about her mother's final years and about being with friends and teachers at the end of their lives. She shares her own journey with aging, anal cancer, and other life challenges. She explores what it means to be alive in what may be the collapse of civilization and the possible extinction of life on earth due to climate change. Pointing beyond deficiency stories, future fantasies, and oppressive self-improvement projects, Joan invites an awakening to the immediacy of this moment and the wonder of ordinary life. She demonstrates a pathless path of genuine transformation, seeing all of life as sacred and worthy of devotion, and finding joy in the full range of our human experience.

Book excerpt: By relating one man’s amazing tale of triumph over death on multiple occasions, this book brings a fresh perspective to near death experience literature. David Bennett, once a brash young commercial diver whose personal philosophy was “cut your way through life to survive,” was caught in a violent storm off the California coast one night where he drowned. While technically “dead,” he met beings of light, relived his life, and peeked into his future, resulting in a complete paradigm shift for him. Later, he discovered he had stage IV lung and bone cancer—so advanced that his spine collapsed. Miraculously, he survived once again, and this second close call taught him even more about living, loving, and how to find purpose in his life. Voyage of Purpose brings readers right into the heart of the near-death experience, including the sensations of dying, being surrounded by the light, and meeting the Soul Family. Part memoir and part guide for achieving spiritual growth, this book shows how to integrate the most traumatic of incidents into one’s spiritual path in order to live a more meaningful life.

Book excerpt: Plan your most rewarding and enjoyable spiritual journey through life, death and the after-life. Using The Circle of Life and Death, as your introductory guidebook, you will explore the many universal truths that are at the core of all life, death and after-life religious and esoteric teachings. These spiritual truths revealed by Karrasch, in understandable and comprehensive language, represents a forty-three year spiritual quest by the author. Here are just a few of the spiritual truths that the author has found to be constant, that are included in The Circle of Life and Death, to assist you on this journey. It is love in one form or another that is the binding attraction that propels creation forward in the progression of the soul through life and death. Life and death should be viewed not as two separate experiences but as one continuous progression repeated over and over. The continuation of the consciousness of our soul is assured as we progress through each lifetime and death. Our purpose in each life is to gain experiences that will awaken us to a higher consciousness, the spark of God within us. This is the driving force that propels each individual soul through the cycle of reincarnation. Heaven and Hell are not physical or geographical places, but states of consciousness needed to analyze and evaluate past earthly experiences in the after-life. They are not permanent conditions. Karrasch hopes each individual will be guided to find his or her own spiritual path with the assistance of the concepts and practical strategies presented in this fascinating introductory guide- book. You do not need to abandon all your religious beliefs to embark on this life-changing journey while you keep God as your "constant companion".
