Book Synopsis Historicizing Lifestyle by : David Bell
Download or read book Historicizing Lifestyle written by David Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifestyles have a history, and lifestyle media is fundamentally implicated in this history. This original volume examines issues of taste, media and lifestyle from the 1900s to 1970s, providing a wealth of empirical evidence and debate from varied international perspectives. Including examples as diverse as 'Good Housekeeping' and 'Playboy', it explores the continuities and discontinuities between the past and present to provide a better understanding of the representation of lifestyle and its relationship to the self. The volume demonstrates how ideas about gender, nation and 'race' problematize taken-for-granted assumptions about lifestyle, with particular emphasis on the new middle classes in the US. The book also examines the role of advertising and marketing in mediating ideas about lifestyle, the role of material culture in the construction of cultural hierarchies and the positioning of social groups within wider cartographies of taste. The volume makes a significant contribution to this growing field and will interest academics and students in media and cultural studies, communication studies, cultural history and sociology.

Download or read book Wisdom written by George D. Johnson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history philosophers have sought to understand the nature of wisdom and how to achieve it, but Reverend George Johnsons Wisdom explains that true wisdom comes from above and is a necessity for daily living. For centuries, many people grew up in homes defi ned by tradition and wisdom while others grew up in homes defi ned by whim and lack of knowledge. Wisdom informs us that a wise person seeks understanding and knowledge, and anyone can receive it if he or she seeks it. Wisdom gives voice to the voiceless, help to the helpless, and hope to the hopeless. With this said, Johnsons own wisdom has directed him to construct Wisdom using an unconventional pattern, where readers do not necessarily have to read prior chapters in order to understand future chapters. Wisdoms inspiring words captivate readers as each chapter tells a story, tells us what to do, and tells us what not to do. Wisdom touches on every aspect of life from individuals getting rid of baggage that so easily weighs us down to learning how to enjoy life by smelling the roses. To this end, Wisdom is an inspirational manuscript full of voices of wisdom and ethics for everyday living.

Book Synopsis Aquinas on the Beginning and End of Human Life by : Fabrizio Amerini
Download or read book Aquinas on the Beginning and End of Human Life written by Fabrizio Amerini and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary discussions of abortion, both sides argue well-worn positions, particularly concerning the question, When does human life begin? Though often invoked by the Catholic Church for support, Thomas Aquinas in fact held that human life begins after conception, not at the moment of union. But his overall thinking on questions of how humans come into being, and cease to be, is more subtle than either side in this polarized debate imagines. Fabrizio Amerini—an internationally-renowned scholar of medieval philosophy—does justice to Aquinas’ views on these controversial issues. Some pro-life proponents hold that Aquinas’ position is simply due to faulty biological knowledge, and if he knew what we know today about embryology, he would agree that human life begins at conception. Others argue that nothing Aquinas could learn from modern biology would have changed his mind. Amerini follows the twists and turns of Aquinas’ thinking to reach a nuanced and detailed solution in the final chapters that will unsettle familiar assumptions and arguments. Systematically examining all the pertinent texts and placing each in historical context, Amerini provides an accurate reconstruction of Aquinas’ account of the beginning and end of human life and assesses its bioethical implications for today. This major contribution is available to an English-speaking audience through translation by Mark Henninger, himself a noted scholar of medieval philosophy.
