Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, and the Voyages and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus I found also the Royal Library of Madrid, and the library of the Jesuits' College of San Isidro, two noble and extensive collections, open to access, and conducted with great order and Iiberality. From Don Martin Fernandez de Navarrete, who communicated various valuable and curious pieces of information, discovered in the course of his researches, I received the most oblig ing assistance; nor can I refrain from testifying my admiration of the self-sustained zeal of that estimable man, one of the last. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 3: And the Voyages and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus Still imagining the coast of Paria to be an island, and anxious to circumnavigate it and arrive at the place where these pearls were said by the Indians to abound, Columbus left The Gardens on the roth of August and continued coasting westward within the gulf in search of an outlet to the north. He observed por tions of Terra Firma appearing towards the bottom of the gulf, which he supposed to be islands, and called them Isabella and Tramon tana, and fancied that the desired outlet to the sea must lie between them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1 On considering the matter more maturely, I perceived that, although there were many books, in various lan guages, relative to Columbus, they all contained limited and incomplete accounts of his life and voyages; while numerous valuable tracts on the subject existed only in manuscript or in the form of letters, journals, and public muniments. It appeared to me that a history, faithfully digested from these various materials, was a desideratum in literature, and would be a more satisfactory occupation to myself, and a more acceptable work to my country, than the translation I had contemplated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1: To Which Are Added Those of His Companions Being at Bordeaux, in the winter of 1825-6, I received a letter from my friend Mr. Alexander Everett, Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States at Madrid, inviting me to visit that capital, and informing me, as an inducement to do so at an early period, that there was a work then in the press, edited by Don Martin Fernandez de Navarrete, Secretary of the Royal Academy of History, &c. &c. containing a collection of documents relative to the voyages of Columbus, among which were many of a highly important nature, recently discovered. Mr. Everett expressed an opinion that a version of the work into English, by one of our country, would be peculiarly desirable, and thought that it might furnish me with an interesting and agreeable occupation during my sojourn in the Spanish capital. I concurred with him in the opinion, and having for some time contemplated a visit to Madrid, I shortly after set off for that capital, with an idea of undertaking, while there, the translation of the work. Soon after my arrival, the publication of Mr. Navarrete made its appearance. I found it to contain many documents hitherto unknown, which threw additional lights on the discovery of the new world, and which reflected great credit on the researches of the learned editor. Still the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself. There were precious tracts for the mere man of research, but the sight of disjointed papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and connected narrative. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Life, Vol. 2 of 4: And Voyages of Christopher Columbus The departure of Columbus on his second voyage of discovery, presented a brilliant contrast to his gloomy embarkation of Palos. On the 25th of September, at the dawn of day, the bay of Cadiz was whitened by his fleet. There were three large ships of heavy burden, and fourteen caravels, loitering with flapping sails, and awaiting the signal to get under weigh. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Christopher Columbus A series of volumes, upon the Pioneers and Patriots of America, would certainly be defective if they did not contain an account of the adventures of Christopher Columbus, the most illustrious of all the pioneers of the New World. Columbus had his enemies. He has been vehemently assailed. The writer has endeavored to give a perfectly correct account of his character and career, and has been careful to present to the reader his authority for every important statement. Many may think that the assaults upon his character do not deserve so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery and Conquest of the New World: Containing the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus Entering upon what would naturally be supposed a most arduous undertaking, the preparation of this Introduction, I became aware of the fact that the magnitude of the subjects, the exalted, unquestioned posi tion of Washington Irving, which had seemed to present insurmountable difficulties, actually facilitated the accomplishment of the object of my efforts. A very pigmy may introduce a giant - the faintest streak of light in the east is sufficient to herald the coming of the orb of day. The untutored wandering Arab of the Desert, the unlettered mariner of the deep, can with unfailing accuracy point out the grand constellations of the heavens. The existence of vast superiority in any of the creations of God, obviates the necessity of introduction; the natural appreciation in mankind of that towering above or surpassing all surrounding objects of like kind makes introduction supererogatory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 3: To Which Are Added Those of His Companions The extraordinary actions and adventures of these men, while they rival the exploits recorded in chival ric romance, have the additional interest of verity. They leave us in admiration of the bold and heroic qualities inherent in the Spanish character, which led that nation to so high a pitch of power and glory; and which are still discernible in the great mass of that gallant people, by those who have an opportunity of judging of them rightly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 2: To Which Are Added Those of His Companions Las Casas expresses a doubt whether Bartholomew wrote this note for himself, or on the part of his brother, but infers that one, or both, were in this expedition. The inference may be correct ith respect to Bartholomew, but Christopher, at the time specified, was at the Spanish court. Las Casas accounts for a difference in date between the foregoing memorandum and the chronicles of the voyage; the former making the return of Diaz in the vear '88, the latter '87. This he observes might be because some begun to count the year after Christmas, others at the first of January: and the expedition sailed about the end of August '86, and returned in December '87, after an absence of seventeen months.
