English work [in contrast to the German] of the last twenty years has been neutral or defensive. I fully believe that this period not only is coming. But has come to an end. There is evidence around us on man sides that a new spirit is abroad. When a German scholar sets 'mseli a particular thesis, his first step is to get to know. As nearly as he can, all that has been written about it. In this way every step is based upon previous steps. And the continuity of research is never broken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Life OF jesus and christianity. - But history does not stand alone in being unable to refuse the task of giving a scientific account Of the life of Jesus. The execution of the work is imperatively demanded by the Christian religion itself. The great interest which the person Of Jesus, his public ministry, and his fate, possess for Christianity is as clearly as possible shown by this fact, that of all its sacred writings, the four Gospels are unquestionably the best known and the most popular throughout the whole Christian world.1 The early Christian community might have rested satisfied with these four written Sources. It read in them how the life of Jesus was passed and from the fact that the Church handed down these writings from generation to generation as her sacred treasure, it might be regarded as an act of piety to believe in them in the smallest matters as well as in those of great importance without further question. But such an attitude can no longer be taken at the present day, and for these reasons. On the one hand, scholars have diligently applied themselves to the study of the Biblical writings, and more especially the Gospels. On the other hand, we know also, at least with approximate exactness, how it was that the New Testament arose. Thus it is now an established fact that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Teachings of Jesus I The sources for the study of the life of Jesus are found in the books Of the New Testa ment, especially the four Gospels. These books were not written immediately after the close Of Jesus' earthly ministry, but as occa sion demanded during the second half of the first century. The story of our Savior's life was familiar to his disciples, and was passed on from group to group as the churches grew. Later on, as the need of writings was felt, parts Of this narrative were written down, and have come to us in the various books of the New Testament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ: In Its Historical Connexion and Historical Development The present age may be considered an epoch of transition in the development of the kingdom of God; and, as such, it is full of signs. Among the most striking of them is a greater zeal for the spread of the Gospel and the Bible through all nations, combining many and various agencies for that work; as well as a closer union among all earnest Christians, seekers of salvation and truth, of all lands, however widely separated-a new Catholic Church, which, amid all the diversity of outward ecclesiastica! forms, is preparing that unity of the spirit which has Christ for its foundation. Especially is it matter of rejoicing to see a growing spirit of fraternal union between the Christians of the Old World and those of the New; a land in which Christianity (the destined leaven for all the elements of humanity, how various soever) develops its activities under secular relations so entirely novel. It was, therefore, very gratifying to me to learn that Professors M'Clintock and Blumenthal had determined to put this volume, the fruit of my earnest inquiries, before the transatlantic Christian public in an English dress. To sec a wider sphere of influence opened for views which we ourselves (amid manifold struggles, yet guided, we trust, bv the Divine Spirit) have recognized as true, and which, in our opinion, are lilted to make a way right on through the warring contradictions of error, cannot be otherwise than grateful to us. For truth is designed for all men: he who serves the truth works and strives for all men. The Lord has given to each his own charisma, and with it each must work for all. What is true and good, then, is no man's own; it comes from the Father of Lights, the Giver of every good gift, who lends it to us to he used for all. And what is true, must prove itself such by bearing the test of the general Christian consciousness. But the pleasure with which I write these words is not unmingled with anxiety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ The miracles of this period are comparatively few. This only means that few are recorded, the Evangelists being occupied in relating the incidents which are more peculiar to the time of which they are speaking. It cannot be doubted that, wherever our Lord went in the course of His preaching, He marked His way by these prodigies of charity and compassion. This 18 obvious, when we consider that, by a kind of accident - though nothing in the arrangement of the Gospels is really accidental - we have in the last chapters of this volume the history of a few successive hours, and these are full of miracles of the first class, - the stilling of the storm on the Lake, the casting out of the legion of devils, the cure of the woman with an issue of blood, the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus, followed by the cure of two blind men, and the casting out of the devil from one who was also dumb. All these things happened within a period of twenty-four hours, of which we have the complete account in the Gospels. And these were miracles, in many cases, worked almost against our Lord's will, that is, which were to some extent forced upon Him by the circumstances of the time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Jesus The twelve earlier editions Of this work differ from one an other only in trifling changes. The present edition, on the contrary, has been revised and corrected with the greatest care. During the four years since the book appeared, I have laboured incessantly to improve it. The numerous criticisms to which it has given rise have rendered the task in certain respects an easy one. I have read all those which contain anything important. I believe I can conscientiously affirm that not once have the outrage and the calumny which have been imported into them hindered me from deriving profit from the just Observations which those criticisms might contain. I have weighed everything, tested everything. If in certain cases people should wonder why I have not answered fully the censures which have been made with such extreme assurance, and as if the errors alleged had been proved, it is not that I did not know of these censures, but that it was impossible for me to accept them. In such cases I have gen erally added in a note the texts or the considerations which have kept me from changing my opinion, or else by some slight change Of expression I have endeavoured to show wherein lay the error of my critics. These notes, though very brief and doing little more than point out the original sources, are still enough to Show the intelligent reader the rea sonings that have guided me in the composition of my text. TO answer in detail all the charges that have been brought against me, it would have been necessary for me to triple or quadruple this volume. I Should have had to repeat thingswhich have already been well said, even in French. I must have gone into religions controversy, - a thing that I abso lutely forbid myself to do. I should have had to speak Of myself, a thing I never do. I write in order to put my ideas before those who seek the truth. As for those persons who in the interest of their belief must have it that I am an ignora mus, a lying spirit, or a man of bad faith, I make no attempt to modify their opinion. If that opinion is necessary for the peace of mind of certain pious people, I should feel a genuine scraple at disabusing them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 1 Dost thou recall, from the bosom of God where thou reposest, those long days at Ghazir, in which, alone with thee, I wrote these pages, inspired by the places we had visited together? Silent at my side, thou didst read and copy each sheet as soon as I had written it, whilst the sea, the villages, the ravines, and the mountains, were spread at our feet. When the overwhelming light had given place to the innumerable army of stars, thy shrewd and subtle questions, thy discreet doubts, led me back to the sublime object of our common thoughts. One day thou didst tell me that thou wouldst love this book - first, because it had been composed with thee, and also because it pleased thee. Though at times thou didst fear for it the narrow judgments of the frivolous, yet wert thou ever persuaded that all truly religious souls would ultimately take pleasure in it. In the midst of these sweet meditations, the Angel of Death struck us both with his wing: the sleep of fever seized us at the same time - I awoke alone!... Thou sleepest now in the land of Adonis, near the holy Byblus and the sacred stream where the women of the ancient mysteries came to mingle their tears. Reveal to me, O good genius, to me whom thou lovedst, those truths which conquer death, deprive it of terror, and make it almost beloved. More than that, my aim is not to repeat the little that we know about the youth of Jesus; it is to seek for that which has not been told us. The early Christians, surprised at the sobriety of the gospel narratives, tried to make up for the silence of history, and composed the apocryphal Gospels of the Infancy. I am attempting a study of this sort, but I have no intention of writing a work of pure imagination, like that of the authors of the antique legends. I would fain say what must have been the life of Jesus until his thirtieth year, by deducing from known facts some facts unknown.
