Smyth These Memoirs originated in the action of the Delaware State Historical Society, which in the year 1866, actuated by a laudable State pride in the reputation of its patriot dead, and by a desire to preserve in its archives the records of such fallen heroes, by resolu tion, invited the author to prepare an essay upon The Life and Military Services of Brigadier General thomas A. Smyth, to be read at a future meeting of the Society. In addition to this stimulus to engage in the labor, there was another one in the fact that the friends of Gen. Smyth generally de sired, in a more connected and compact form than editorial comments, letters of newspaper correspondents, general orders, congratulatory ad dresses, press dispatches and written military reports could shape, some narrative of his life; a kind of aggregation of many of the favorable notices and acknowledgements of military services rendered, he had received from both commanders and troops. The task was a labor of love, and was accepted, if not with confidence, at least with the will and intent to chronicle as faithfully as possible With the means at command, the career of the gallant soldier, and to represent him as he appeared in the estimation of those who knew him best in that field in which he so signally distinguished himself. Download or read book Appomattox written by Michael E. Haskew and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They endured hardship and deprivation as they fought for their home and ideals - relive the final days of the Army of Northern Virginia. Appomattox: The Last Days of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia encompasses the defense and evacuation of the Confederate capital of Richmond, the horrific combat in the trenches of Petersburg, General Robert E. Lee's withdrawal toward the Carolinas in his forlorn hope of a rendezvous with General Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee to carry on the fight, the relentless pursuit of Union forces, and the ultimate realization that further resistance against overwhelming odds was futile. The Army of Northern Virginia was the fighting soul of the Confederacy in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War. From its inception, it fought against overwhelming odds. Union forces might have occupied territory, but as long as the Confederate army was active in the field, the rebellion was alive. Through four years of bitter conflict, the Army of Northern Virginia and its longtime commander, General Robert E. Lee, became the stuff of legend. By April 1865, its days were numbered. There are many stories of heroism and sacrifice, both Union and Confederate, during the Civil War, and Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia wrote their own epic chapter. Author Michael E. Haskew, a researcher, writer, and editor of many military history subjects for over twenty years, puts the hardship and deprivation suffered by this Army's soldiers while defending their home and ideals into proper perspective.

Book Synopsis Army of the Potomac by : Russel H. Beatie
Download or read book Army of the Potomac written by Russel H. Beatie and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2007-05-14 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of this masterful Civil War history series covers the pivotal early months of General George McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign. As he did in his first two volumes of this magisterial series, Russel Beatie tells the story largely through the eyes and from the perspective of high-ranking officers, staff officers, and politicians. This study is based upon extensive firsthand research (including many previously unused and unpublished sources) that rewrites the history of Little Mac’s inaugural effort to push his way up the peninsula and capture Richmond in one bold campaign. In meticulous fashion, Beatie examines many heretofore unknown, ignored, or misunderstood facts and events and uses them to evaluate the campaign in the most balanced historical context to date. Every aspect of these critically important weeks is examined, from how McClellan’s Urbanna plan unraveled and led to the birth of the expedition that debarked at Fort Monroe in March 1862, to the aftermath of Williamsburg. To capture the full flavor of their experiences, Beatie employs the “fog of war” technique, which puts the reader in the position of the men who led the Union army. The Confederate adversaries are always present but often only in shadowy forms that achieve firm reality only when we meet them face-to-face on the battlefield. Well written, judiciously reasoned, and extensively footnoted, McClellan’s First Campaign will be heralded as the seminal work on this topic. Civil War readers may not always agree with Beatie’s conclusions, but they will concur that his account offers an original examination of the Army of the Potomac’s role on the Virginia peninsula. “If you want to understand the war in the east, this series is essential.” —Civil War Books and Authors
