Book excerpt: Dans le chapitre 1, nous utilisons le schéma d'analyse stratégique de Porter afin d'examiner le changement d'environnement concurrentiel induit par la déréglementation. Dans le chapitre 2, nous présentons et justifions le choix des méthodes qui ont été retenues pour mesurer les changements de stratégie et la performance. Le choix stratégique des banques étant conçu comme un arbitrage entre différentes activités nous avons été conduits d'une part à identifier ces activités et d'autre part à proposer des indicateurs de cet arbitrage. Ces indicateurs seront issus des caractéristiques financières des banques qui traduisent dans une large mesure les orientations stratégiques imprimées à l'activité. En ce qui concerne la mesure de la stratégie de diversification nous proposons un nouveau type de mesure qui établit un pont entre les diverses mesures couramment utilisées et qui à la différence de celles-ci présente l'avantage de ne privilégier ni la situation de spécialisation ni celle de diversification. L'activité de crédit demeurant l'activité essentielle d'un grand nombre de banques nous analysons les arbitrages réalises par elles entre les différents prêts en utilisant alternativement le type de clientèle et la nature des besoins satisfaits comme critère de segmentation. Dans le chapitre 3, partant de questions issues d'une revue de la littérature nous examinons le lien entre environnement-stratégie et montrons que la déréglementation est bien un changement majeur d'environnement. L'incitation à changer de stratégie et la capacité à mettre en oeuvre ce changement dépendent également de la taille de la banque et de son niveau de performance. Dans le chapitre 4, nous montrons que le choix stratégique mis en oeuvre par les dirigeants, à savoir diversification ou spécialisation, n'influe sur l'évolution de la rentabilité que durant la période déréglementée. Nous offrons également aux dirigeants de banque une analyse par groupe stratégique qui les aide à analyser, et à prévoir l'évolution de leur rentabilité.

Book excerpt: "This paper investigates the leading causes of nonperforming loans during the economic and banking crises that affected a large number of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s. Empirical analysis shows a dramatic increase in these loans and extremely high credit risk, with significant differences between the CFA and non-CFA countries, and substantially higher financial costs for the latter sub-panel of countries. The results also highlight a strong causality between these loans and economic growth, real exchange rate appreciation, the real interest rate, net interest margins, and interbank loans consistent with the causality and econometric analysis, which reveal the significance of macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. The dramatic increase in these loans is largely driven by macroeconomic volatility and reflects the vulnerability of undiversified African economies, which remain heavily exposed to external shocks. Simulated results show that macroeconomic stability and economic growth are associated with a declining level of nonperforming loans; whereas adverse macroeconomic shocks coupled with higher cost of capital and lower interest margins are associated with a rising scope of nonperforming loans. These results are supported by long-term estimates of nonperforming loans derived from pseudo panel-based prediction models. "--World Bank web site.
