El principal objetivo de este libro es aportar un paso más, por pequeño que sea, a este largo pero bien entretenido recorrido. El libro se divide en seis grandes apartados: 1) Una extensa introducción que analiza las fuentes disponibles para el estudio de los libros, lectores y lecturas en el Siglo de Oro, y luego la formación y función de las bibliotecas particulares de la época. 2) Un estudio de la difusión de la lectura mediante dos ejemplos: la difusión de las obras de Fray Luis de Granada, verdadero autor ''bestseller'' de la época, y el impacto de los descubrimientos del Nuevo Mundo a base de la difusión de libros sobre el tema hallados en bibliotecas peninsulares. 3) Pieza central de todo el libro es un extenso análisis de catorce individuos y los libros que poseían. 4) Junto con el estudio de la difusión de la lectura, de los lectores y sus lecturas, ha de ir necesariamente el del mercado de libros a la venta, y en esto entran los libreros o mercaderes de libros. 5) Después del estudio y análisis de las bibliotecas particulares, de las condiciones de compra y venta de libros, se estudian los inventarios que han hecho posible este trabajo. Son dieciséis en total, el más temprano de 1536, el último de 1559. 6) Completan el libro varios apéndices, un índice de autores y obras anónimas y otro de títulos para todos los inventarios, una lista de las referencias bibliográficas, y una bibliografía de las obras consultadas en la confección del presente estudio.

Book excerpt: This book on the role of written and iconographic communication in the Atlantic World combines a broad outlook, geographically and chronologically, with the precise treatment of specific evidence extracted from the sources. The author argues that diatribes against chivalric fiction and the Index of Prohibited Books did not prevent proscribed literature from circulating freely on both sides of the Atlantic. On the contrary, he notes, such prohibitions may have increased the lure of certain books. A description of the process of registering and inspecting ships in Seville and upon reaching their destinations highlights opportunities for contraband, smuggling, fraud, and the corruption of officials entrusted with regulating the trade. Within the prominent spiritual genre, the author documents a shift from Erasmian to Tridentine thinking. The registers analyzed also suggest the growing popularity of literary works by Cervantes, Mateo Alemán, and Lope de Vega. It opens a fascinating window onto the book trade in the Americas. Different forms of participation in this culture included the use of books as fetishes and the possession of printed devotional images. The analysis of books as well as printed images supports larger contentions about their role as agents of evangelization and westernization. This book certainly opens up new worlds on the impact of books and images in the Atlantic World.

Ruan argues that these two cultural figures are linked by a shared form of deportment centered on prudent self-accommodation. This behavior is generated and governed by a courtly ethos or habitus that emerges as the result of the growth and influence of the court in Madrid. Ruan posits that both pícaro and cortesano, and their respective books, conduct manual and picaresque narrative, tacitly engage questions of identity and individualism by highlighting the valued resources or forms of capital that come to fashion and sustain self-identity. He places the books of the pícaro and cortesano within the larger polemic of early modern identity and individualism, and offers an account of the individual as agent whose actions are grounded on objective social relations, without those actions being simply the result of mechanistic adherence to the social order.

In the first full-length study of this commercially successful and intellectually significant genre, Bradbury underlines the service performed by the miscellanists as disseminators of knowledge and information to a popular readership. His comprehensive analysis of the miscelánea corrects long-standing misconceptions, starting from its poorly-understood terminology, and erects divisions between it and other related genres. His work illuminates the relationship between the Golden Age Spanish miscellany and those of the classical world and humanist milieu, and illustrates how the vernacular tradition moved away from these forebears. Bradbury examines in particular the later inclusion of explicitly fictional components, such as poetic compositions and short prose fiction, alongside the vulgarisation of erudite or inaccessible prose material, which was the primary function of the earlier Spanish miscellanies. He tackles the flexibility of the miscelánea as a genre by assessing the conceptual, thematic and formal aspects of such works, and exploring the interaction of these features. As a result, a genre model emerges, through which Golden Age works with fragmentary and non-continuous contents can better be interpreted and classified.
