Book excerpt: During the 17th and 18th century musicians' mobilities and migrations are essential for the European music history and the cultural exchange of music. Adopting viewpoints that reflect different methodological approaches and diversified research cultures, the book presents studies on central scopes, strategies and artistic outcomes of mobile and migratory musicians as well as on the transfer of music. By looking at elite and non-elite musicians and their everyday mobilities to major and minor centers of music production and practice, new biographical patterns and new stylistic paradigms in the European East, West and South emerge.

Download or read book Rossini written by Richard Osborne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gioachino Rossini was one of the most influential, as well as one of the most industrious and emotionally complex of the great nineteenth-century composers. Between 1810 and 1829, he wrote 39 operas, a body of work, comic and serious, which transformed Italian opera and radically altered the course of opera in France. His retirement from operatic composition in 1829, at the age of 37, was widely assumed to be the act of a talented but lazy man. In reality, political events and a series of debilitating illnesses were the determining factors. After drafting the Stabat Mater in 1832, Rossini wrote no music of consequence for the best part of twenty-five years, before the clouds lifted and he began composing again in Paris in the late 1850s. During this glorious Indian summer of his career, he wrote 150 songs and solo piano pieces his 'Sins of Old Age' and his final masterpiece, the Petite Messe solennelle. The image of Rossini as a gifted but feckless amateur-the witty, high-spirited bon vivant who dashed off The Barber of Seville in a mere thirteen days-persisted down the years, until the centenary of his death in 1968 inaugurated a process of re-evaluation by scholars, performers, and writers. The original 1985 edition of Richard Osborne's pioneering and widely acclaimed Rossini redefined the life and provided detailed analyses of the complete Rossini oeuvre. Twenty years on, all Rossini's operas have been staged and recorded, a Critical Edition of his works is well advanced, and a scholarly edition of his correspondence, including 250 previously unknown letters from Rossini to his parents, is in progress. Drawing on these past two decades of scholarship and performance, this new edition of Rossini provides the most detailed portrait we have yet had of one of the worlds best-loved and most enigmatic composers.

Book Synopsis The Theatre of Drottningholm - Then and Now by : Willmar Sauter
Download or read book The Theatre of Drottningholm - Then and Now written by Willmar Sauter and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thetre of Drottiningholm - Then and Now tells the story of the Drottningholm Court Theatre, from 1766 - the year it was built - to today's performances presented during annual summer festivals. The court theatre was rarely used after Gustav III's death in 1792 until it was rediscovered in 1921, luckily for us, because this has meant that not only the auditorium but also the stage machinery, painted flats and backdrops have been almost perfectly preserved. This book provides a vivid picture of the Drottningholm Court Theatre: the architecture, the many different activities which took place here during the Gustavian era, and the use made of the theatre since its rediscovery to explore the nature of Baroque performance....The Court Theatre at Drottninholm is a work of art in the sense John Keats envisioned in his Ode to A Grecian Urn: 'a thing of beauty is a joy forever.' But it is more than an objet d'art, an antiquarian piece to be enjoyed by experts, Its aesthetic values should not make us forget that it is also a historical document, which adds to our knowledge about how theatre was performed and...experienced during the epoch when Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz created it. --Cover.
Book Synopsis The Trumpet-Major Illustrated by : Thomas Hardy
Download or read book The Trumpet-Major Illustrated written by Thomas Hardy and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "he Trumpet-Major is a novel by Thomas Hardy published in 1880, and his only historical novel. It concerns the heroine, Anne Garland, being pursued by three suitors: John Loveday, the eponymous trumpet major in a British regiment, honest and loyal; his brother Bob, a flighty sailor; and Festus Derriman, the cowardly nephew of the local squire. Unusually for a Hardy novel, the ending is not entirely tragic; however, there remains an ominous element in the probable fate of one of the main characters. The novel is set in Weymouth during the Napoleonic wars;[1] the town was then anxious about the possibility of invasion by Napoleon.[2] Of the two brothers, John fights with Wellington in the Peninsular War, and Bob serves with Nelson at Trafalgar. The Napoleonic Wars was a setting that Hardy would use again in his play, The Dynasts, and it borrows from the same source material.[3]Edward Neill has called the novel an attempt to repeat the success of his earlier work Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), after the limited success of his intervening works"
