Book Synopsis Libertas and Thunderbolt by : Ronald L. Clark
Download or read book Libertas and Thunderbolt written by Ronald L. Clark and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAUTION Reading this book may cause your mind to be deliberately stretched well beyond its ability to shrink back to its original dimensions Carl Sagan, Steven Hawking, and others, are well known for their theory of why we do not see abundant intelligent extraterrestrial life all around us. The reason being, that once intelligent life discovers technology, that technology is used in a self-destructive orgy that brings about the extinction of all intelligent life within reach. So, when one looks out into the Cosmos to search for intelligent life, all life that once was there, no longer exists, save mankind. This theory, of course, has profound implications for us stranded here on spaceship Earth, especially as we watch in horror as our technology grinds out bigger and more powerful weapons of mass destruction every day. This book is a flight of fancy that supposes our Creators (with profound apologies to those who do not believe we have Creators) have undertaken a mission to save Humankind from blowing themselves to kingdom come just like all of the other "Intelligent" life has already done well before mankind began to build parking lots and Condos. Our Creators have names, and their names are Yahweh and Asherah. So come take an interstellar ride with Yahweh and Asherah as they struggle to help Humankind become an exception to the doomsday theories of Sagan and Hawking.
Book Synopsis Libertas and the Practice of Politics in the Late Roman Republic by : Valentina Arena
Download or read book Libertas and the Practice of Politics in the Late Roman Republic written by Valentina Arena and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive analysis of the idea of libertas and its conflicting uses in the political struggles of the late Roman Republic. By reconstructing Roman political thinking about liberty against the background of Classical and Hellenistic thought, it excavates two distinct intellectual traditions on the means allowing for the preservation and the loss of libertas. Considering the interplay of these traditions in the political debates of the first century BC, Dr Arena offers a significant reinterpretation of the political struggles of the time as well as a radical reappraisal of the role played by the idea of liberty in the practice of politics. She argues that, as a result of its uses in rhetorical debates, libertas underwent a form of conceptual change at the end of the Republic and came to legitimise a new course of politics, which led progressively to the transformation of the whole political system.

Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Democracy in Antiquity by : Paul Cartledge
Download or read book A Cultural History of Democracy in Antiquity written by Paul Cartledge and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys democracy broadly as a cultural phenomenon operating in different ways across a very wide range of ancient societies throughout Antiquity. It examines the experiences of those living in democratic communities and considers how ancient practices of democracy differ from our own. The origins of democracy can be traced in a general way to the earliest civilizations, beginning with the early urban societies of the Middle East, and can be seen in cities and communities across the Mediterranean world and Asia. In classical Athens, male citizens enjoyed full participation in the political life of the city and a flourishing democratic culture, as explored in detail in this volume. In other times and places democratic features were absent from the formal structures of regimes, but could still be found in the participatory structures of local social institutions. Each chapter takes a different theme as its focus: sovereignty; liberty and the rule of law; the “common good”; economic and social democracy; religion and the principles of political obligation; citizenship and gender; ethnicity, race, and nationalism; democratic crises, revolutions, and civil resistance; international relations; and beyond the polis. These ten different approaches to democracy in Antiquity add up to an extensive, synoptic coverage of the subject.

Download or read book Divine Qualities written by Anna J. Clark and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an aspect of how Romans thought about themselves. Its subject is 'divine qualities': qualities like Concord, Faith, Hope, Clemency, Fortune, Freedom, Piety, and Victory, which received public cult in Rome in the Republican period. Anna Clark draws on a wide range of evidence (literature, drama, coins, architecture, inscriptions and graffiti) to show that these qualities were not simply given cult because they were intrinsically important to 'Romans'. They rather became 'Roman' through claims, counter-claims, appropriations and explorations of them by different individuals. The resources brought into existence by cult (temples, altars, coin images, statues, passwords, votive inscriptions) were visible and accessible to a broad range of people. Divine qualities were relevant to a broader social spectrum than is usually recognized, and this has important consequences for our understanding of Roman society.
