Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all desire great love. Yet, there seems to be a lot in the way when it comes to cultivating a relationship we crave. Why is that? It’s time for a new template — one rooted in choice, truth, safety, and respect. To get us there, Mark Groves and Kylie McBeath, champions of positive philosophy, provide us a roadmap, one they walked themselves, to step out of protection mode and into connection mode. Groves and McBeath’s work—through their Create the Love seminars, workbooks, and consultation programs—have educated a new generation of relationship seekers on the best ways to practice and cultivate love. In Liberated Love, you’ll explore your original relationship blueprint and learn how it informs your current relationships (spoiler alert: it’s often a pretty direct line), and discover how limitation can be the key to finding freedom and experiencing full, fully-realized love with another person. Equipped with real-life situations and stories, exercises, rituals, and tools that lead to productive self-examination, Groves and McBeath illuminate how to be aware of our most instinctual defenses, survival strategies, and coping mechanisms, how to have conversations about relationships without turning them into “relationship conversations,” and how to date in a way that protects your heart as you open it up to new possibilities. In these pages, in a format you’ll want to turn to again and again, you’ll learn how to begin and maintain relationships that allow true self-expression—to feel safe and to feel real, involving, sustaining love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Igniting a long-overdue dialogue about how the legacy of racial injustice and white supremacy plays out in society at large and Buddhist communities in particular, this urgent call to action outlines a new dharma that takes into account the ways that racism and privilege prevent our collective awakening. The authors traveled around the country to spark an open conversation that brings together the Black prophetic tradition and the wisdom of the Dharma. Bridging the world of spirit and activism, they urge a compassionate response to the systemic, state-sanctioned violence and oppression that has persisted against black people since the slave era. With national attention focused on the recent killings of unarmed black citizens and the response of the Black-centered liberation groups such as Black Lives Matter, Radical Dharma demonstrates how social transformation and personal, spiritual liberation must be articulated and inextricably linked. Rev. angel Kyodo williams, Lama Rod Owens, and Jasmine Syedullah represent a new voice in American Buddhism. Offering their own histories and experiences as illustrations of the types of challenges facing dharma practitioners and teachers who are different from those of the past five decades, they ask how teachings that transcend color, class, and caste are hindered by discrimination and the dynamics of power, shame, and ignorance. Their illuminating argument goes beyond a demand for the equality and inclusion of diverse populations to advancing a new dharma that deconstructs rather than amplifies systems of suffering and prepares us to weigh the shortcomings not only of our own minds but also of our communities. They forge a path toward reconciliation and self-liberation that rests on radical honesty, a common ground where we can drop our need for perfection and propriety and speak as souls. In a society where profit rules, people's value is determined by the color of their skin, and many voices—including queer voices—are silenced, Radical Dharma recasts the concepts of engaged spirituality, social transformation, inclusiveness, and healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sharp and entertaining essay collection about the importance of multiple forms of love and friendship in a world designed for couples, from a laser-precise new voice. Sometimes it seems like there are two American creeds, self-reliance and marriage, and neither of them is mine. I experience myself as someone formed and sustained by others' love and patience, by student loans and stipends, by the kindness of strangers. Briallen Hopper's Hard to Love honors the categories of loves and relationships beyond marriage, the ones that are often treated as invisible or seen as secondary--friendships, kinship with adult siblings, care teams that form in times of illness, or various alternative family formations. She also values difficult and amorphous loves like loving a challenging job or inanimate objects that can't love you back. She draws from personal experience, sharing stories about her loving but combative family, the fiercely independent Emerson scholar who pushed her away, and the friends who have become her invented or found family; pop culture touchstones like the Women's March, John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, and the timeless series Cheers; and the work of writers like Joan Didion, Gwendolyn Brooks, Flannery O'Connor, and Herman Melville (Moby-Dick like you've never seen it!). Hard to Love pays homage and attention to unlikely friends and lovers both real and fictional. It is a series of love letters to the meaningful, if underappreciated, forms of intimacy and community that are tricky, tangled, and tough, but ultimately sustaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American claim that we should love and be passionate about our job may sound uplifting, or at least, harmless, but Do What You Love exposes the tangible damages such rhetoric has leveled upon contemporary society. Virtue and capital have always been twins in the capitalist, industrialized West. Our ideas of what the “virtues” of pursuing success in capitalism have changed dramatically over time. In the past, we believed that work undertaken with an ethos of industriousness promised financial stability and basic comfort and security for our families. Now, our working life is conflated with the pursuit of pleasure. Fantastically successful—and popular—entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey command us. “You’ve got to love what you do,” Jobs tells an audience of college grads about to enter the workforce, while Winfrey exhorts her audience to “live your best life.” The promises made to today’s workers seem so much larger and nobler than those of previous generations. Why settle for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage and a perfectly functional eight-year-old car when you can get rich becoming your “best” self and have a blast along the way? But workers today are doing more and more for less and less. This reality is frighteningly palpable in eroding paychecks and benefits, the rapid concentration of wealth in the hands of a tiny few, and workers’ loss of control over their labor conditions. But where is the protest and anger from workers against a system that tells them to love their work and asks them to do it for less? While winner-take-all capitalism grows ever more ruthless, the rhetoric of passion for labor proliferates. In Do What You Love, Tokumitsu articulates and examines the sacrifices people make for a chance at loveable, self-actualizing, and, of course, wealth-generating work and the conditions facilitated by this pursuit. This book continues the conversation sparked by the author’s earlier Slate article and provides a devastating look at the state of modern America’s labor and workforce.

With the love of a man, she appears enlightened to move freely and unencumbered knowing and relying upon his assured protection. She, in turn, is so pleased, she bestows honor on him. Complementing his character they portray a simultaneous reaction of Gods grace in cyclical motion. When one stops, plans lose momentum and tread less ground toward the purposes of God. This is where a prior season of cleansing and restoration prove beneficial. In this devotion to God, emotional healing, and spiritual fortitude is established. With the Lord, and through Holy Spirit, fears, insecurities, rejection, misguided decisions, and other negative emotions are discarded or diminished. Knowing self, through Him, she becomes self-less for him; this is an asset to keep the relationship moving and staying the course of God. ~Shellee A. Mitchell

Book excerpt: Along with thousands of other women in the '60s, Candy was swept along by the women's movement, unprepared for the attack on everything she believed to be true as she entered a small teachers' college in the mountains of North Carolina in the fall of 1961. The feminist rhetoric sounded good yet pitted her against the very nature of men-their masculinity and the desire to provide for her and protect her. "I can take care of myself," she defiantly proclaimed. Reaping the lies of the sexual revolution and a failed marriage, wounded and broken, Candy found herself alone with two children to raise, carrying a dark secret of shame and regret. When Candy found the answer to her heart's cry to be truly liberated- and to be loved unconditionally and unreservedly-she also found healing and deliverance out of the lies she had believed for so many years. Finally, she was able to love, respect, and honor one special and imperfect man, the man who finally found her and pledged his love to her and her two children. This is a story of overcoming the past, of restoration and redemption, and of finding the truth that sets us all free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What would the world look like if girls grew up reading fairytales made from the magic they carry inside themselves? Breathtakingly beautiful, is what.” —Lidia Yuknavich, national bestselling author In her debut children’s book, Rebecca Solnit reimagines a classic fairytale with a fresh, feminist Cinderella and new plot twists that will inspire young readers to change the world, featuring gorgeous silhouettes from Arthur Rackham on each page. In this modern twist on the classic story, Cinderella, who would rather just be Ella, meets her fairy godmother, goes to a ball, and makes friends with a prince. But that is where the familiar story ends. Instead of waiting to be rescued, Cinderella learns that she can save herself and those around her by being true to herself and standing up for what she believes. “Being a princess is absolutely fine if that’s what you choose. It’s having those choices taken away from you that make for big problems. Cinderella in Solnit’s book is given that choice. She’s allowed to say what her dreams are, and then she goes out and attains them. And they’re not huge ridiculous dreams but small, happy, manageable ones. Ultimately, that’s the gift Ms. Solnit is giving kids with this book.” —School Library Journal “This is a reminder of hope and possibility, of kindness and compassion, and—perhaps most salient—imagination and liberty. Through the imaginations of our childhoods, can we find our true selves liberated in adulthood?” —Chelsea Handler “This is, hands down, a wonderful book—one that even the jaded reader will clasp upon completion with a contented sigh.” —The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than see love as a natural form of affection, Love As Human Freedom sees love as a practice that changes over time through which new social realities are brought into being. Love brings about, and helps us to explain, immense social-historical shifts—from the rise of feminism and the emergence of bourgeois family life, to the struggles for abortion rights and birth control and the erosion of a gender-based division of labor. Drawing on Hegel, Paul A. Kottman argues that love generates and explains expanded possibilities for freely lived lives. Through keen interpretations of the best known philosophical and literary depictions of its topic—including Shakespeare, Plato, Nietzsche, Ovid, Flaubert, and Tolstoy—his book treats love as a fundamental way that we humans make sense of temporal change, especially the inevitability of death and the propagation of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Love Manifesto grew out of my most earnest desire to spread my belief that love is the answer to all of life's disappointments. A manifesto is a declaration of an individual's intentions, motives, or views which usually continues to reinforce a position established in a previous published work. This manifesto is a combination of expressions that captures elements of artistic expression peppered with a political undertone. My first book-If Not for Love was birthed from the pain of surviving the trauma of growing up a ward of the state then pushing through the unspeakable death of my first-born son to realize the love I had for my mother to becoming paralyzing by my mom's death. I personally learned that the despair caused by death and rejection can stall the potential of living. My journey has given me the foundation to use my pain to develop a blueprint for motivating others and using my experiences to be a blessing to someone. It is God's will that I strive to emulate the love he has bestowed upon me. Each day I am striving to "let love liberate me" from the disappointments that life brings. I am consistently working to "perfect my love walk". I will admit some days it is harder than others yet still I strive without ceasing or losing momentum. The Love Manifesto is for those who desire to bask in the delight of God's love despite the circumstances and situations that are designed to make you digress or throw your hands up in surrender to angry, hate, jealousy or defeat. I hope this book encourages your spirit and gives you the energy to get back up no matter how many times life knocks you down. The Love Manifesto is a public declaration that gives meaning to my conviction that love is the force that gives human beings the power needed to reach the pinnacle of living. Love gives us conspicuous bravery to "no longer accept the things we cannot accept" but without malice in our hearts. Love is a life force that can connect us to the spiritual forces of our creator. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, I have been able to forgive those who have plotted to hurt me and derail my destiny. Jesus Christ has given me a spirit of hope and confidence not fear nor degradation; so, I can mirror this in my actions but most of all in my heart! The gift of love has sustained me through all of the ups and downs and kept me immersed in the humanity of living without hate in my heart. Humility has given me the tenacity to preserve and hold steadfast to the fruits of God's divine love. It's given me the strength to forgive those who mean me no good in their intentions and actions. Because of God's Love, I have the wisdom inside of me to forgive others. My God sister told me that God's love is the truth and it is a real gift that God has given to each of us. In my journey of living I have come to the realization that in God's love I stand liberated from every valley experience that has stalled, hurt or broken my heart. I dedicate this book to all those who yearn to love and be loved but; especially to my sisters. In loving sometimes our hearts will lead us to the mountain top and then there are the valley moments. I want everyone to know that there is liberation in love if in God's love you stand. Let your heart be encouraged and let your power resound. Let the echoes of agape love release you abound. I want the universe to know that there is no other force more powerful than a person who can receive and give love. To this I declare, The Love Manifesto can be a source for life's journey as we surrender our doubts while standing in the beauty of each encounter of the heart to arrive back at love.
