Download or read book Republicanismo written by Maurizio Viroli and published by Ed. Universidad de Cantabria. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Liberalism and Republicanism in the Historical Imagination by : Joyce Appleby
Download or read book Liberalism and Republicanism in the Historical Imagination written by Joyce Appleby and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author claims that liberal assumptions color everything American, from ideas about human nature to fears about big government. Not the dreaded "L" word of the 1988 presidential campaign; liberalism in its historical context emerged from the modern faith in free inquiry, natural rights, economic liberty, and democratic government. The author contrasts this view with classical republicanism--ornate, aristocratic, prescriptive, and concerned with the common good. The two concepts, as the author shows, posed choices in their day and in ours, specifically in addressing the complex relations between individual and community, personal liberty and the common good, aspiration and practical wisdom.

Book Synopsis Associations and Other Groups in Science by : Ana Delicado
Download or read book Associations and Other Groups in Science written by Ana Delicado and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Associations and Other Groups in Science: An Historical and Contemporary Perspective brings together a collection of texts on the subject of scientific associations and their role in science and society. It combines historical approaches, focused on the role that associations (and other groups) played in the development of particular scientific disciplines in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with contemporary analyses that highlight the involvement of associations in engagement with wider publics. A somewhat neglected subject in the social studies of science, scientific associations provide an opportunity for reflecting on and discussing wider issues in science, such as the place of scientific advice in policy-making, the structure of scientific careers, and the need for building bridges between the scientific community and society at large. Since all chapters examine the Portuguese scientific system, this book also contributes to acquaint international audiences with the history and the current situation of science in Portugal. Some of the research findings included here are valid across borders and may be used for comparative research. Though mainly aimed at the science and technology studies community, it has the potential to reach readers in other social sciences, as well as in the “hard” sciences, keen on the history of their disciplines.
Book Synopsis Southern Europe in the Age of Revolutions by : Maurizio Isabella
Download or read book Southern Europe in the Age of Revolutions written by Maurizio Isabella and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of revolutions in the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, Sicily and Greece in the 1820s that reveals a popular constitutional culture in the South After the turbulent years of the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna’s attempt to guarantee peace and stability across Europe, a new revolutionary movement emerged in the southern peripheries of the continent. In this groundbreaking study, Maurizio Isabella examines the historical moment in the 1820s when a series of simultaneous uprisings took the quest for constitutional government to Portugal, Spain, the Italian peninsula, Sicily and Greece. Isabella places these events in a broader global revolutionary context and, decentering conventional narratives of the origins of political modernity, reveals the existence of an original popular constitutional culture in southern Europe. Isabella looks at the role played by secret societies, elections, petitions, protests and the experience of war as well as the circulation of information and individuals across seas and borders in politicising new sectors of society. By studying the mobilisation of the army, the clergy, artisans, rural communities and urban populations in favour of or against the revolutions, he shows that the uprisings in the South—although their ultimate fate was determined by the intervention of more powerful foreign countries—enjoyed considerable popular support in ideologically divided societies and led to the introduction of constitutions. Isabella argues that these movements informed the political life of Portugal and Spain for many decades and helped to forge a long-lasting revolutionary tradition in the Italian peninsula. The liberalism that emerged as a popular political force across southern Europe, he contends, was distinct from French and British varieties.
