Book Synopsis The Invention of Free Press by : Edoardo Tortarolo
Download or read book The Invention of Free Press written by Edoardo Tortarolo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracking the relationship between the theory of press control and the realities of practicing daily press censorship prior to publication, this volume on the suppression of dissent in early modern Europe tackles a topic with many elusive and under-researched characteristics. Pre-publication censorship was common in absolutist regimes in Catholic and Protestant countries alike, but how effective it was in practice remains open to debate. The Netherlands and England, where critical content segued into outright lampoonery, were unusual for hard-wired press freedoms that arose, respectively, from a highly competitive publishing industry and highly decentralized political institutions. These nations remained extraordinary exceptions to a rule that, for example in France, did not end until the revolution of 1789. Here, the author’s European perspective provides a survey of the varying censorship regulations in European nations, as well as the shifting meanings of ‘freedom of the press’. The analysis opens up fascinating insights, afforded by careful reading of primary archival sources, into the reactions of censors confronted with manuscripts by authors seeking permission to publish. Tortarolo sets the opinions on censorship of well-known writers, including Voltaire and Montesquieu, alongside the commentary of anonymous censors, allowing us to revisit some common views of eighteenth-century history. How far did these writers, their reasoning stiffened by Enlightenment values, promote dissident views of absolutist monarchies in Europe, and what insights did governments gain from censors’ reports into the social tensions brewing under their rule? These questions will excite dedicated researchers, graduate students, and discerning lay readers alike.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Economic Integration (Routledge Revivals) by : Bela Balassa
Download or read book The Theory of Economic Integration (Routledge Revivals) written by Bela Balassa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1962, The Theory of Economic Integration provides an excellent exposition of a complex and far-reaching topic. Professor Balassa has been remarkably successful in covering so much ground with such care and balance, in a treatment which is neither in any way abstruse nor unnecessarily technical. His book will interest economists in Europe by reason of its subject and treatment, but it is also a valuable and reliable textbook for students tackling integration as part of a course of International Economics and for those studying Public Finance. He distinguishes between the various forms of integration (free trade area, customs union, common market, economics union, and total integration). In addition, he applies the theoretical principles to current projects such as the European Common Market and Free Trade Area, and to Latin American integration projects. In offering this theoretical study, the author builds on the conclusions of other writers, but goes beyond this in providing a unifying framework for previous contributions and in exploring questions that in the past received little attention – in particular, the relationship between economic integration and growth (especially the interrelationship between market size and growth, and the implications of various factors for economic growth in an integrated area).

Book Synopsis Lobbying, pluralism and European integration by : Université libre de Bruxelles. Institut de sociologie
Download or read book Lobbying, pluralism and European integration written by Université libre de Bruxelles. Institut de sociologie and published by P.I.E-Peter Lang S.A., Editions Scientifiques Internationales. This book was released on 1998 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Much attention has recently been given to EU lobbying. The reason is no doubt the proliferation, diversification and reorganisation of interest groups gravitating around EU institutions. Publications on lobbying in the EU are numerous, yet the connection between lobbying and democracy, ethics or the evolving political system of the EU is generally less well appreciated. Drawing upon in-depth case studies, as well as on the experience of practitioners, this book makes an attempt to reassess the validity of certain analytical frameworks and classical distinctions such as «pluralism versus corporatism» in the light of current practice. While seeking to identify patterns in interest intermediation, it also focuses on the regulation of lobbying and on crucial issues such as ethics and corruption. Several actors present on the lobbying scene are examined in turn, be it at the national, subnational, supranational or even extra European levels. Le livre contient des contributions en français et en anglais. The book contains contributions in French and in English.
