Book excerpt: The photo album is dedicated to the life of Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy – a great Russian writer. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. This book represents the history of his photos taken from 1900 to 1905 included. This period of time was full of important events in the writer’s life and in the current reality to which the writer was strongly responsive. Most photos of Lev Tolstoy published in this album were taken by amateurs, i.e. members of his family, his friends and acquaintances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published immediately after the Russian revolution, this translation of Tolstoy's 1895-1899 journals is remarkable for what it captures of both the time and the man. In it, he wrestles with God, the nature of consciousness, love, marriage, religion, socialism, writing, and the nature of reality. "Now I am an ordinary man, L. N. (Tolstoi), and animal, and now I am the messenger of God. I am all the time the same man." "There is no greater prop for a selfish, peaceful life, than the occupation of art for art’s sake." Nearing 70, he was also struggling with his health and frequent bouts of depression. Yet the power of his intellect and his forceful persistence in trying to understand his life come through in nearly every page. Increasingly radical in his thinking, he never fails to fascinate, even while indulging in the very weaknesses he deplores. A remarkable document of a remarkable life, this book includes a lengthy introduction, biographical material on Tolstoy, and notes about the writing he was working on in this period. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: The ultimate meaning of the Russian Revolution which took place in March, 1917, can be best understood through the pages of the Journal of Leo Tolstoi which is here printed. The spiritual qualities which make up the mind and personality of Tolstoi are the spiritual qualities which make up the new era among men which is being waged so painfully and so uncompromisingly at the present moment on the soil of Russia. One holds the key to the other, for no land but Russia could have produced a Tolstoi, and in no land but Russia could Tolstoi have been so embraced and so absorbed. They are both flesh of each other's flesh, and I place them equally in greatness against each other. Great and wonderful as is the Russian people, so Tolstoi was as great and wonderful as the Russian people. I say this knowing well the pain and impatience both felt for each other in the long eighty-two years of Tolstoi's life here, but it was the pain and the impatience of great love and infinite understanding, of feeling and knowing each other's pulse-beats, and not the misunderstanding of strangers.

Book excerpt: To one not familiar with the Russian language the accessible data relative to the external life of Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoi, the author of this book, are, to say the least, not voluminous. His name does not appear in that heterogeneous record of celebrities known as The Men of the Time, nor is it to be found in M. Vapereau's comprehensive Dictionnaire des Contemporains. And yet Count Leo Tolstoi is acknowledged by competent critics to be a man of extraordinary genius, who, certainly in one instance, has produced a masterpiece of literature which will continue to rank with the great artistic productions of this age. Perhaps it is enough for us to know that he was born on his father's estate in the Russian province of Tula, in the year 1828; that he received a good home education and studied the oriental languages at the University of Kasan; that he was for a time in the army, which he entered at the age of twenty-three as an officer of artillery, serving later on the staff of Prince Gortschakof; and that subsequently he alternated between St. Petersburg and Moscow, leading the existence of super-refined barbarism and excessive luxury, characteristic of the Russian aristocracy. He saw life in country and city, in camp and court.

THE DIARY OF LEO NIKOLAYEVIGH TOLSTOY 1846 or 18471 March xjth, Kazan.--It is six days since I entered the hospital, and six days since I became almost contented. Les petiies causes produisent les grands effects.2 [20]]. Yes, I have mounted the step on which I long ago set foot, but on to which I had hitherto failed to wriggle my body (probably because, thoughtlessly, I had kept putting my left foot before my right). Here I am entirely alone, and have no one to disturb me. Here I have no servant, no one helps me. Consequently nothing extraneous is able to influence my judgment and recollection, and my mental activity cannot but develop. The chief advantage is the fact that I have come to see clearly that the irregular life which the majority of fashionable people take to be an outcome of youth is, really, an outcome of early spiritual corruption. The man living in society3 finds solitude as beneficial as the man not living in society finds social intercourse. Let a man but withdraw from society, and retire into himself, and his reason will strip off the spectacles through which he has hitherto seen everything in a corrupt light, and cause his view of things to undergo such a clarification that he will be at a loss to understand how he had failed to perceive things as they are. Only let reason do its work, and it will point out to you your destiny, and furnish you with rules with which to enter boldly into society. Everything conformable with man's prime faculty, reason, will be conformable with everything else existent. For the reason of the individual human being is a portion of everything else existent: and a portion cannot disorganize the whole. Yet the whole can annul a portion: wherefore 'fashion your reason so as to conform with...
