Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I published “Denizens of New Boston Road” Fred asked me why I had listed our brother Joseph Patrick Kiley Jr. as the author. It was not a mistake on my part; it was the only way I could get on with the project because I had been badgering him for weeks to allow me to list him as the author, which he was. At that time he was still teaching at Trenton State and I assume he was reluctant to let his students and associates see his published works. He mellowed after a short time, because everyone approved of his writings. The publication of “Denizens” led to a discussion of his other writings and that brought up the subject of the letters which we had been exchanging over the years. He told me that the letters meant a lot to him because he used them to force him to continue writing even when the mood to write wasn’t “on” him. He also told me that the freedom he enjoyed in writing letters was the limited audience to whom he was writing; friends and family. In this publication I am violating that limitation by allowing you to enter into the audience that can see and read the thoughts he had intended for a select few. Fred felt that in letter writing there could be an intimate bonding between the writer and the recipient; in the best case a touching of souls. Fred was still an innocent in many respects; even after the war had stripped him of most of his innocence. He wrote using humor, sarcasm, and other artifices to conceal his true message which was love. He had a love for natural beauty, children and animals. He had admiration for talent, honesty and integrity. I hope that you can discover that by reading his letters. He was my big brother; and I loved him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative non-fiction based upon the romance & actual love letters between two Kentuckians from 1900-1904. Before radio, television, and autos, they carried on their romance separated by 100 miles, a full day's round trip by train and not manageable by buggy or horseback. Times and love were fraught with danger. They faced deadly plagues, putrid water systems, horrific accidents, violence, murders, and vicious political turmoil that included the assassinations of Kentucky Governor William Goebel and U.S. President William McKinley. Women had no vote, few rights, and were blocked from many occupations. Men were expected to be sole financial providers, reliably smart, brave and stable. Life's choices thwarted dreams as both yearned for a bit or sweetness to make life bearable. About the only reliable things they had were local daily newspapers and US Postal Service mail delivery 365 days a year (366 in leap years), including Sundays and holidays. Their letters engendered curiosity & this book.

Book excerpt: ýWitty and effortlessly fluid. His books are laugh-out-loud funny.ýýArabella Weir Three sparkling volumes featuring that most effervescent of peers, Trederick, fifth Earl of Ickenham Perhaps it is due to the fact that his wife Jane keeps a watchful eye on him for much of the time, but when Lord Ickenham breaks free he becomes pure dynamite and bumps-a-daisy as billy-o. These three stories, ýUncle Fred in the Springtimeý, ýUncle Dynamiteý and ýCocktail Timeý, will vouch for that. Foiling a plot to relieve Lord Emsworth of his beloved prize pig, the Empress; arranging a little match-making for his love-lorn nephew Pongo Twistleton; knocking off Sir Raymond Bastableýs topper with a Brazil nut: there really are, as Uncle Fred himself admits, ýno limits, literally none, to what I can accomplish in the springtimeý.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a muggy, late August afternoon in 1936, somewhere along the banks of Greasy Creek, Life found Grace -- walking the dusty mile between work and home in a brand new pair of leather kitten-heeled pumps, blond curls bouncing in the sun. Two weeks later, Lifie Jay Preston and Grace Mollette married, a union that lasted until their deaths fifty-eight years later. There was something about them, their daughter Linda would discover, a kind of radiance and love of living that would mark them in the memories of every person they encountered -- a song that resonates years after their passing. Songs of Life and Grace is their story, told by the daughter whose own life grew out of their loving ministries and Appalachian sensibilities. Linda Scott DeRosier, the celebrated author of Creeker: A Woman's Journey, draws on family letters and lore, interviews, and her own recollections to reach a better understanding of her parents and the families that formed them both. Along the way, she introduces an unforgettable cast of characters: the formidable Grandma Emmy; Uncle Burns, an infamous ladies' man; helpless and simple Aunt Jo; and gentle Pop Pop, who could peel an apple in one long, unbroken spiral. A stirring, honest look at Appalachia and a tribute to the unbreakable bonds of family, Songs of Life and Grace establishes DeRosier as one of the most vital and exciting new voices of the American South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franklin Roosevelt instinctively understood that a politician of his era who was unable to control his own body would be perceived as unable to control the body politic. He therefore took great care to hide his polioinduced lameness both visually and verbally. In FDR's Body Politics, Davis W. Houck and Amos Kiewe draw on never-before-used primary sources to analyze the silences surrounding Roosevelt's disability, the words he chose to portray himself and his policies as powerful and health-giving, and the methods he used to maximize the appearance of physical strength. They examine his broad strategies, as well as the speeches Roosevelt delivered during his political comeback after polio struck, to understand how he overcame the whispering campaign against him in 1928 and 1932. Ultimately, this is a story of triumph and courage that reveals a master politician's understanding of the body politic in the most fundamental of ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1942 colonial Burma was in a state of military, economic and constitutional collapse. Japanese forces controlled almost the whole country and thousands of evacuees were trapped in a huge area of no-man's-land in the north. They made their way to India through the so-called 'jungles of death', attempting to trek out of Burma amidst perilous conditions. Drawing on diverse and previously unpublished accounts, Michael D. Leigh analyses the experiences of evacuees in both Burma and India and critically examines the impact of evacuation on colonial and Burmese politics in the lead-up to independence in 1948. This study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Burmese history, 20th-century imperialism and the global reach of the Second World War.

Put together from three different collections, Letters and Dispatches is the most thorough book of Wallenberg’s writings and letters. With his disappearance behind the Iron Curtain in January of 1945, he became tragically mysterious. While the story of Wallenberg has been told many times over, the best way we can possibly understand and relate to him is through his written word, which Letters and Dispatches has in full.

Book excerpt: Wonderfully funny and also deeply touching, I Am One of You Forever is the story of a young boy's coming of age. Set in the hills and hollows of western North Carolina in the years around World War II, it tells of ten-year-old Jess and his family -- father, mother, grandmother, foster brother, and an odd assortment of other relatives -- who usher Jess into the adult world, with all its attendant joys and sorrows, knowledge and mystery. Jess's father is feisty, restless, and fun-loving. His mother is straitlaced and serious but accepts with grace and good humor the antics of the men of the family, a trait she learned from her own mother. Johnson Gibbs is the orphaned teenager who comes to live with them on their mountain farm. Life on the laurel-covered mountain is isolated and at times difficult, but for Jess it is made rich and remarkable through his relationship with his father and, especially, Johnson Gibbs. Visiting the farm from time to time is a gallery of eccentric relatives who are surely among the most memorable creations in recent fiction. Uncle Luden is a womanizer who left the mountains years ago for a job in California that "paid actual cash money." Uncle Gurton has a spooky way of appearing and disappearing without ever seeming to enter or exit, but it is his flowing beard, which he has apparently never trimmed and which he keeps tucked inside his overalls, that is of most fascination to Jess. Uncle Zeno is a storyteller. With the words "That puts me in mind of..." everyone around knows that he is about to launch into another of his endless tales. Uncle Runkin, who always brings his handmade coffin to sleep in whenever he visits, spends his time carving intricate designs into the coffin and trying to find just the right epitaph for his tombstone. Aunt Samantha Barefoot stops by for a brief spell, too. A country singer and cousin to Jess's grandmother, she is a woman of uncensored speech (Jess learns a lot from her) and honest emotions. Chappell tells the story of all of these characters in a series of chapters that range from fantasy and near farce to pathos. As notable for its lyrical descriptions of the rural settings as for its finely honed vernacular dialogue, I Am One of You Forever shows us a world full of wit and wisdom and the sadness at the heart of things. As one would expect from a poet like Fred Chappell, every line offers its own pleasures and satisfactions.
