Book excerpt: Twelve-year-old Grace and her mother have always been their own family, traveling from place to place like gypsies. But Grace wants to finally have a home all their own. Just when she thinks she's found it her mother says it's time to move again. Grace summons the courage to tell her mother how she really feels and will always regret that her last words to her were angry ones. After her mother's sudden death, Grace is forced to live with a grandmother she's never met. She can't imagine her mother would want her to stay with this stranger. Then Grace finds clues in a mysterious treasure hunt, just like the ones her mother used to send her on. Maybe it is her mother, showing her the way to her true home. Lyrical, poignant and fresh, The Secret Hum of a Daisy is a beautifully told middle grade tale with a great deal of heart.

Book excerpt: "The car stopped, and I could tell I was expected to get out, but I was too scared to move. I had not noticed the man get out of the front seat and was startled when the door on my side of the car suddenly sprang open. The man reached for my arm, and as he did his jacket opened just enough for me to catch sight of a gun. I tried to scream, 'Who are you people? What is this place? How did I get here?' but no words came. The man with the gun pulled me out and led me into the house. My mind spun trying to figure it all out. The only thought that came to me was that I had been kidnapped. " Imagine if you suddenly had no idea where you were, who you were with, and what had happened. In "Family Secrets: Letters to My Granddaughters," four-year-old Grace loses her memory and is plunged into an ever-widening circle of lies, suppression, and denial. The next thirty years are shrouded in family secrets that eventually pull every aspect of her life into darkness. Though the twists and turns she faced should have destroyed her, Grace Ann Neuharth lived to tell the tale through the unforgettable narrative style of inspirational author Wanda Winters-Gutierrez. "Family Secrets" will leave you intrigued, stunned, and ultimately inspired as you discover the kind of faith that enables a person to live through the unthinkable and move past survival to victory.

Book excerpt: In 2003, Olufemi Vaughan received from his ninety-five-year-old father, Abiodun, a trove of more than three thousand letters written by four generations of his family in Ibadan, Nigeria, between 1926 and 1994. The people who wrote these letters had emerged from the religious, social, and educational institutions established by the Church Missionary Society, the preeminent Anglican mission in the Atlantic Nigerian region following the imposition of British colonial rule. Abiodun, recruited to be a civil servant in the colonial Department of Agriculture, became a leader of a prominent family in Ibadan, the dominant Yoruba city in southern Nigeria. Reading deeply in these letters, Vaughan realized he had a unique set of sources to illuminate everyday life in modern Nigeria. Letter writing was a dominant form of communication for Western-educated elites in colonial Africa, especially in Nigeria. Exposure to the modern world and a growing sense of nationalism were among the factors that led people to begin exchanging letters, particularly in their interactions with British colonial authorities. Through careful textual analysis and broad contextualization, Vaughan reconstructs dominant storylines, including themes such as kinship, social mobility, Western education, modernity, and elite consolidation in colonial and post-colonial Nigeria. Vaughan brings his prodigious skills as an interdisciplinary scholar to bear on this wealth of information, bringing to life a portrait, at once intimate and expansive, of a community during a transformative period in African history.

Book excerpt: Ever since seventeen-year-old Ann Bennett was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition two years ago, her family has been pulling apart. Ann and her two younger siblings fight constantly, as do their parents. When the doctors announce that Ann's only hope of survival is a heart transplant by the end of the summer, the Bennetts decide to wait for news of a donor at a family vacation home on the Oregon coast, near Haystack Rock. But rather than healing their differences, the time away only widens the rifts between them. That is, until they learn about The Winner's Game, a game their great grandparents invented to save their marriage decades ago. It doesn't work immediately, it takes some time to figure out the right way to play, but little by little things start to change. It seems everything might be okay, until the day tragedy strikes, and they are confronted with what it really means to love -- and to be a family.

Book excerpt: Juliet Friesen is ten years old when her family moves to Nicaragua. It is 1984, the height of Nicaragua's post-revolutionary war, and the peace-activist Friesens have come to protest American involvement. In the midst of this tumult, Juliet's family lives outside of the boundaries of ordinary life. They've escaped, and the ordinary rules don't apply. Threat is pervasive, danger is real, but the extremity of the situation also produces a kind of euphoria, protecting Juliet's family from its own cracks and conflicts. When Juliet's younger brother becomes sick with cancer, their adventure ends abruptly. The Friesens return to Canada only to find that their lives beyond Nicaragua have become the war zone. One by one, they drift from each other, and Juliet grows to adulthood, pulled between her desire to live a free life like the one she remembers in Nicaragua, and her desire to build for her own children a life more settled than her parents could provide. With laser-sharp prose and breathtaking insight, these stories herald Carrie Snyder as one of Canada's most prodigiously talented writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Letter to my Grandson is written to the world from the viewpoint of a successful grandfather who sees strong character qualities lacking in the world today. Myers writes about things like living with integrity, courage, and happiness that are not related to the biggest house, fastest car, or largest bank accounts. Chapter titles like: Any job worth doing is worth doing well; To know love, know yourself; Integrity is worth a fortune, but costs only five cents are anecdotal lessons that he hopes not only will serve his grandson Ian well, but also other sons and grandsons as well. G. Spencer Myers is a man on a mission to encourage others to live with respect for themselves, the earth, and those who share the planet with them. He has been a self-made millionaire and he's been nearly broke. He's made good decisions and others he might not do again. His straight-from the- hip style makes the reading easy and the lessons memorable. A great read for anyone age 18-80!

Time stood still and I pictured the people exactly as they were then. As I looked around things were even more dismal now than they were fifty years ago. As we drove past the High School my mind drifted back to the morning I was summoned to the Principals office and I could hear his voice and feel the viciousness that spewed from his mouth We dont want your kind here, and if your Momma and your Daddy will agree well be glad to send you to reform school at Chilacothe. And I can guarantee you well lynch that nigger if he shows up at the Homecoming next week! I was scared to death. I had to warn Andy. That night I found out his parents had whisked him out of town. What was I going to do? The bus ride to Denver seemed endless. This would be the farthest I had ever been from home and I had NEVER been this far by myself. My life as I had known it was over. Why had my parents kept the real ugly truth hidden from me? Could I, a fifteen year old girl, survive the hatred in America that I was just learning about. Thank God I would be safe with Andy. We could conquer racism with love, couldnt we? Although the U.S. Supreme Court decision to legalize Interracial Marriages in Amercia with the Loving v. Virginia case was establisted in 1967, Andy and I were the first Black/White Interracial Couple to legally be married in Colorado ten years earlier in 1957.
