Book excerpt: Letters to Cody is a self-improvement guide book. The intent of this informational guide is to point out valuable; and moral subjects along with the wisdom of God, the Proverbs of Solomon, and other authors much greater than myself, whom I have learned from. I have heard it said that “experience is the greatest teacher, but it need not be your own experience.” My hopes are to pass on what I believe are the smartest things that I have ever learned, to my Grandson. May this book be of value to others who also share my philosophy. Thank you.

Download or read book The Pie Letters written by Coletta Kewitt and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after starting a “Pie of the Month Club,” Coletta Kewitt’s business grew to eighty pies a month. Using a commercial kitchen about thirty miles from her home, she would head into town after a day of baking with a car filled with warm pie. Along the way, she prayed for no sudden stops. When her dear friend, Paul, died, she wrote her first “pie letter,” which she taped to the top of the pie boxes. Customers urged her to write more letters, and thus began her monthly essays on pie and life. Many times, she would see customers sitting in their cars reading their pie letters before taking off for home. To add an element of fun to the pie club, small pieces of artwork designed by friend and artist Cynthia Weed, were placed inside the lid of one pie box a month. The winner would win the artwork and a pie. After years of enjoying the “Pie of the Month Club,” Coletta and Cynthia began another adventure: weaving passions of the soul in art and words. They found that patience is P.I.E. – “patience in everything,” which is one of the greatest blessings God can bestow on us.

Book Synopsis Native Performers in Wild West Shows by : Linda Scarangella McNenly
Download or read book Native Performers in Wild West Shows written by Linda Scarangella McNenly and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now that the West is no longer so wild, it’s easy to dismiss Buffalo Bill Cody’s world-famous Wild West shows as promoters of stereotypes and clichés. But looking at this unique American genre from the Native American point of view provides thought-provoking new perspectives. Focusing on the experiences of Native performers and performances, Linda Scarangella McNenly begins her examination of these spectacles with Buffalo Bill’s 1880s pageants. She then traces the continuing performance of these acts, still a feature of regional celebrations in both Canada and the United States—and even at Euro Disney. Drawing on interviews with contemporary performers and descendants of twentieth-century performers, McNenly elicits insider perspectives to suggest new interpretations of their performances and experiences; she also uses these insights to analyze archival materials, especially photographs. Some Native performers saw Wild West shows not necessarily as demeaning, but rather as opportunities—for travel, for employment, for recognition, and for the preservation and expression of important cultural traditions. Other Native families were able to guide their own careers and even create their own Wild West shows. Today, Native performers at Buffalo Bill Days in Sheridan, Wyoming, wear their own regalia and choreograph their own performances. Through dancing and music, they express their own vision of a contemporary Native identity based on powwow cultures. Proud of their skills and successes, Native performers at Euro Disney are establishing promising careers. The effects of colonialism are undeniable, yet McNenly’s study reveals how these Native peoples have adapted and re-created Wild West shows to express their own identities and to advance their own goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and Social Justice Education offers inspiration and tools for educators to craft critical, meaningful, and transformative arts education curriculum and arts integration projects. The images, descriptive texts, essays, and resources are grounded within a clear social justice framework and linked to ideas about culture as commons. Essays and a section written by and for teachers who have already incorporated contemporary artists and ideas into their curriculums help readers to imagine ways to use the content in their own settings. This book is enhanced by a Companion Website (www.routledge.com/cw/quinn) featuring artists and artworks, project examples, and dialogue threads for educators. Proposing that art can contribute in a wide range of ways to the work of envisioning and making a more just world, this imaginative, practical, and engaging sourcebook of contemporary artists’ works and education resources advances the field of arts education, locally, nationally, and internationally, by moving beyond models of discipline-based or expressive art education. It will be welcomed by all educators seeking to include the arts and social justice in their curricula.
