Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the War: Between Germany and France Do you know what it is that people here are afraid Of Some of our Politicians, to whom I do not belong, profess to believe in the existence of a plot of long standing between the Cabinets of Paris and Florence. They think that just as France has been forced into a war against us, SO it will be with Italy, unless Italian citizens prove themselves to be stronger and wiser than the French have done. And do you know what the friends of Italy reply to his Sf Translated from the Italian by I. C. They say, AS for the Italian Cabinet, anything is possible; but as for the Italian people, they will sup port the Germans, and offer an invincible obstacle to any such policy. Still, to say the truth, we are not entirely safe. It is only too easy to deceive a people; and I do not feel convinced that your countrymen recognize the serious ness of this impending danger, or that they are on the alert in looking out for it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally appearing at the same time as the pacifist novel All Quiet on the Western Front, this powerful collection provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of an enemy that had been thoroughly demonized by the Allied press. Composed by German students who had left their university studies in order to participate in World War I, these letters reveal the struggles and hardships that all soldiers face. The stark brutality and surrealism of war are revealed as young men from Germany describe their bitter combat and occasional camaraderie with soldiers from many nations, including France, Great Britain, and Russia. Like its companion volume, War Letters of Fallen Englishmen, these letters were carefully selected for their depth of perception, the intensity of their descriptions, and their messages to future generations. "Should these letters help towards the establishment of justice and better understanding between nations," the editor reflects in his introduction, "their deaths will not have been in vain." This edition contains a new foreword by the distinguished World War I historian Jay Winter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, Luther College history professor Chellis N. Evanson published "Scuttlebutt," a newsletter to circulate news and addresses for the former Luther students who were in the service. In return, former students sent information about their whereabouts and, to the extent that military censorship would allow, descriptions of their activities. This edition of letters and photographs from that collection provides a unique insight into the lives of men and women serving in World War II. Under normal circumstances, they would have been living the lives of 'typical' college students: studying for exams, preparing for a ball game, hoping for an extra dish of ice cream at the "Boarding Club," or trying to build up courage to ask the woman next to them in class out on a date. Instead, they were diving for cover from German artillery barrages, or attempting to shoot down Japanese kamikaze pilots before their own ship was destroyed. The letters in this collection provide a glimpse of what these men and women experienced in World War II. For example, this report from Italy: "I have had a few shells land around me, but no harm was done. In fact I got so brave once I had to look out just to see where they were bursting, I got the look but another whistling Joe told me to get back where I belong. Couldn't say I was scared, I guess I just stopped living for awhile. I kept thinking of room 88 in Larsen and how nice it would be to be back there. I hope that day isn't too far away. Don 'Piecrust' Strom Marvin G. Slind, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of History at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. His specialty is modern European history, focusing primarily on Scandinavia and Germany.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Correspondence of the Daily News: Continued From the Recapture of Orleans by the German to the Peace, Edited With Notes and Comments Forming a Continuous History of the War Between Germany and France The Letters composing this volume were written and published in continuation of those collected in the volume entitled "War Correspondence of the Daily News," issued last December. After the fall of Strasburg and Metz, the interest of the war was more than ever concentrated upon and around Paris, and the operations of the French armies, with their successes and misfortunes, were estimated with reference to the hope of relieving the capital. In the present volume the story of the war is resumed at the recapture of Orleans by the Germans, after battles that effaced advantages which had seemed for a time the presage of ultimate victory for the French, and it is continued to the conclusion of a peace crowned by the occupation of Paris. The brilliant triumph of the Germans, and its influence upon civilization, have yet to be tested by time, which, it may be hoped, will heal the wounds inflicted on France. Our task has been, not to anticipate the verdict of history, but to group a series of life-like pictures of some of the greatest events of this age. Book excerpt: In 1998, Andrew Carroll founded the Legacy Project, with the goal of remembering Americans who have served their nation and preserving their letters for posterity. Since then, over 50,000 letters have poured in from around the country. Nearly two hundred of them comprise this amazing collection -- including never-before-published letters that appear in the new afterword. Here are letters from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf war, Somalia, and Bosnia -- dramatic eyewitness accounts from the front lines, poignant expressions of love for family and country, insightful reflections on the nature of warfare. Amid the voices of common soldiers, marines, airmen, sailors, nurses, journalists, spies, and chaplains are letters by such legendary figures as Gen. William T. Sherman, Clara Barton, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernie Pyle, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Julia Child, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, and Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Sr. Collected in War Letters, they are an astonishing historical record, a powerful tribute to those who fought, and a celebration of the enduring power of letters.

Book excerpt: The dramatic experiences of an ambulance driver in the Great War, told through personal correspondence and photographs. Though the United States was late to enter the Great War, a number of idealistic young Americans wished to take part from the beginning. One of these was Avery Royce Wolf, a highly educated scion of a family in America’s burgeoning industrial heartland. Volunteering as an ambulance driver with the French Army in the Verdun sector, Royce sent back a constant stream of highly detailed letters describing the experience of frontline combat, as well as comments on strategy, the country he encountered, and the Allies’ prospects for success. This treasure trove of brilliant letters, only recently discovered, is accompanied by several albums worth of rare, high-quality photos depicting aspects of the Great War in France never previously published. Full of action, including the suspense and terror of the Ludendorff Offensive, and interesting firsthand analyses, such as comparing French and German trench works, Letters from Verdun brings the reader amazingly close to the frontlines of the Great War.

This collection in no way represents an exhaustive record of the Army's months in France, but it is certainly worthy of serious consideration and thoughtful review by students of military history and strategy and will serve as a useful jumping off point for any earnest scholarship on the war. --from Foreword by William A Stofft.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
