Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Condition of Kentucky in 1825: Reprinted From the Richmond Enquirer The letters, reprinted in the present volume, appeared in the Richmond Enquirer, April 5, 8, 12, 19, 26, 29, May 3, 6, 1825. At the head of each letter is the statement Communicated for the Enquirer. The letters are all unsigned, and it has not been possible to establish the identity of the author. He was certainly a Virginian, but apparently not a resident of Richmond. In one instance only does he give a clue to his pro fession. In his description of his visit to the Transylvania University at Lexington, he speaks of attending the lectures on medical jurispru dence with profit, since they were suited to his vocation. He may have been a member of the Virginia General Assembly, for he writes with knowledge and pride of the good order and Roman dignity of the Virginia Senate. In his account of the political condition of Kentucky of the time he does not miss the opportunity to inti mate that the woes of which he speaks may be due to universal suffrage. A vigorous agitation had been going on for some years in Virginia for the purpose of calling a convention to adopt a new constitution. Among the changes demanded by some was the abandonment of freehold for universal suffrage. The letters reprinted in this volume constitute a very able argument against universal suffrage, though it does not appear that they were written with the distinct purpose of opposing this particular feature of the convention propaganda. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outspoken New England urbanite Horace Holley (1781–1827) was an unlikely choice to become the president of Transylvania University—the first college established west of the Allegheny Mountains. Many Kentuckians doubted his leadership abilities, some questioned his Unitarian beliefs, and others simply found him arrogant and elitist. Nevertheless, Holley ushered in a period of sustained educational and cultural growth at Transylvania, and the university received national attention for its scientifically progressive and liberal curriculum. The resulting influx of wealthy students and celebrated faculty—including Constantine Samuel Rafinesque—lent Lexington, Kentucky, a distinguished atmosphere and gave rise to the city's image as the "Athens of the West." In this definitive biography, James P. Cousins offers fresh perspectives on a seminal yet controversial figure in American religious history and educational life. The son of a prosperous New England merchant family, Holley studied at Yale University before serving as a minister. He achieved national acclaim as an intellectual and self-appointed critic of higher education before accepting the position at Transylvania. His clashes with political and community leaders, however, ultimately led him to resign in 1827, and his untimely death later that year cut short a promising career. Drawing upon a wealth of previously used and newly uncovered primary sources, Cousins analyzes the profound influence of westward expansion on social progress and education that transpired during Holley's tenure. This engaging book not only illuminates the life and work of an important yet overlooked figure, but makes a valuable contribution to the history of education in the early American Republic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Kentucky Tragedy" was early America's best known true crime story. In 1825, Jereboam O. Beauchamp assassinated Kentucky attorney general Solomon P. Sharp. The murder, trial, conviction, and execution of the killer, as well as the suicide of his wife, Anna Cooke Beauchamp -- fascinated Americans. The episode became the basis of dozens of novels and plays composed by some of the country's most esteemed literary talents, among them Edgar Allan Poe and William Gilmore Simms. In Murder and Madness, Matthew G. Schoenbachler peels away two centuries of myth to provide a more accurate account of the murder. Schoenbachler also reveals how Jereboam and Anna Beauchamp shaped the meaning and memory of the event by manipulating romantic ideals at the heart of early American society. Concocting a story in which Solomon Sharp had seduced and abandoned Anna, the couple transformed a sordid murder -- committed because the Beauchamps believed Sharp to be spreading a rumor that Anna had had an affair with a family slave -- into a maudlin tale of feminine virtue assailed, honor asserted, and a young rebel's revenge. Murder and Madness reveals the true story behind the murder and demonstrates enduring influence of Romanticism in early America.
