Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on South America, Vol. 1 of 3: Comprising Travels on the Banks of the Parana and Rio De La Plata We have embodied in these epistles a rapid poli tical review of the River Plate provinces; but we must guard our readers against the supposition that we class our sketch as one rising into history. It has no pretence to rank in that higher walk of literature. We shall be content if future and more able historians than ourselves can find, in our review, some impartial data and some useful hints, on which to found more ample annals of one of the leading republics in the immense territory which once con. But whenever he was roused to anger, his officers instantly drew theirs and presented them to him; or they stood ready to inflict any punishment he might command. We nearly in this way witnessed a terrible scene in our own house. My father gave a dinner to Andres and his "officers, about forty persons. Of course all our wine glasses were in request; and after two or three toasts had been drank, the secretary Mexias gave one, tossing, in defiance of Andresito's prohibition, his glass over 172 A TOAST A LA ESPANOLA. his shoulder. His example was immediately followed by about a dozen more gentlemen; and no doubt every glass on the table would have shared the same fate, had not the general sprung to his feet and commanded them at their peril to break another. The secretary, whose courage had risen with his wine, seemed disposed to rebel, on which high words ensued. The general however exclaimed, ' Si quiebras otra copa, yo te quebrare el Alma, '--'If you break another glass, I will break your pate;' upon which the officers instantly drew their swords, and surrounded Andres. Mexias, I suppose, thought it high time to submit, for he sat down, and continued in a sulky mood for the rest of the day. Though not present, we were within hearing, and not a little alarmed at the uproar; but it subsided the moment Mexias sat down, and the rest of the evening passed off quietly enough. Andres expressed himself as much pleased with the entertainment, and particularly with the plom puddin Ingles, of which national dish we had five or six samples at the table, all of which disappeared. One of the officers, on some being placed before This was the Spanish mode of drinking a toast " with all the honours." MEXIAS ASSASSINATED. 173...

We succeeded so well that towards the end of August we found we had as much produce at Goya and Corrientes as would load our own vessel, the San Jose, as well as our friend Don Agustin Saen'z polacca, which we chartered for the purpose. Book excerpt: The sources in this volume focus on Great Britain’s moral, financial, and diplomatic interventions and ambitions in Latin America. It begins during the wars of independence spanning 1810-1825, when Foreign Secretary George Canning prematurely declared, "Spanish America is free; and if we do not mismanage our affairs sadly, she is English." The independence movements of the former Spanish and Portuguese colonies, as well as their ancient past, inspired Romantic writers such as Anna Letitia Barbauld and spurred British military support and political debate, as attested by mercenary Richard Vowell’s Campaigns and Cruises in Venezuela and James Mill's "Emancipation of Spanish America."

Book excerpt: Personal Narrative of Travels to the Equinoctial Regions of America, during the years 1799-1804 is a three-volume account of an expedition taken from Spain to South America by naturalists Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland. The authors visited Venezuela, Cuba, Andes, Mexico and USA where they collected the material and made extensive notes. Their joint effort to record a memoir of this great expedition is quite interesting and valuable because it contain specific documentation of their scientific observations, but it also presents an intriguing and romantic work with many poetic descriptions of nature and the people who lived in the areas he visited.

Later in 1981, when I was a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge and renewed my contacts with Christ’s College, my friend and colleague David Coombe, a Fellow of Christ’s College, informed me that a collection of letters of Charles Darwin had just been - covered in the Library storeroom, underneath the College. I had always maintained an interest in Charles Darwin, from the early age of thirteen, when I had rst read his books, with I might say some dif culty! This collection was the 155 letters of Charles Darwin to his second cousin William Darwin Fox, which had been given in trust to the College, in 1909, by members of the Fox family at the time of the Darwin Centenary celebrations. I was allowed access to these 155 letters and at that time made my own tr- scriptions. It seemed to me that this was a magni cent account of the lives of two naturalists of the nineteenth century, starting at the time that they were at Christ’s together, in 1828, and going to 1880 when W D Fox died – just two years short of the death of Charles Darwin in 1882. Of course this valuable resource had not gone unnoticed before. Darwin’s son, Francis Darwin had been given the letters in the 1880s, when he was preparing his Life and Letters of Charles Darwin in 3 volumes.

Book excerpt: Historical and Descriptive Narrative of Twenty Years' Residence in South America in three volumes is a travel narrative by a British explorer William Bennet Stevenson who spent many years in Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia, in early 19th century. About 1803 he landed on the coast of Chile, which at that time was inhabited only by indigenous people. His intention was to travel through the country, but he was detained a prisoner. He was conveyed to Peru, where he was permitted to reside in the town and to make excursions into the adjoining provinces. On the outbreak of the Ecuadorian War of Independence, Stevenson joined the insurgents, and he also served in the Chilean War of Independence, taking part in many naval operations. Upon his return he published the results of his American experiences. His goal in writing this book was to bring European readers closer to the distant continent which has undergone remarkable changes in its political and religious life. The book is of great value for the period of the Spanish American wars of independence, and he used his unique opportunities for observation to advantage.
