Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of John Hay and Extracts From Diary, 1908, Vol. 2 I wish you could have been here and eaten grapes with me during the past week. They are of a most exquisite flavor and sweeter than I have ever seen them anywhere in the world. Especially the much abused Catawba, which people were thinking of ploughing up, has nobly asserted itself and produced a superb vintage. We are now through, and ready for the frost when it comes. The weather is lovely. The great river is wrapped at daybreak in a morning gown of fog, but soon brightens up, and the light has a regular spree on the many-colored foliage of the hills and the islands. I am doing nothing and find it easy to take. I walk a great deal and eat for several. I have gained two pounds in weight the first week. I have a very cordial letter from H - saying he thinks my decision the best one; that the publication in the Magazine will not hurt the book, but will be a positive advantage to it. So my mind is at rest on that score. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of John Hay and Extracts From Diary, 1908, Vol. 3 Galahad series, with new pleasure and admiration each time. You have done the job, old man! You have made your unquestionable place in the art of this generation. And the Shakespeare drawings! I saw a few of them at a picture-shop here. They are bully, as my children say in a language which I used to think hideous, but which seems to be current now in the best society. Whom do they belong to? and are they ever to be accessible to the public? I covet some of them; my fingers itch for them. I have the book, of course, and take great comfort in it, but the drawings have a grandiosity and style that are extremely captivating. We thought of you when we were in Italy very often - particularly in the Giusti Gardens at Verona. We have a dullish winter here in spite of the glut of news and sensations in the papers. S - and G are both here, taking the world by the collar and making it behave. We have to open and shut doors, as in an old-fashioned farce, to keep them from meeting each other. Book excerpt: Now, perhaps, only those enmeshed in 19th-century American history know his name; but when John Hay died in 1905, he was one of the most famous men in the world. And one of the most highly regarded. Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary during the Civil War, thereafter as a popular poet, novelist, newspaper editor, highly esteemed historian and biographer, diplomat, businessman, and secretary of state until his death, Hay enjoyed remarkable success in public and private life. In John Hay, Friend of Giants, Philip McFarland presents both the intimate story of Hay’s relationship with four prominent figures of his age and an insightful history of the United States from the 1850s to the turn of the century. Hay’s life and extraordinary friendships provide a window into the politics, literature, society, and diplomacy of this remarkable era of American expansion.
