This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to Teachers and Other Papers of the Hour It is, doubtless, needless to say that the papers here collected are frankly journalistic, frankly propaganda. They were written during wartime, and while directed to the internal condition rather than the external affairs of our nation, they are influenced and inspired by the omnipresent fact of the international catastrophe. The problem with which they deal is the problem of reconstruction where it is most fundamental, and that is in the education of the American citizen; for the economic and social difficulties which today we face can find no lasting solution except it be in a state of mind, a national state of mind, which shall unite our citizenship in a unified purpose; and this it is the business of education to define and achieve. The issue is sufficiently important to demand journalism, to justify propaganda. Most of the papers here reprinted were originally addressed to the people of Nebraska, but they deal with problems which are local and national in the same sense, so that their particular context ought not to prevent their general consideration. The title series was first published in the Nebraska State Journal (Lincoln), April-July, 1918, under the heading, "Letters to Nebraska Teachers." Every good teacher knows this and spends many an hour which can be ill spared in the search for material which will spur pupils to expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Etta Jones was not a World War II soldier or a war time spy. She was a school teacher whose life changed forever on that Sunday morning in June 1942 when the Japanese military invaded Attu Island and Etta became a prisoner of war. Etta and her sister moved to the Territory of Alaska in 1922. She planned to stay only one year as a vacation, but this 40 something year old nurse from back east met Foster Jones and fell in love. They married and for nearly twenty years they lived, worked and taught in remote Athabascan, Alutiiq, Yup’ik and Aleut villages where they were the only outsiders. Their last assignment was Attu. After the invasion, Etta became a prisoner of war and spent 39 months in Japanese POW sites located in Yokohama and Totsuka. She was the first female Caucasian taken prisoner by a foreign enemy on the North American Continent since the War of 1812, and she was the first American female released by the Japanese at the end of World War II. Using descriptive letters that she penned herself, her unpublished manuscript, historical documents and personal interviews with key people who were involved with events as they happened, her extraordinary story is told for the first time in this book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Young Student, in the First Stage of a Liberal Education The history of this volume may he briefly told. Considerable acquaintance with young students led the author to believe, that such a book was greatly needed. As he knew of no person who had a work of this kind in view, he resolved to undertake one himself. He would barely remark, in regard to the letters which make up this volume, that although they are addressed to a pious student who has just commenced an academical course, with the Christian ministry in view, they contain many suggestions which, he hopes, will not be found unprofitable to young students of any description. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to Persons in the World, Vol. 6 Many besides myself will have heard with great satisfaction that it is in contemplation to prepare a complete and careful English translation of the works of St. Francis de Sales. The position of St. Francis, as a teacher of the Universal Church, has long been assured. But the recent Pontifical decree, which has enrolled him among those who are formally called Doctors of the Church, has directed the attention of all devout Christians to a more exhaustive examination of all that he has written. Those who use the English tongue may well desire to have an adequate English edition of a Saint who is one of the great devotional teachers of the Church during the time which has elapsed since the Council of Trent. Pipe It is for them, for her old pupils and for their children, that the book has been written, and from the larger public I would venture to ask indulgence for its shortcomings, on the ground that it is primarily intended for those who knew and loved her, and therefore contains details and reiterations which they will pardon, and it may be, even value. Miss Pipe was my friend for forty years, and it is to this fact that I owe the request of her executors that I should undertake the editing of her Life and Letters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain School-Teacher There had once been a path along the backbone of the mountain, but the wilderness had undertaken to remove it, and had almost succeeded. The wind had gathered bits of moss, twigs and dead stuff into the slight depression. The great hickories had covered it with leaves. The rain had packed it. There was no longer a path, only an open way between the trees running down the gentle slope of the ridge to the mountain road.
