Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From East Africa, 1895-1897 That was Thursday. Shall I draw a veil over the succeeding three days? N 0, let me proceed with a plain tale. The night was fairly good, and next morning I got up quite spry, and went down to breakfast, and then settled down in a good solid chair that happened to be standing in a sheltered spot. It was wet and very windy, and I was glad to keep still. In that chair I sat for hours, and it got rougher and rougher, and I was listening to a succession of crashes and clashes down below when suddenly there came a louder crash near at hand, and to my great astonishment I found myself and chair ung prostrate on to the deck, where we lay helpless till a dozen willing hands picked us up and put me in the chair, and tied chair to rail, and we kept steady for some hours more. When it grew dusk I feebly asked if some one would take me to bed. Mr. C. Manfully did his best, but I was so utterly ofinmc'icfitzg that he had to hand me over to the captain, who half carried me downstairs, where I have remained ever since! Isn't this a disgraceful state of things? The odd part is that, i have not been sick once, and hardly even felt sick it is only this ridiculous form of ma! De mer, being so weak and paralysed that one can hardly move. However, my excuse is that the weather has been real bad - even the first officer admitted that it was, and lots of other people keep below too, so I am not alonein disgrace. It's going to be fine to morrow, and after Port Said it's never rough, so they say, and I shall be as lively as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Far East The letters here republished consist of contributions written for the Westminster Gazette during a brief visit to China and Japan in the summer and autumn of 1906, together with some additions. I had travelled before in Kashgaria and the frontier pro vinces of China, reaching them by crossing Asia, but this was my first visit to the coast and the better known provinces of the empire. The main object of my journey was to obtain some practical know ledge of the languages and creeds of the Far East, and, in particular, to study the curious development which Buddhism has undergone in those countries for it is difficult to form a correct and comprehensive idea of the part which this religion has played in the world by the mere study of Sanskrit and Pali litera ture. I trust that I may some day be able to publish the result of these and other investigations in a con nected form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Citizen of the World to His Friends in the East Citizen OF the world.[the idea of depicting the manners of one's own country under the disguise of a foreign observer seems to have originated in France. The Turkish Spy led the way, and acquired extensive popularity all over Europe this was followed by Peruvian Letters, ' Persian Letters, ' Chinese Letters, ' and others, all with greater or lem credit, and ofi'ering the fairest encouragement to an English writer to pursue the same track. The genius, the humor, the good-nature of Goldsmith, seemed to fit him for the task: he had, moreover, himself been a traveller, and at the time when these Letters were produced, no doubt many circumstances in English life and manners appeared to him with somewhat of the novelty which he ascribes to the impressions of his imaginary oriental. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From China and Some Eastern Sketches The aim of "Letters from China" is to convey an impression of life in the Far East as it appeared to an individual for whom the serious side of any subject has never possessed so powerful an attraction as has its humorous aspect. I offer this explanation in the hope that it may be regarded, by indulgent readers, as a plea in extenuation of the book's many faults. The stories are mainly incidents within the actual experience of the writer, who has attempted to portray them in their own Oriental colouring rather than by means of precisive literary expression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the East, Vol. 1 of 2: Written During a Recent Tour Through Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, the Holy Land, Syria, and Greece Looks of kindness and almost fraternal feeling which they cast on each other. The poor man is often seen at this period to take the hand, and kiss the cheek of the rich and haughty, who re turns the salutation as to his equal, a brother in the glorious faith of their Prophet, a cc-heir to the privileges of his Paradise. Delight was pictured in every countenance; every one put on his finest apparel, and the sound of music was heard on every side, mingled with songs in honour of their religion. We are too apt to divest the Turks of domestic virtues, yet one cannot but be struck with their extreme fond ness for their children; beautiful beings they often are, beyond those of any other country. In Damascus, I have many times stopped in the streets to gaze at children of six or eight years of age, whose extreme loveliness it was impossible not to admire - and afterwards in Tripolitza, I cannot forget how the love of a Turkish lady to her two youngest children risked the murder of herself, her son and daughter, and her most. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Europe and the East: During the Years 1859 and 1860 The following unpretending letters were written from the countries and places they imperfectly describe, during my recent tour in Europe, Asia, and Africa for the benefit and amusement of some of my personal friends, without enter taining the most distant idea of publishing them in the present form; had such been my purpose I should have bestowed more care upon their preparation. But being a simple statement of facts made from personal observations, Without drawing upon imagination or exaggerating in any particular, hope they may interest, and to some extent entertain, at least those for whom they were originally penned, at whose earnest solicitations I have been induced to give them publicity. I should here state that I have no pretensions whatever to authorship, nor do I expect to add anything to the knowledge and literature of the day, couse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel-Letters From Palestine and the East Every land is holy since God made, and is in and over every land. Still there is a sense in which only one land is holy. And that because its mountains and plains and cities, its fields, flocks and flowers, its peoples and laws and cus toms, are woven into every part of our Bible; because of those holy ones who lived and wrought there for us; and holy because of the divers times and places and manners in which God has here revealed Himself to His people, and through chosen vessels to all the world. But most of all, holy because of that Holy One who here had His cradle and home, His workshop, pulpit and school room, His Golgotha and Olivet. And because of the future when that strangest of people shall turn unto Christ, and when in stead of the ancient city of Jerusalem, now in ruins, the New Jerusalem, which furnished the last and perhaps the most beautiful picture of heaven, shall be let down out of heaven, may Palestine truly be called the Holy Land. To visit this land, walk its ways, commune with its choicest souls in their old homes and in the light of the Land to read the Book, is a privilege to be coveted by any one, and particularly by one whose sole work is to preach the Gospel here revealed. In the good providence of God this privilege came to the writer, and after due provision for home and church, with grateful heart, he left home on March the third for New York.
