Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From My Home in India Strained to the utmost - and she could not see the way clear to consent. Months elapsed, with out further word between us, then we met again and she offered to do the work - a rendering back to her Lord for what gift He had given. I passed over my matter into her charge, confident that if it was His plan He would direct her in the fulfilling of the expressed desire in compiling and arranging; and rest ing sure that His blessing would follow her throughout her task. That task is now com pleted; the letters, into which form Mrs. Rogers chose to put the story, are ready to be sent forth. I send them in the Lord's name, be lieving He has directed in everything in bring ing out the book. Into His hands I place it, to use for His glory. All gains from it go to further His cause. Thrice blest am I to have had some small share in spreading abroad His love. Matilda F. Churchill. Toronto, Canada, July, 1916. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From India It does not often fall to the lot of a teacher to preface a volume written in memory of a pupil. Many days and nights have gone since Dr. Stratton's untimely death. In the language of the little Brahmana legend about Yami, the Hindu Eve, who will not forget her dead Adam, Yama, until the gods create night to alternate with day: ''Tis days and nights that cause men to forget sorrows.' The regret is now softened for all of Dr. Stratton's friends by the wise provision of Nature. What he left behind is good every way: the printed and written record of his scholar's work, excellent in accomplishment and full of promise for the future; the uplifting and inspiring influence he exercised upon his devoted pupils; the memory of his own disciplehood, which always helped the teacher as much as it benefited himself. Most of all, the memory of a life which was eager to perform high tasks, yet altogether ungrasping; full of the doubt and self-criticism that go with high ideals, but not at all restless or distracted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Received by the East India Company From Its Servants in the East, Vol. 1: Transcribed From the 'Original Correspondence' Series of the India Office Records Have been made in the form of its production, the principal being that it has been thought advisable, firstly, to modernise the spelling of the manuscripts (except as regards place names, which are given as in the original, but with the modern name within brackets), and, secondly, to refrain from any attempt at annotation, the introduction and glossary having rendered the latter unnecessary. The order in which the several documents appear in the original volumes has been followed, but it will be observed that those are not always in strict sequence of date. As regards dates occurring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From India and the Crimea The memoir of your late dear husband's life will not only be much prized by his many friends, bring ing back many recollections of the past, but I feel sure it will be interesting reading to many who had not the privilege of his acquaintance, as he was not only clever, but a cheery, pleasant companion, and a great favourite of all with whom he came in contact. Above all, he was very fond of his profession, and availed himself of any opportunity that offered to note what was taking place around him. He was an honour to his profession in every sense of the word. We were all very sorry when he left. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Madras: During the Years 1836-1839 The public attention has of late been so much directed to our East Indian possessions, that any particulars concerning that portion of the globe may probably find a welcome from the general reader. It is under this impression that the following Letters are offered to the public. They were written during the years 1836, 37, 38, and 39, by a young married lady, who had accompanied her husband to Madras for the first time, and they are (with the necessary omission of family details) printed verbatim from the originals. This will account for some abruptness of transition, and also for a colloquial familiarity of style, which might easily have been remedied if it had not been thought more advisable to give the correspondence in its genuine unsophisticated state. Those who open the volume with an expectation of finding details relative to the wars and vicissitudes which have lately excited universal interest will be disappointed, as the writer quitted India in 1840. Neither did she devote much attention to public affairs, though she occasionally notices the apprehensions and opinions that were prevalent at the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial India: Letters From the East At half-past four in the morning, while the stars made the city lights seem little more than candle flames, and the bright moon made the harbour signals mere spots of glowing red, I saw Bombay, a dark, low mass against the sky, for the first time. It was the one still hour of my voyage, for our journey had been a long conversation, occasionally interrupted by short nights of rest in the flattered Mediterranean, the hot Red Sea, and the sleepless Indian Ocean, by picturesque delays at Port Said, the Suez Canal, and Aden. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From India and China During the Years 1854-1858 Robert William Danvers, the writer of the following letters, was the third son of Frederick Dawes and Charlotte Maria Danvers and was born on July 30th, 1833. He was delicate in his childhood, but he grew up to be a strong, healthy youth, and developed into a fine, well-grown man, attractive in appearance and engaging in manners. He was brought up with the idea of taking Holy Orders, and in 1850 went to King's College, London, for the purpose of pursuing his studies and going through a course of theology in view to his ultimate ordination. He had not been there long, however, before a change came over his feelings, and he eventually expressed a strong preference in favour of the army as a profession. His parents were at first disappointed at his choice, but seeing that his mind was made up offered no opposition, and the nomination to a direct cadetship in the Indian army was given to him by Mr. Russell Ellice, then Chairman of the East India Company.
