Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Father to His Sons in College I acknowledge, also, I am not without some hope that another benefit may result from the preparation of this manual. I am persuaded that some, at least, of the young men whose disorders in college degrade themselves, distress their parents, and give trouble to their teachers, are betrayed into their ill conduct more by thoughtlessness, by inexperience, and by ignorance of the world, than by any fixed purpose of insubordi nation or rebellion. They become delinquents more from inadvertence and juvenile folly, than from settled design; and, of course, what they chiefly need is to have their attention called to a variety of subjects, connected with college discipline, and college duty, in regard to which their views and habits are at present erroneous, chiefly because they have never seriously considered them; and have never been taught better. The benefit of such young men is not only earnestly to be desired, but their case is far from being hopeless. There is every prospect that discreet and well directed efforts may make an impression conducive to their per manent good. If therefore, while I put you on your guard against the company and the influence of such young men, as long as their present habits continue, they should be disposed to take the friendly hints here dropped, and to consider their ways, we may all have reason to rejoice together that this labour of sin cere good will has not been in vain.
