Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to His Son Lucien Lucien Pissarro was twenty years old when he left his parents' home to try his luck in England. Never before had a son of Camille Pissarro been separated from him, and the father was concerned that his eldest should not lack for affectionate advice. In his almost daily letters the impressionist painter drew on his vast experience in life and art to encourage, chide and solace the young Lucien. It was no easy matter for Lumen, shy and given to dreaming as he was, to leave the house of his parents at Osny near Pontoise, where his brothers and his sister spent their carefree youth in the fields and meadows while their father noted with unconcealed joy the capacities for observation and expression which he found in each of them. Lucien himself had begun to draw at a very early age and, when sent to work in Paris for a firm merchandising English fabrics, he spent the evenings with his friend Louis Hayet making drawings in the cafés and music halls. His mother, who knew only too well the sufferings artists have to endure, had wanted at all costs to prevent her eldest son from choosing his father's profession. However, the young man's employer soon informed the parents that their boy, although in other respects a fine fellow, would never make good in business. After this, Lucien got a job working with hand-made plates for color impressions. His parents finally decided, by the end of 1882, to send him to England to learn the language. In London he found a position with a music publisher, but continued to paint and draw. First he lived at the home of his uncle, Phineas Isaacson, whose wife was the half-sister of Camille Pissarro. Later he took a studio, gave drawing lessons and devoted himself mostly to the art of wood engraving. Lucien Pissarro often came to France to spend months at a time with his family, which meanwhile had settled in Eragny. But even during these sojourns in France his correspondence with his father was not interrupted. For almost every month Camille Pis sarro went to Paris for a few days to see dealers and collectors, to take in the new exhibitions, to make purchases and to visit his friends. At such times he wrote his son to inform him about every thing. There were also occasions when Lucien himself undertook to go to the capital. His father, thus enabled to continue his work, discussed with him by mail the paintings he was working on at Eragny and sent him news of the children and their mother. This correspondence, which began in 1885 and stopped only with the death of Camille Pissarro twenty years later, was religiously preserved by Lucien. Book excerpt: Lucien is not a novel about love as much as it is a novel about the pain traveling through the memory exhausted from reading the inheritance of ages. It is a dialogue between the mind and the heart, a struggle between the soul and the body, a victory for the on-paper ink in creating characters that mimic our interiors by asking questions and answering them through the perspective of personal knowledge that may be right or wrong

Book excerpt: By the end of the nineteenth century, a mode of painting captured instantaneity had come to be seen as an appropriate and characteristically Impressionist means of depictin its subject, when that subject was understood to be our variable perception in nature. In May of 1895, however, capriciously it seemed to some, to the facade of a Gothic cathedral. Struck by the curious choice a medieval monument as subject matter, critics, used to about instantaneity, continued to lay emphasis on a theme of temporality, and this was addressed in two but related ways. First, there was the matter of perception - the temporality that is involved in engaging visually with near impenetrable surfaces of individual canvases...

Here, with the replies of his painter son Lucien, the world of post-William Morris London appears to complement Camille's Paris. Lucien Pissarro was principally engaged after 1890 with his Eragny Press productions in London. His letters to Camille include technical discussions for the translation of drawings, sometimes by his father, to woodblocks engraved by Lucien, together with Lucien's reactions to his father's comments on work, art trends, personalities, and his own struggles for recognition and financial independence. In sum this substantial collection of letters, published in the original French, with extensive notes and illustrations, offers a unique source for anyone interested in English "aesthetic" life toward the end of the nineteenth century. Lucien Pissarro's observations on many of the leading artistic figures of his time, on exhibitions, publications, sales, politics, and a range of other matters, contain much important material that is not to be found elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ted Shawn (1891-1972) is the self-proclaimed "Father of American Dance" who helped to transform dance from a national pastime into theatrical art. In the process, he made dancing an acceptable profession for men and taught several generations of dancers, some of whom went on to become legendary choreographers and performers in their own right, most notably his protégés Martha Graham, Louise Brooks, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman. Shawn tried for many years and with great frustration to tell the story of his life's work in terms of its social and artistic value, but struggled, owing to the fact that he was homosexual, a fact known only within his inner circle of friends. Unwilling to disturb the meticulously narrated account of his paternal exceptionalism, he remained closeted, but scrupulously archived his journals, correspondence, programs, photographs, and motion pictures of his dances, anticipating that the full significance of his life, writing, and dances would reveal itself in time. Ted Shawn: His Life, Writings, and Dances is the first critical biography of the dance legend, offering an in-depth look into Shawn's pioneering role in the formation of the first American modern dance company and school, the first all-male dance company, and Jacob's Pillow, the internationally renowned dance festival and school located in the Berkshires. The book explores Shawn's writings and dances in relation to emerging discourses of modernism, eugenics and social evolution, revealing an untold story about the ways that Shawn's homosexuality informed his choreographic vision. The book also elucidates the influences of contemporary writers who were leading a radical movement to depathologize homosexuality, such as the British eugenicist Havelock Ellis and sexologist Alfred Kinsey, and conversely, how their revolutionary ideas about sexuality were shaped by Shawn's modernism.
