Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic of the Reign of Henry VIII, Vol. 1: Preserved in the Public Record Office, the British Museum and Elsewhere A historical introduction to the documents described in this volume is supplied by Brewer's preface, reprinted in Part 3. It may, however, be useful to state briefly that the period embraced extends from Henry viii.'s accession on the 2lst April 1509, to the end of the year 1514, when peace with France was supposed to be finally secured by the marriage of the King's sister Mary to Louis XII. At the beginning of the new reign, war with France was inevitable. The English nation expected of their King that he should prove his title to the throne by recovering the realm of France which their grandfathers shed their blood to win-wand lost. Preparations for the war guided Henry's policy until the actual outbreak of hostilities in the spring of 1513 and a war followed in which the English leaders seem to have had no other aim than to display their individual prowess and were only saved from disaster by the folly of their adversaries at Guinegate and Flodden. In the following summer the war was ended by Wolsey' s inauguration of the new policy of an alliance with France, for which the people of England never forgave him. 'through it all moved the sinister figures of the King's allies, Ferdinand the Catholic, darkly intent on thwarting his son-in-law's aims, and the needy Emperor Maximilian thirsting for his money. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royal and Historical Letters, Vol. 1: During the Reign of Henry the Fourth, King of England and of France, and Lord of Ireland Among the numerous Materials available for the History of Great Britain during the Middle Ages, widely differing as they do both in their nature and their importance, a high position must be assigned to the Letters of Sovereigns and other persons eminent in Church and State. "History," writes Sir Henry Ellis, "confined to the greater events which it records, is usually certain and true; but in the colouring which writers give it, and which they are proud to call the philosophy of History, it is too frequently erroneous. Characters are drawn by those who could not know the persons they describe; facts are imperceptibly perverted to the uses of party; and events which owe their origin to the simplest are often traced back to the remotest causes. Thus circumstanced, History, however comprehensive in its view, partakes too much of the embellished nature of Romance." How applicable all this is to English Histories which have been written in recent years need scarcely be pointed out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, of the Reign of Henry VIII, Vol. 12: Preserved in the Public Record Office, the British Museum, and Elsewhere in England; Part I If Aske was not really satisfied of the King's good faith he certainly acted like one who was so. But it was by no means clear that he could inspire such confidence in others. In Lancashire it was reported that lord Derby had kept a great Christmas at Lathom, taking care to repair the walls and fortify the place with guns and shot, and that lord Monteagle had ridden to him in Christmas week, warning him that all the country about Blackburn, Kendal, and Craven would rise at once on any attempt to turn out the monks Of Sawley. Further North the earl of Cumberland and the commons distrusted each other, and Cumberland's son, lord Clifford, had to make a hasty retreat from Giggleswick where he went to hear a mass. Moreover the bailiff of Kendal had barely escaped with his life, when he attempted to read the King's pardon in Kendal church on New Year's Eve.2 Why should the commons require a pardon? They felt they had done no wrong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If the amicable relations of Francis and the Emperor were ripening so fast, the tardy vengeance of outraged Christendom might fall upon him yet at no very distant date. But, as we have seen, he had got his parliament well in hand. He had roused the loyalty of his own subjects, by musters and arrays, to resist foreign invasion. He might be trying to form an anglo-protestant league abroad, but he had convinced everyone at home that orthodoxy had nothing to fear from a prince who passed such severe laws against heresy. The forced surrenders of monasteries were still going on, and the people might not approve; but they saw no reason to desert their sovereign, especially when there was' no one to take the lead against him. So that at home he was tolerably safe if he could only ward off danger from abroad, and weaken the hands of his possible future adversaries. For the means of doing so, he could only look to diplomacy, intrigue, and the chapter of accidents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
