Book excerpt: The letters that passed between a young unknown provincial journalist and a famous Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet over a period of two years give a fascinating sidelight on 1880s literary life. They illuminate the last years of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the start of a career that was to make Hall Caine the most popular and best-selling romantic novelist of his time. The value and interest of this book lie in the fact that both sides of a correspondence are printed here together for the first time. It should appeal both to specialists and the general reader. The book contains sixteen plates.

Download or read book Hall Caine written by Vivien Allen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first full biography of the Victorian romantic novelist Hall Caine traces his life from childhood in Liverpool, through his time as 'housemate' to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and association with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood to his triumphant career as a popular novelist. Caine, a swashbuckling character who might have figured in one of his own novels, wrote fifteen novels and many non-fiction works. Vivien Allen has been able to take advantage of Caine's family papers and letters and, living in the Isle of Man, is well placed to write about this half-forgotten author of Manx descent who made his home there from 1896 until his death in 1931. The book contains letters to Hall Caine from the American, Dr Francis Tumblety who has been recently identified as the probable 'Jack the Ripper'. These letters were mentioned in the Channel 4 (UK) documentary 'Jack the Ripper' 1996. Much of the archive material was accessed with the assistance of the New York Public Library and the New York Theatre Museum.

Book Synopsis Representations of Hair in Victorian Literature and Culture by : Galia Ofek
Download or read book Representations of Hair in Victorian Literature and Culture written by Galia Ofek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galia Ofek's wide-ranging study elucidates the historical, artistic, literary, and theoretical meanings of the Victorians' preoccupation with hair. Victorian writers and artists, Ofek argues, had a well-developed awareness of fetishism as an overinvestment of value in a specific body part and were fully cognizant of hair's symbolic resonance and its value as an object of commerce. In particular, they were increasingly alert to the symbolic significance of hairstyling. Among the writers and artists Ofek considers are Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, Margaret Oliphant, Charles Darwin, Anthony Trollope, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Eliza Lynn Linton, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Herbert Spencer, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, and Aubrey Beardsley. By examining fiction, poetry, anthropological and scientific works, newspaper reviews and advertisements, correspondence, jewellery, paintings, and cartoons, Ofek shows how changing patterns of power relations between women and patriarchy are rendered anew when viewed through the lens of Victorian hair codes and imagery during the second half of the nineteenth century.
