Book excerpt: On the Aegina marbles: has sent Smirke a long account of the discovery of the Aegina marbles with a sketch and also sent an account to Canning [neither of these are in the archive]; Canning has offered to assist [re. purchasing them]; there is no intention of dividing them but Foster and Cockerell are prepared to take half the price asked by the Germans [Haller and Link] if the marbles come to England; Knight and Fazakerley have offered to buy the Germans' share [for 2000 pounds] but they want 4000 pounds; Cockerell believes his reputation as one of those who discovered the marbles is what is most important.

Book excerpt: Describes his voyage to Palermo, a place he describes as "destitute of charms either of amusement or instruction"; he has been delayed there by fever; initially he knew no-one, but he gradually made new acquaintances, including Sir Robert Lawrie, Lord William Bentinck and Mrs Campbell, who has given him news of home; he makes reference to the Sicilian character, politics and the strong control of the British, the proposed constitution, the rivalry of the Sicilians and Neopolitans and the appearance of Palermo, "the palaces are mediocre and there is overflow of monstrous and miserable taste"; describes a ceremony that he saw of a novice being introduced to a nunnery; hopes to continue his travels soon with a trip to Segesta and then to Girgenti [Agrigento]; if he is not able to travel on the continent he proposes to end his tour in Athens.
