Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Marion Dakin died in 1974, a bundle of letters was found in her desk -- all in Swedish. Years before she died Marion had given her granddaughter "old family rings" to use for her wedding -- one came from Eric Helsten, or so she thought. Her grandfather Eric Helsten was a tanner who immigrated from Sweden in 1845, initially settling in Haviland Hollow NY and then in Gaylordsville CT. He married another immigrant, Mary Hearty, who came from Ireland in 1848. These letters are from Eric's mother and twelve siblings dating from 1845 until he died in 1903. This is the story of Eric and Mary's life, in the US with the accompanying story of life back home as told through these 86 letters and documents. Included are two chapters with genealogical information on Eric Helsten's maternal and paternal ancestors in Sweden -- including Swedish family names of Alfvars, Bouvin, Chevet, Dandanell, Dubois, Gilljam, Hellsten, Hultman, Krutmeijer, Martin, Österman, Pousette, Robbert, Tillman, Tussin.

Book Synopsis The Fall of Parnell by : F.S.L. Lyons
Download or read book The Fall of Parnell written by F.S.L. Lyons and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was originally published in 1960 no full-length study of the Parnell ‘split’ had been made, despite it being such a landmark in Irish history. The book treats the eleven months between the verdict on the O’Shea divorce case the death of Parnell as a dramatic unity. This was the first modern work to provide a connected account of such neglected episodes as the ‘Boulogne negotiations’ and Parnell’s final campaign in Ireland. The crisis was a crisis for English liberalism as well as Irish nationalism and the author discusses the effects of the catastrophe upon Gladstone and his colleagues. The author obtained access to several valuable collections of private papers in England and Ireland which throw a lot of light upon the actions and opinions of the main participants in this famous tragedy.
Book Synopsis Remembrance of Patients Past by : Geoffrey Reaume
Download or read book Remembrance of Patients Past written by Geoffrey Reaume and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Oh that I had wings I would fly like a dove and be at rest I would fly out of this asylum ....' So wrote Ralph M., a patient at the Toronto Hospital for the Insane from 1889 until his death in 1911. Winston O., another inmate at the Toronto asylum, actually sought to build wings like Ralph so longed for. After crafting violins that he played and building from scratch an automobile he was allowed to drive on the hospital grounds, Winston was reported to be working on the construction of an 'aeroplane'. In Remembrance of Patients Past, historian Geoffrey Reaume chronicles seventy years of daily life at the institution known as 999, the Toronto Hospital for the Insane at 999 Queen Street West. His narrative stretches from 1870 to 1940 and examines such aspects as diagnosis and admission, daily routine and relationships, leisure, patients' labor, family and community responses, and discharge and death. Mental patients were at times abused, and they led lives of tedious monotony that could tend to 'flatten' personality, yet many of these women and men worked hard at institutional jobs for years and decades on end, created their own entertainment, and formed meaningful relationships with other patients and staff. A moving chronicle, the book is also an important argument for flexibility in treatment for mental illnesses and a challenge to the view that traditional mental institutions were of little help to their patients.

Download or read book Curzon written by David Gilmour and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-06-11 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A Superb New Biography . . . A Tragic Story, Brilliantly Told.” —Andrew Roberts, Literary Review George Nathaniel Curzon’s controversial life in public service stretched from the high noon of his country’s empire to the traumatized years following World War I. As viceroy of India under Queen Victoria and foreign secretary under King George V, the obsessive Lord Curzon left his unmistakable mark on the era. David Gilmour’s award-winning book—with a new foreword by the author—is a brilliant assessment of Curzon’s character and achievements, offering a richly dramatic account of the infamous long vendettas, the turbulent friendships, and the passionate, risky love affairs that complicated and enriched his life. Born into the ruling class of what was then the world’s greatest power, Curzon was a fervent believer in British imperialism who spent his life proving he was fit for the task. Often seen as arrogant and tempestuous, he was loathed as much as he was adored, his work disparaged as much as it was admired. In Gilmour’s well-rounded appraisal, Curzon emerges as a complex, tragic figure, a gifted leader who saw his imperial world overshadowed at the dawn of democracy.
