Book Synopsis Let’s Talk About Your Wall by : Carmen Boullosa
Download or read book Let’s Talk About Your Wall written by Carmen Boullosa and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major writers from Mexico weigh in on U.S. immigration policy, from harrowing migrant journeys to immigrant detention to the life beyond the wall Despite the extensive coverage in the U.S. media of the southern border and Donald Trump's proposed wall, most English speakers have had little access to the multitude of perspectives from Mexico on the ongoing crisis. Celebrated novelist Carmen Boullosa (author of Texas and Before) and Alberto Quintero redress this imbalance with this collection of essays—translated into English for the first time—drawing on writing by journalists, novelists, and documentary-makers who are Mexican or based in Mexico. Contributors include the award-winning author Valeria Luiselli, whose Tell Me How It Ends is the go-to book on the child migrant crisis, and the novelist Yuri Herrera, author of the highly acclaimed Signs Preceding the End of the World. Let's Talk About Your Wall uses Trump's wall as a starting point to discuss important questions, including the history of U.S.-Mexican relations, and questions of sovereignty, citizenship, and borders. An essential resource for anyone seeking to form a well-grounded opinion on one of the central issues of our day, Let's Talk About Your Wall provides a fierce and compelling counterpoint to the racist bigotry and irrational fear that consumes the debate over immigration, and a powerful symbol of opposition to exclusion and hate.
Book Synopsis Let's Talk about Death (over Dinner) by : Michael Hebb
Download or read book Let's Talk about Death (over Dinner) written by Michael Hebb and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers of Being Mortal and When Breath Becomes Air, the acclaimed founder of Death over Dinner offers a practical, inspiring guide to life's most difficult yet important conversation. Of the many critical conversations we will all have throughout our lifetime, few are as important as the ones discussing death—and not just the practical considerations, such as DNRs and wills, but what we fear, what we hope, and how we want to be remembered. Yet few of these conversations are actually happening. Inspired by his experience with his own father and countless stories from others who regret not having these conversations, Michael Hebb cofounded Death Over Dinner—an organization that encourages people to pull up a chair, break bread, and really talk about the one thing we all have in common. Death Over Dinner has been one of the most effective end-of-life awareness campaigns to date; in just three years, it has provided the framework and inspiration for more than a hundred thousand dinners focused on having these end-of-life conversations. As Arianna Huffington said, "We are such a fast-food culture, I love the idea of making the dinner last for hours. These are the conversations that will help us to evolve." Let's Talk About Death (over Dinner) offers keen practical advice on how to have these same conversations—not just at the dinner table, but anywhere. There's no one right way to talk about death, but Hebb shares time—and dinner—tested prompts to use as conversation starters, ranging from the spiritual to the practical, from analytical to downright funny and surprising. By transforming the most difficult conversations into an opportunity, they become celebratory and meaningful—ways that not only can change the way we die, but the way we live.

The only thing missing from her perfect plan? Her girlfriend (who ended things when Alice confessed she's asexual). Alice is done with dating—no thank you, do not pass go, stick a fork in her, done. But then Alice meets Takumi and she can’t stop thinking about him or the rom com-grade romance feels she did not ask for (uncertainty, butterflies, and swoons, oh my!). Book Synopsis Let's Talk about Death by : Steve Gordon
Download or read book Let's Talk about Death written by Steve Gordon and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts in end-of-life care tell us that we should talk about death and dying with relatives and friends, but how do we get such conversations off the ground in a society that historically has avoided the topic? This book provides one example of such a conversation. The coauthors take up challenging questions about pain, caregiving, grief, and what comes after death. Their unlikely collaboration is itself connected to death: the murders of two of Irene's closest friends and Steve's support in perpetuating memories of those friends' lives and not just their violent ends. The authors share the results of a no-holds-barred discussion they conducted for several years over email. Readers can consider a range of views on complicated issues to which there are no right answers. Letting ourselves pose certain questions has the potential to profoundly change the way we think about death, how we choose to die, and, just as importantly, the way we live. Honest, probing, sensitive, and even humorous at times, the completely open discussions in this book will help readers deal with a topic that most of us try to avoid but that everyone will face eventually.

Download or read book Lets Talk About: CCVAB written by Dr Wendy Thorley PhD, M.Ed, B.A (Hons) Ed. R.G.N. National Teaching Fellow Higher Education Academy and published by CEL&T Training and Development. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the updated version of Lets Talk About Child to Parent Violence to recognise that Childhood Challenging, Violent or Aggressive Behaviour (CCVAB) in the home involves more than parents. CCVAB affects everyone in the home, children as well as any other adult. Childhood Challenging Violent or Aggressive behaviour in the home is gaining wider recognition across society leading to an 'opening up' of the lives of families but in the real world little has changed for families. This book is relevant to professionals and parent/carers or those who want to gain a better understanding of Childhood Challenging, Violent or Aggressive Behaviour (CCVAB). CCVAB can be diagnosed as a cognitive disorder identified by the World Health Organisation as a 'Conduct Disorder within the context of the family' yet this diagnosis has not been used for children so far. CCVAB is most usually thought of as Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse (APVA) but this overlooks the age when most CCVAB starts - at the age of 6-9 years. For families this means they are left unsupported until children reach adolescence when the behaviour has escalated and become entrenched, something that could have been prevented had earlier recognition been made. Childhood Challenging, Violent or Aggressive Behaviour (CCVAB) is an umbrella term for a range of acronyms previously used to identify children's challenging, violent or aggressive behaviour in the home. Previous acronyms such as CPVA or APVA focus on violence and abuse towards the parent themselves yet evidence repeatedly shows this is not always the case and sibling abuse or property destruction can also happen. We look to open up understanding and highlight how listening to families is the first step of developing support for these families and remove preconceived views about who these families and children are. We consider CCVAB against new information about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), children with Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND), Neurological development and Learning Difficulties to bring attention to the many ways that Childhood Challenging, Violent or Aggressive Behaviour can happen. This book looks at what is known and what is emerging to help provide better understanding. the impact on families living with CCVAB is immense, by including parents views these families explain what living with CCVAB is for them in the real world and how little support is available to them and their family

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For his 2007 critically acclaimed 33 1/3 series title, Let's Talk About Love, Carl Wilson went on a quest to find his inner Céline Dion fan and explore how we define ourselves by what we call good and bad, what we love and what we hate. At once among the most widely beloved and most reviled and lampooned pop stars of the past few decades, Céline Dion's critics call her mawkish and overblown while millions of fans around the world adore her “huge pipes” and even bigger feelings. How can anyone say which side is right? This new, expanded edition goes even further, calling on thirteen prominent writers and musicians to respond to themes ranging from sentiment and kitsch to cultural capital and musical snobbery. The original text is followed by lively arguments and stories from Nick Hornby, Krist Novoselic, Ann Powers, Mary Gaitskill, James Franco, Sheila Heti and others. In a new afterword, Carl Wilson examines recent cultural changes in love and hate, including the impact of technology and social media on how taste works (or doesn't) in the 21st century.
