Book Synopsis When Men Don?t Cry and Other Plays for Teens by : Samuel Williams
Download or read book When Men Don?t Cry and Other Plays for Teens written by Samuel Williams and published by Partridge Singapore. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the worst of us have a story to tell and a rationalization to share. The problem is that the "best of us" have already judged them unworthy. Many plays for student actors shy away from serious subjects. Even so, today's world is a serious place, and young people are facing some of the biggest challenges of their lives-gangs, drugs, bullying, broken homes, violence in the street. Seeking to address these topics, playwright Samuel Williams presents When Men Don't Cry and Other Plays for Teens, the last in his four-book series of plays. Powerful and relevant, these short dramatic works offer insight, understanding, and social commentary for today's youths, their teachers, and their families. Educational as well as entertaining, these plays shine a light on a troubled and often misunderstood generation. Acted out on stage or read aloud in a group setting, Williams' easy-to-read tales look past teens' tattoos, piercings, gang colors, and sagging pants to find their humanity. Ideal for schools and church groups, parents, and teens, When Men Don't Cry and Other Plays for Teens explores a litany of experiences and seeks to positively change the fundamental way that people see today's youth and family dynamics.

Download or read book ReFocus written by Jim Daly and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Jim Daly, the compassionate leader of Focus on the Family, ReFocus inspires and motivates Christians to transcend political agendas and partisan battles and instead interact with others in a way that will consistently reveal the heart of God to a desperately hurting world. Our culture has become painfully polarized, often hindering relationships with neighbors, colleagues, and the very people who need to discover the love of Jesus Christ. Remembering that we are foremost citizens of heaven serving a loving Father, we who call ourselves followers of Christ can once again be known by our love. But how? In what context and through what means? How can we tear down the walls that divide our culture, our neighborhoods and workplaces and families, in this increasingly contentious world? Drawing on a rich variety of true stories and sources both historical and contemporary--from behind the scenes in today's halls of power, to moving accounts from church history, to powerful breakthrough's in Daly's own life and ministry--Daly challenges us to reclaim our responsibility, and our privilege, as God's sons and daughters. As followers of Jesus with His humility and compassion as our model, ReFocus: Living a Life that Reflects God's Heart demonstrates how Christians can show the world an inexplicable taste of grace with no agenda other than to reveal the heart of God as the loving Abba Father He is.

Book Synopsis A Totally Honest Guide for Thriving in College by : Nicole Kochanowski

This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a scientific research paper on how to statistically do well in college. It is not a warm and fuzzy book of mantras for seizing the right study habits. It is my down-to-earth, straight from the source, totally REAL explanation of what happens behind closed dorm room doors. I wrote this book across the course of my own college career, frustrated with my lack of preparedness going into so many different college situations. I tried to cover the whole spectrum, from the fun things everyone wants to talk about (like partying) to the not as fun stuff that everyone later wishes they HAD talked about (like how to sign up for classes). I do this over the entire college timeline, starting with how to write an appealing application, and ending with how to transition into the real world post graduation, plus all the juicy details in between. Whether you're a high school junior, already in college, or a doting relative who knows someone attending a university, this handy guide will provide you or your loved one with the reassurance and instruction they need to kick some major upper level education booty (while doing so safely and professionally of course). So let's get ready to survive, no, thrive, in the next major segment of your life, shall we? Every fall, millions of young adults crash into college fired up for the best four years of their lives, ready to experience campus life, take classes about things they’re interested in, and meet people from all over the world. Most students, however, are better prepared to pick their major or talk to strangers than they are to take care of themselves in the college setting. College students today are more depressed, anxious, and stressed than previous waves of students; they’re also more sedentary, not really exercising, and living in a meal-plan limbo supplemented with ramen and coffee. In this comprehensive field guild, high school coaches Jill and Dave Henry break down the facts and deliver doable, no-BS strategies for managing physical and mental health on campus. In addition to helpful, interactive graphics, the coaches share their relatable true stories—ranging from the ridiculous to the serious—to discuss the five biggest health obstacles students face in college. On top of research-backed tips, The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed also features raw and personal advice from current students on college campuses across the country. While simply figuring out what to eat and how to exercise can be completely overwhelming, this guide goes beyond a basic crash course on how to be healthy. Jill and Dave cover everything from crucial time-management skills to the complex sensitivity of self-doubt, sexual assault, and depression with humor, humility, and heart. The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed is a complete road map for how to take care of your mind and body that will not only set students up to crush the next four years, but will also provide a foundation they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Book Synopsis Academically Adrift by : Richard Arum
Download or read book Academically Adrift written by Richard Arum and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of soaring tuition costs, more and more students go to college every year. A bachelor’s degree is now required for entry into a growing number of professions. And some parents begin planning for the expense of sending their kids to college when they’re born. Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa’s answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills—including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing—during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise—instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. Academically Adrift holds sobering lessons for students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and parents—all of whom are implicated in promoting or at least ignoring contemporary campus culture. Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa’s report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.
