Book excerpt: What is pre middle age? Cole always answers, "Well, when are you gonna die?" Sure, we define it now as 30-50 but it's really about the first pangs of growing into a full-fledged adult. Turns out it stings at times. "You're growing up. And although you want to be somebody's baby...you pay bills and make decisions and buy things like toilet paper and Italian Vogue." With charming transparency and wit, Cole challenges you to mature now instead of in your 80s. Her essays are quick, her life lessons brutally honest and her hunger for living with more grace and civility intoxicating. Whether pre, post or middle age, if one lesson doesn't resonate with you, the next certainly will.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: gut (2+), University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf), course: Hauptseminar: Teaching English Literature from Medieval Times to the Early Renaissance, 9 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The following piece of work entirely dedicates itself to the era of the Late Middle Ages. My model lesson does not concentrate on a particular aspect of this era, but gives an overview of a lot of topics. It can therefore be regarded as a multifunctional preparatory lesson: the first step into the overall thematic is portrayed and lots of occasions are given to find different fields to reflect upon. I prefer this open – but fixed – thematic because my target is not to provide the pupils with an overdose of facts. I want to offer them a general idea, an outline of the Middle Ages and would rather like them to understand the mentality of this time than to learn too many facts and dates by heart. According to the authors of the SMART-study, my approach is right: “the need to provide an overview, a framework, a sense of unity and coherence [is characterized as] centrally important”. Apart from that, I pursue the aim of enabling the children to read medieval literature. The knowledge of the medieval way of thinking is an important condition in order to study written works dating from this era. It is interesting that we are looking back to ancient times because of two reasons: on the one hand, we want to get an impression of the living conditions which formed the background of medieval literature. On the other hand, “medieval history and literature [...] [are] simply essential to a proper understanding of our own [stress: Ga.Sch.] society, which is not only heir to, but to a large degree the creation of, the Middle Ages”. Consequently, this epoch actually does not need any justification, its significance even in today’s life makes it obvious enough why we should deal with this topic at school. We live in a society which is coined by the Middle Ages, and this has to be mirrored in school life as well – “we cannot study literature or political history [...] in isolation; all of our studies are ultimately studies of the entire culture of the Middle Ages”3. That implies that the Middle Ages, their diversity and mysteriousness, their inventions and effects on our present time, are just part of our general knowledge, and one cannot avoid to be confronted with them. In my essay I will design a fictitious English lesson in a ninth class of a Grammar School. [...]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Divine Office--the cycle of daily worship other than the Mass--is the richest source of liturgical texts and music from the Latin Middle Ages. However, its richness, the great diversity of its manuscripts, and its many variations from community to community have made it difficult to study, and it remains largely unexplored terrain. This volume is a practical guide to the Divine Office for students and scholars throughout the field of medieval studies. The book surveys the many questions related to the Office and presents the leading analytical tools and research methods now used in the field. Beginning with the Office in the early Middle Ages, the book covers manuscript sources and their contents; regional developments and variations; the relationship between the Office, the Mass, and other ceremonies and repertories; and the deep links between the Office and medieval hagiography. The book concludes with a discussion of recent technical advances for handling the enormous amounts of evidence on the Office and its performance, in particular CANTUS, the vast electronic database developed by Ruth Steiner of Catholic University for the analysis of chant repertories. The Divine Office in the Latin Middle Ages is an essential resource for anyone studying medieval liturgy. Its accessible style and broad coverage make it an important basic reference for a wide range of students and scholars in art history, religious studies, social history, literature, musicology, and theology.

Book excerpt: Never Too Old to Teach is a heart-warming story of a middle-aged man's first year of teaching high school after spending twenty years in a corporate cubicle. Written in a humorous, straightforward style with minimal technical jargon, this book provides richly detailed accounts of events, lessons, and conversations that actually took place in the author's special education English classroom. Goldman's accounts are accompanied by narratives and reflections that give the reader insight into the true nature of teaching high school English to a diverse student body with learning disabilities, covering issues such as maintaining classroom control, effective curriculum development, collaboration with families for positive student outcomes, successfully working with administration, the benefits of teaching in middle age, and establishing student rapport.

Book excerpt: Mobility and travel have always been key characteristics of human societies, having various cultural, social and religious aims and purposes. Travels shaped religions and societies and were a way for people to understand themselves, this world and the transcendent. This book analyses travelling in its social context in ancient and medieval societies. Why did people travel, how did they travel and what kind of communal networks and negotiations were inherent in their travels? Travel was not only the privilege of the wealthy or the male, but people from all social groups, genders and physical abilities travelled. Their reasons to travel varied from profane to sacred, but often these two were intermingled in the reasons for travelling. The chapters cover a long chronology from Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages, offering the reader insights into the developments and continuities of travel and pilgrimage as a phenomenon of vital importance.
